Isaac Hayes was never a good singer. A good arranger, he was, though, and he was a pioneer of Soul-Jazz. He actually belonged to the best in the early seventies, and he even taught Barry White a thing or two.

This CD is, thus, something like a Best-Of collection, with tunes taken mostly from the movie soundtracks he recorded back then.

Excellent, from beginning to end.

I wish Stax released this one on vinyl...

Instrumentals is 99% accurate here (there are some female vocals repeating the phrase 'Let's Stay Together' but no other lyrics present- it's a predominately instrumental song). This would be a nice compilation to listen to during an afternoon of chores, or doing some kind of activity or hobby. The music is engaging enough to be enjoyable without being intrusive or distracting. I like that this comp shows off Sir Isaac's considerable skills as a composer. With all the smooth vocals present in his recordings, it's easy to forget that he was an exceptional songwriter.
Many of these tunes are from Hayes' soundtracks. Hung Up on My Baby from Tough Guys; Blue's Crib, Driving in the Sun, Dorinda's Party & Pursuit of the Pimpmobile from Truck Turner; No Name Bar, Cafe Regio's, Ellie's Love Theme from Shaft. I'm not sure about the others but these are all quality tunes taken from Hayes' catalog. This comp would definitely be superfluous to someone who already has a bunch of Hayes' albums, but it's a good collection for those who want nice laid back grooves.

When not constructing Wagnerian lengthed epics and being Chef Mr.Hayes took time out to do his instrumental thang. Some good stuff too.
