What's so great about about interstellar overdrive? Everybody seems to love it but me.
To me interstellar overdrive is just 8 minutes of barely tollerable noise (beginning and end are quite alright) on a very good album. But you guys all seem to absollutely love it, so i dug around here and listened to the mono version as well as the 16 minute version. And although mono>stereo i still don't like it, just like the 16 minute one (although that one had its moments).
So since the daily discussion on this one wassn't much help i'm asking: what's so great about interstellar overdrive?
pfff... I bet youre one of those people who dont like Several Species either, huh
Easily their best song.
That song features their best lyrics.
KAKAKA OOM UAA WEEE
KAKAKA OOM UAA WEEE
KAKAKA OOM UAA WEEE
That's exactly what a grooving pict would say.
I don't get it either. I've listened to it numerous times, both mono and stereo, and it's just so boring. I love the guitar riff and the bassline, but other than that, it's nothing but random noises for ten minutes.
My favorite part of it is how it transitions into The Gnome.
The innovation. The psychedelic-ness. Listen to it high. You see.
To be honest, I don't really love the middle part as much. I'll listen to it, but after the first two or so minutes, until the last little bit, I don't enjoy it as much. It's so odd, innovative, and experimental, it somehow works enough for me to like it just a little bit.
Plus the out-of-tune guitar and odd shit is what they wanted to do and I respect that. And it's like predicting Syd's behavior in just a few months.
I recognice that it is innovative, but a song can be innovative and bad at the same time. And a song that is only good when high also counts as a bad song in my oppinion (although i will probably listen to it that way sometime in the future).
I do howevar like what you're saying about how it resembles Syd's behavior, that does make me appriciate it more
The high thing is mostly a joke, but people say that about all of Pink Floyds work, that it's better high. I wouldn't be surprised. LSD does apparently make music sound better, I'm not sure about weed, and Pink Floyd's music + lyrics are pretty... you know.
I'm glad, though, that I could help you appreciate it more.
I share your view. I really can't even stand to listen to it.
To be honest, I have the same view on the majority of the Syd era Floyd.
So, I share your view on Interstellar Overdrive.
I accutally do really like a lot of the syd songs and Piper is my 4/5th favorite pink floyd album but i just don't like interstellar overdrive
The thing is, this song heavily relies on free form Jazz style improv (especially the live versions), which is why it doesn't sound as linear as other songs. Not to mention it is psychedelic rock,so the trippyness adds to the weirdness of the song. At first I didn't like it at all (as I didnt like the Syd era at first either) but afterwards I grew a love for psychedelic rock and improv pieces, which eventually made me love this song and the Syd era. Its one of their songs that are tougher to get into, so maybe eventually you'll enjoy it
I love jazz so maybe that's why I love Interstellar Overdrive as well.
Its kinda like a scary movie some people like them some people dont , reminds me of a circus ❤️
well, you can't just you if u wanna make som1 get into pink floyd get them to listen them to this and express the magnitude of the gratuity of their music. ig this just one of those songs which are good in a weird, otherworldly wayy
What you hear is kind of what you can experience on the psychedelic drug LSD
The sound is exactly the mood of a strange, intense and scary LSD trip. For me who has suffered from a bad trip with 30 days in a mental hospital and 9 years of schizophrenia and paranoia it is hard to stand.
I am more than lucky and grateful, that I suffer only a small aftermath by now. But I am still recovering.
A lot of people say music is your soul and you are putting your mind and energy to it. So you already can see or hear the early state of Syd's madness.
