3 Idiots is a damn good movie, absolutely hilarious and emotional at the same time
Just re-watched the movie, it has really aged like a fine wine. It is so good, it is definitely in my top 10 movies of all time. I feel it is not easy to get a movie that is legit funny and full of emotions at the same time but this movie does it easily.
The cast is amazing and the chemistry is genuine. I look Rancho and Pia. Really cute couple plus Virus is an amazing antagonist.
Doing my first watch, I did not realize how the movie spoke about mental issues and suicide. It really gives an amazing message to strive to live.
I really enjoyed rewatching the movie. Read they are planning a sequel, so excited!
Speaking as a 2nd gen Indian, the funny part about 3 Idiots is that my parents and uncles would all say it's a great movie with a great message and then turn around and still push their kids into engineering and medicine.
didnt know there was 1st gen and 2nd gen indians :skull: like bro what??
u also got the 3rd gen iPod?
Yes 3 Idiots was great. I was stunned to see how seriously it skewered problems in education and class in India, it seems like a goofy comedy but the sociopolitical element was hardcore.
Every Aamir Khan film I've seen is massively sociopolitical.
Go through his IMDb and watch them all. They're all incredible.
Dhoom 3?
most 1st year engineers are suicidal. surveys indicate around 90-95% of all 1st year engineers are suicidal. It's scary, yet true.
Can vouch for that
1st year engineer here, can confirm
What bullshit lmao. State your sources
Having been a 1st year engineer not too long ago, I would find it believable if it said surveys indicate around 90-95% of all 1st year engineers have had thoughts of suicide. I dont believe for a second that 90% (hell even 19%) are suicidal.
Though, my uni is in Canada and I cant speak for Indians if that figure refers to them specifically.
Can you read Hindi?
There's a Mexican remake called 3 Idiots, haven't seen it. Also loved the original. Interestingly on IMDb many Indian films get well over 8 and plenty of voters but miss out on the Top 250 due to the "regular voters" rule but 3 Idiots us there, think it was #69 when I last looked.
There was a whole change in the weighting system for the top 250 specifically because Indian movies were being voted in mass out of nowhere.
Well, there are a lot of Indians...
Yeah decent film, don't let the scene near the start where the guy gets electrocuted while pissing(?) put you off.
Idk why Reddit just writes off Indian Cinema. They have music and dancing, sure. Helps convey a lot more emotion than any sex scene.
And yeah, 3 Idiots is definitely top 10 all time. Add My Name is Khan too.
Indian Cinema/movies arent played too often at local normal american cinema theatres. Indian Cinema has bollywood and there are specific theatres that focus on indian movies, so usually only indians would frequent them. There's little cross pollination. In contrast, look at parasite, it was played at literally ever american theatre. If they had done more of that with 3 idiots, it would be more recognized and popular.
I don't think Parasite is the right example in this instance. There is less of a cultural leap when one jumps from a Hollywood movie to Parasite than if one were to watch an Indian film. The latter is more of an acquired taste for a non native audience.
I wouldn't say less leaps, I'd just say that there are different leaps.
yu dumb
Not sure if you know, but India has more than just Bollywood. So many good movies are made in languages like Tamil and Malayalam that don't include the typical Bollywood stuff and are instead, realistic. Problem is the lack of exposure. People see a few shitty Bollywood movies and start thinking that's what India is about.
You’re right but parasite wasn’t in all these theatres at initial release right? It got a lot of attention and then was played across the country. I live in Surrey, BC and due to our large south Asian population, we get almost all Bollywood movies in theatres. On that note, however, it was sad that the 3 idiots craze didn’t reach American audiences to warrant a subtitled version in theatres.
We're spoiled in New York because we have mainstream theatres that run Asian films.
Rewatched my name is khan. That movie was corny af
It's ruined by its second half, which is unfortunately the case for a lot of Indian films.
Brevity was never their strength
Idk.. I thought it goes from innocent to dark in an effective way. And it’s as relevant as ever, unfortunately. They showed it in my high school media arts class.
Reddit is ignorant and has narrow horizons. Everyone’s lists are ultra white centric. For example most “best action movies” comments don’t have any Hong Kong movies which is absurd. And for example there’s never discussion of any movies that are about a black woman.
For every good movie in Bollywood there are 100 which are thrash that is why people never bother to see it
But this one more movie has really impressive and enjoying was andhadhun, it was rollercoaster.
You could easily say the same for Hollywood, or most major entertainment industries
Ignoring smaller films and looking at blockbusters... Hollywood blockbusters are brilliant, Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino, Spielberg...films like Mad Max, Arrival, Harry Potter, etc. Yeah we get fast and furious and transformers but the former group of these films absolutely trump bollywood blockbuster cringe-fest bs. Its not even a comparison.
What a stupid comment. Most people on Reddit are from the US. Second most would be UK, Aus. Then Western Europe. Ofc stuff on here will be white centric. That isn't ignorance, just simple math.
Parasite and The Farewell is one of this subs most loved movies of the year. Moonlight was another movie praised by Reddit. Reddit also loves films by Akira Kurosawa and Satyajit Rai. Don't really see your point about everyone's list being "ultra white centric"
How is the The Favourite not white? Also those are exceptions.
Sorry, meant to say the Farewell by Lulu Wang. Not the yorgos movie
I agree that the movie recommendations actually have a lot interesting ones in between the constant stream of circlejerking popular films that are well known.
I would say that the discussions of actors here is pretty white centric though. It's not really that egregious or imo purposeful.
It also doesn’t help that the most “successful” Indian films are Rohit Shetty, Salman Khan, and now Karan Johar trash. They just become memes.

