      Irreplaceable You Reviews

You will not enjoy much of the hour and a half that precedes the climactic scene... but if you are looking for an excuse to bawl your fucking eyes out, Irreplaceble You will definitely do the trick. But you won't feel good about it.

With strong performances, the film is elevated enough to get its message across - that we may think we have enough time, but in our final moments time may be the last thing on our minds.

Irreplaceable You is built to be a tearjerker, but it's working from a blueprint that's out of date. Its quirkiness is too forced and its humor too trite for there to be anything to hold onto.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Michiel Huisman tug fiercely at our heartstrings with their charming portrayals of two people who fell in love as they grew up together and now face the terminal illness of Mbatha-Raw's character.

Something is there with one woman's mission to secure her replacement, but Wohl doesn't go far enough with the premise, and Laing makes the whole thing look very familiar.

Irreplaceable You is a mixed bag and Netflix is the perfect home for it. It's the kind of movie that won't offend or waste your time. There are better options out there, but you'll find things in Irreplaceable You to be moved by.

Irreplaceable You seamlessly volleys back and forth between shameless emotional porn and super sentimental storytelling in a way that makes you first forgive it and then savor it.

Tearjerker deals with love, death, and grief; some swearing.

Irreplaceable You doesn't have a whole lot more to say than that dying when you'd rather be doing other things-getting married or walking along the Brooklyn waterfront or just, well, living-isn't ideal.

What's the best reaction to news that a young adult is the victim of terminal cancer? There are practically endless responses, and it seems most of them are explored -- with great earnestness but little success -- in Irreplaceable You.

It sounds unbearably beatific; it's not. Irreplaceable You is not afraid to depict its central characters as unreasonable jerks....The lactose-intolerant have nothing to fear: no cheese was used in the making of this movie.

It would serve its audience better if it paid more attention to a stronger structure and a believable plot, but its flaws don't keep it from being affecting for those who like their love stories on the lachrymose side.

The film itself seems to be in denial about its own story.

      Full Review | Original Score: 2/4 | Feb 16, 2018

The movie, directed by Stephanie Laing, tries too hard and too implausibly to fulfill what proves an uncomfortable, unworkable concept.

Wohl never manages to achieve the proper tonal blend. The result is neither sufficiently funny nor moving, lacking the truly daring humor that might have made the film a bracing dark comedy.

A half-baked tragic love story so desperately engineered to tear-jerk that it ceases to resemble anything human.

      Full Review | Feb 15, 2018

By the end, Irreplaceable You could be replaced by pretty much any other terminal romance and it would be hard to notice the difference.

"Irreplaceable You" uses an assortment of slight incidents to impart a lesson that, from the outset, is patently obvious to everyone except the too-dim-to-be-believed person for whom it's intended.
