#ONTHISDAY in 1536, court musician Mark Smeaton, is taken to the home of Thomas Cromwell and tortured for 24 hours before admitting to a sexual affair with the queen Anne Boleyn.
Out of the 5 men accused of sleeping with the queen, Mark was the only one to admit to being guilty of the crime.
But why? Because torture.
Okay, but why was he the only one tortured? Tradition dictated that men born into the nobility would not be tortured. #PoorbabyMark was the only one of commoner birth.
Mark Smeaton only had 17 days longer to live.
Anne Boleyn had 19.

#Onthisday in history, a likely very stressed out Anne Boleyn could not control her big sexy mouth, and it may have lead to the head of a friend of hers.
Her head was likely already in trouble anyway. At this point, Anne Boleyn didn`t know that she only had 20 days left to live.
👟Sir Henry Norris was a close friend of Anne`s and a supporter of hers. He had been dating ("courting") her cousin and lady in waiting. When Anne asked why Norris was taking so long to propose to said lady, he skirted the question.
👟Likely because it was a fucking awkward question to ask in public.
👟 Annoyed with Norris` non-answer, Anne said to him "You look for dead men’s shoes, for if aught came to the King but good, you would look to have me". AKA= you`re just waiting out until the king dies so you can marry me instead.
👟 Now courtly flirtations were a huge part of life, but the mention of the king`s death was a big mistake. HUGE. Norris ran off, horrified to be implicated in such a conversation. Anne would later recall him to swear in front of witnesses that Anne was a good woman and meant nothing by it.

I think she was fishing for a compliment, tbh. Someone to remind her that she was a desirable queen and she just went too far with the courtly jokes. Losing grip on reality maybe a little bit.
