At a Glance

Harry Bicket and The English Concert continue their annual tour of Handel’s operas and oratorios with one of his greatest operas, Rodelinda, the story of a woman of sublime beauty, intelligence, and courage. Written in 1725 as the last of a trio of masterpieces—including also Giulio Cesare and Tamerlano—it is a dream role for soprano prime donne, including in our own time Joan Sutherland and Renée Fleming. Surrounded by ambitious men fighting for the throne of Lombardy, Rodelinda shines in her fierce integrity and resolve. Across many works, Handel created impressive and multifaceted female characters, and the virtuous Rodelinda is one of the most memorable of them all.