Boy and girl express their love for each other. What comes next?
It’s not a bad comparison in this situation because both attempt to confirm their relationship. They do a song in Switzerland or have sex.
Comment deleted by user
Sure. I just gave one example.
And why do you think one is better than the other?
Both brilliant movies, you'll like "Like stars on earth"
Hi Khan (ik ur refering to the movie lol)

I mean, it’s a 2009 movie, and the humor of back then was the grandma humor of today...
No reason to get this angry.
Because real life doesn't have dance numbers? I guess it's a cultural thing. A dance number in a movie that isn't specifically a musical would immediately and irrevocably take me out of the mood and atmosphere.
It’s also cheesy and preachy as fuck where a lot of the characters act more like caricatures.
That's every Rajkumar Hirani movie, I don't understand why people like his stuff so much. PK is his best movie, imo.
This exactly, its a mediocre film at best. Just cause it addresses some serious issues like mental health, suicide and some toxicity in the pressures of being a student doesn't automatically make it a good film let alone a solid one.
It's really not just that, it's how every scene is iconic, the cast has extremely good chemistry, and the issues addressed are executed perfectly. Many movies try social commentary on issues like these, but 3 idiots managed to do it so flawlessly that decades later it still holds its ground and many people still watch it now.
No matter how a good movie is people on reddit will always be critical of it.
Anyone, please let me know if there are other movies of similar quality, as I haven't found any bollywood movie that even comes close to 3 Idiots. I always have to turn them off after 30 minutes after seeing 20 minutes of dancing...

These are just on top of my head. I am sure there are many. Feel free to add.
Do watch Gunda
But 3 Idiots also has dance scenes in it?
Yes, but they aren't extremely excessive.
Watch October. It's beautiful.
I really liked that film, I was disappointed to hear reviewers say ridiculous things about it.
Barfi for similar big production value + complex story.
The Lunchbox for a serious drama, though there are many more. Maybe look up Bollywood movies without songs.
Sports drama Dangal was big too.
I enjoyed Queen which was more lighthearted.
It's beautiful and emotional and a really good movie to watch, but the comedy was dumb.
Amazing movie. I cried at the father scene. Watched it several times.
I skipped the dancing/singing part though. I
Watch "Kumbalangi Nights"
Fantastic movie which moves at breakneck speed. Being an Engineering college graduate, can totally relate to message ( which doesnt get much preachy btw)
However the 'Balatkaar' ( rape) speech https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLOQjk6oZ9g hasn't aged well in this #metoo era.
I watched this film during grade 7 I never laughed so hard in this film. What special about this film is that it's about the education system of Asian countries specially Philippines. I'm grade 9 and I still love it
Interesting, I need to watch it. I can admit to ignoring a lot of Indian cinema and putting it in a box with bollywood blockbusters. I'd never assume they don't have some incredible films though.
Lion was fucking incredible and so overlooked that it hurts me. I read the book and it moved me even more, gah.
FYI . It is not an Indian film . It is just a film about an Indian guy with a few Indian actors.
3 Idiots is a Bollywood blockbuster. It was the highest grossing Indian movie from 2009 to 2013.
But there's something I don't understand in your comment. How on earth you never assumed one of the biggest movie industries would have some incredible movies?
Comment deleted by user
I don't mean audience size. I mean the number of produced movies. The other guy explained it.
Comment deleted by user
Sure, but that still makes no sense. India produces more than 1000 movies annually. Just going by simple numbers there have to be some good ones.
Comment deleted by user
I feel like you misread his comment lol
He said he would never assume they don't have SOME incredible movies. As in, obviously they have to have incredible movies, I just don't know about the industry well enough.
One of my favourite movies.
I think near the end the main guy becomes a bit too perfect tho (those 20 minutes where he's solving basically everything. Birth with a plunger etc) was a bit too hammy.
But the rest, and thr songs and the feel goodness of it. Love it.
That's based on a real guy, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonam_Wangchuk_(engineer)
I'm Indian, and enjoy a lot of Indian movies, but most are definitely unwatchable for the average person. They're incredibly corny to the point I often audibly cringe, theyre long af, and are often not subtle at all with their messages . I enjoy them cuz I grew up watching them, and I get the culture around them, but If u haven't then youre likely not going to enjoy them
Cried a lot in this movie. Watched it like a dozen times. One of the best movies l have ever seen.
Rajkumar Hirani is a fantastic director, all of his movies are absolute gems.
If you liked this movie, watch PK. It has aamir Khan too. It’s a bit on the whacky side and the end is very Bollywood like, but it really sheds a light on how religion is over here.
I wasn't a fan of PK. The alien character was more annoying than endearing and I didn't like the moralising tone of the movie.
On the other hand I thought the movie "Oh my god" which had a similar theme was much better executed.
OMG is very similar to PK but it doesn't have the same star power so it's not talked about as much. It's much better than PK
What did you think of the ending climax of OMG? I felt that it was a little too convenient.
Just watched the trailer. I want that two minutes of my life back.
Trailer is weird but the movie is excellent.
The trailer really doesnt do it justice. I asked my Canadian friends to not watch the trailer as it might seem weird compared to american trailers and they went in blind and texted me afterwards telling me how much they couldnt believe i didnt recommend the movie sooner. It's one of the lesser "Indian" movies based on the fact that it isn't that cheesy, and gets better and better as it goes on.
Check out the only desi video about it
Just realised today I've been to the place where they ask for the address of chanchad bhawan😅
Great movie!!
