Jeffrey R Authentic locations and effective costuming were neutralized by wooden acting and lazy directing... Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/01/23 Full Review Audience Member A must see for any fan of sword and sandal epics. This film has a much shorter runtime and a much lower budget than the roman history films of old. If you're looking for grand scale, you will not find it here, if you're looking for vast locations, this is not your film either. However, 'In the name of Ben Hurr' packs alot of drama and adventure into 3 locations with all the hallmarks of a '60s Hollywood classic. The plot is simple yet compelling and resembles the archetypical struggles of a people occupied by great empire, with the will to resist tyranny. The cast also includes refreshing roles for female characters that this reviewer has never before seen in a period epic. Despite the small budget, this picture has a big heart and manages to represent a diverse range of characters (even if they are completely devoid of personality outside of their plot roles). The lighting IS competent. The handheld camera work IS demonstrable of effort. The director listened in film school and as a result, it is actually very watchable. Highly Recommend.
