About The Awful
I was bored on the 9th of Octover 1940 when, I believe, the Nasties were still booming us led by Madolf Heatlump (who only had one). Anyway they didn't get me. I attended to varicous schools in Liddypol. And still didn't pass -- much to my Aunties supplies. As a member of the most publified Beatles my (P, G, and R's) records might seem funnier to some of you than this book, but as far as I'm conceived this correction of short writty is the most wonderfoul larf I've every ready.
God help and breed you all.

If I May, perhaps June, this book is both whimsical and absurd. But the speciousness of each story is what makes it a bona fide collectible. The poems are lucid with a sense of unlearned coming from the author. But that's not true of Mr. Lennon. I find he is somewhere between astute and nescient. I surpose it's oll abut yur frame of reference. To me, he hippeabled more hobblies than I could in a lifetime. Mr. Lennon saved my life without even knowing me. I suppose that's why he's a poet, because he doesn't know it. If you enjoy authentic poems of spurious meaning then I would recommend this book. Not even everything always makes sense. But your skaddle will ship - shape to Pete for all those sakes if you allow me to say what I shall say. 42 knee socks won't keep your feet dry in a flood but this book will require time to read it. Don't forget to put on your Sunday's best on for Tuesday's celebration of 2 days ago. I bet a nickel this will tickle the fickle of the Wickel's. They're a fun family but they don't have a covenant to prove the worth of it. Have a dashing day...unless you don't want to. Be sure to celebrate the celebration while your at the celebration. Don't fall to hard, you might try to reach for a hand and drag them down with you. For the blue, what you do is what gets you your due.

I read all these reviews on how this book is illegible and hard to understand and full of nonsense. That is exactly what it is meant to be. If you read Paul McCartney's intro and even the back "About the Awful" you will understand that. It is meant to make the reader laugh and see life lightly. I quote McCartney's intro, "None of it has to make sense and if it seems funny then that's enough".

Lennon was an interesting character. In press meetings and in the Beatle films one will see how he likes to joke about making people laugh. We also know the deeper side of Lennon...the one the shows in his songs "Help!", "Isolation", "Mother", and others. The man has been through a lot and copes with it through humor.

During the time he wrote "In His Own Write" in 1964 he was thrust into the heat of Beatlemania and world fame. Along with that came a huge weight on his shoulders. His books and his music were ways to release some of that weight and provide a little enjoyment for the people around him.

This book is made to be funny and hard to get. It is Lennon's own mind game. Meant to make you think, come to your own conclusions and to have some fun. If you take it any other way then you miss the point of what he was doing. It is a great book of laughs and interesting drawings from John Lennon. Buy it, borrow it, give it a looksi do.

Reading this short, vintage collection of John Lennon's offbeat writings is like taking a trip back to a simpler time. It feels like Beatlemania all over again, but viewed in retrospect and with knowing what we now know about John, you can really get a feel for him as a person, warts and all. Irreverent, politically incorrect, outspoken, quirky and very funny are good words to describe his writing style and what he writes about. The cartoons look a lot like James Thurber's.
He wasn't a genius but he was a very, very talented man.
Well worth reading, even essential, for Beatles fans, Lennon fans and those who feel (like myself) a desire to return to a simpler time. Put on some Beatles music and enjoy the read!!

My sister had a first edition of this book back in the sixties, but it got lost. We still quote from it after all of these years. So, I decided to get another copy as we didn't memorize the whole thing. It captures John Lennon's unique wit, and let's you into his gentle but zany mind.

This and Lennon's "A Spaniard in the Works" make my 'Desert Island' list of essential books. John may have laughingly described his work as gobbledygook, but his clever wordplay and clear understanding of literary constructs are astounding. His deft use of malaprop rivals that of anyone-- even the Bard himself! It's true that some of the work may not have aged well, but much of it will be a perpetual source of amusement to those who appreciate a twisted turn of phrase.

John was BRILLIANT! He also had a great and sardonic sense of humor. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it t'were the 60's. John was having the best time of his life. He was prolific and proud and not afraid to take risks. The book in places is hilarious. In places, believe it or not it drags but, all together it is John in his own write. I personally, being born on October 9th, loved it!

There is much more history to this modest volume than can be imagined. I heartily recommend a visit to Google to peruse the Wikipedia commentary and the rest of the reviews as well. Overall, the work is bitter-sweet, and carries the message that was later heard in "A Hard Day's Night": Q: Are you a rocker? A: No, I'm a mocker.

Recommandé à tous les fans de John Lennon ! Mais il est vrai qu'il faut comprendre l'anglais, d'autant plus que les jeux de mots de John sont nombreux....

This book is OK. I've read better Lennon books but overall, not a bad read. Nice pictures. I would recommend this book as an introduction to the legendary Lennon. If you want to "get to know him better," there are better reads out there.
