First heard of Irma Thomas just last Christmas when I heard her version of Oh Holy Night, I was blowing away and ran to my laptop to find out more about her, I was shocked to see that she has been putting out music since the 70's, I was more shocked that I hadn't come across this living legend before now, how glad I am that I found her and her amazing body of work. This is my first cd from her and I love it. Her vocals are bluesy, raw, soulful and sexy, love all the songs here... I'd high recommend this cd to anyone looking for some deep soul music.

Great '70s Irma, featuring the songs of Swamp Dogg!

I understand that Irma herself is not a fan of this record, and I can sorta see why: Swamp Dogg (Jerry Williams) wrote most of the songs and produced it, and his ribald and unbridled approach to soul is a few steps off from Irma's increasingly regal style, which on subsequent records has put greater emphasis on more elegant, sophisticated sentiment and has featured a bit less sass (although Irma can sass it up when need be).

Still, I find that Swamp Dogg's snappiness actually nicely offsets Irma's quasi-cabaret inclinations, and her nuance and grace as performer and interpreter bring a depth and intensity to his songs that he himself can't always muster. It's a win-win -- just check out the absolutely majestic title track and the devastating "What's So Wrong With You Loving Me?" Fine stuff, and the production, which is tight but lets the rough side drag a little, is ideal -- and for this listener, much more appealing than Irma's more lauded (and MUCH slicker) Rounder disks of the '80s, '90s, and '00s.

A lost bit of '70s soul, and a real treasure to have in it's original form (although it should be mentioned that this entire album, plus some stray singles, are available via Ace Records on a comp called "A Woman's Viewpoint"). No matter how you find it, it's a stone classic.

That said, if you are enjoying the nicely pressed vinyl edition of this record (and other Swamp Dogg-related titles on Alive), you WILL like me be disappointed that the LP editions:

- Do not include the liner notes and photos featured in the CD versions.
- Do not include the bonus tracks on the CD editions.
- Do not provide a complimentary digital download of the music (this would have been the best way to distribute the bonus tracks to vinyl consumers).
- Are packaged in flimsy paperboard sleeves (a small complaint -- they can't all be Stoughton, I guess)

It's almost as though Alive is trying to punish people who purchase the more expensive format. Classy. I emailed them and asked if it would be possible to just get an electronic copy of the liner notes, and they replied and said that would be "very complicated." Yeah. Putting a low-res PDF--or just the text--on a secret page of your website is SO HARD. Docked a star for this needless oversight.

UPDATE: Alive Records is now including a flier with the liner notes from the CD editions when you order the LPs directly from them. It doesn't address every issue, but it is a nice gesture and is much appreciated.

Irma Thomas' lost early-70s soul sides

After relocating from New Orleans to Los Angeles, soul queen Irma Thomas largely disappeared from public view for a few years. But a series of singles produced by Jerry Williams (a.k.a. Swamp Dogg) on the indie Canyon, Roker and Fungus labels led to this eight-track release in 1973. Williams had proven himself a talented musician and producer, and in the latter capacity he leaves behind the absurdist humor of his own records to bring Thomas a helping of Southern soul and West Coast funk. Thomas' new material, much of it written by Williams, has plenty of bite, but it's more personal than broad. The wistful drama of her early Minit and Imperial sides had given way to something heavier, more worldly-wise, weary and womanly. When she sings of broken relationships, it's from the experience of being spurned rather than the hope of being accepted, and when she takes stock of her life, she's not afraid to highlight problems with the balance sheet. The transition from her earlier work is particularly apparent in a remake of "Wish Someone Would Care" which evolved from heartbroken yearning to mortally wounded. Alive's 2013 reissue adds two bonus tracks, including the pre-album B-side "I'll Do it All Over You." This little-known album caught Thomas in a fiery and outspoken mood, and its return to print makes a welcome addition to her better-known releases. [©2013 Hyperbolium]

Trading Places - Vinyl re-issue

In Between Tears is a near-prefect album of 70’s soul. This has been re-issued to death, and I own at least 5 of them. The Trading Places version is my first on vinyl. This album sounds great on vinyl! A couple of the songs play at a higher level than the rest, which is an odd oversite, but I must say I enjoy hearing this on vinyl more than the previous re-issues on cd.

Alles Schlechte gleich vorweg: dieses Cover, das war schon im Erscheinungsjahr der Aufnahme 1973 ein Sinnbild für schlechten Geschmack. Und mit der Covergestaltung der CD geht's gleich weiter: 0 Infos, außer der Titelfolge, keine Songwriterangaben, keinerlei Musikernennung, kein Produzent - einfach nix. Das einzige was man aus den reichlichen Werbeinfos der "essential media group" aus dem Cover schließen kann, ist, dass das irgendwas mit Swamp Dogg zu tun haben muss, denn - aus welchen Gründen auch immer - hat sich tatsächlich diese "emg" mit Sitz in Florida, als Back-Katalog-Verwerter dazu entschlossen eine ganze Reihe von Swamp Dogg Produktionen in - angeblich - remasterter Form wiederzuveröffentlichen und dazu gehören sowohl Aufnahmen unter eigenem Namen, als auch Produktionen Dritter, als auch Aufnahmen, die er als Musiker begleitet hat. Zu letzter Kategorie gehört In Between Days. Ansonsten keine Informationen wer da die groovigsten Soulgitarren spielt, wer den rasiermesserscharfen Bläsersatz gibt, wer den voluminösen Sound produziert...

....und das ist wirklich bedauerlich - denn die Aufnahme hat's wirklich in sich. In Between Tears rutscht allmusic sogar in ihrer Irma Thomas Discography durch, nur wenn man den Titel der LP/CD eingibt, erfährt man weiteres - und das lässt sich wirklich hören: Gitarren - Duane Allman und Jesse Carr, Keyboards - Paul Hornsby.....wer jetzt gleich laut aufstöhnt "das war doch die Hour Glass Besetzung der Jahre 1967 und 68!" - stimmt, zumidest in Teilen, Greg fehlt und Jesse hieß Pete, was aber dasselbe ist, ansonsten ist das besetzungtechnisch alles Pre-Allman, nur eben fünf Jahre später. Und in der Zwischenzeit hatten alle genannten einen schier unüberschaubare Anzahl von Soulaufnahmen - einschließlich Aretha F. - begleitet. Auf In Between Tears entsteht 1973 unter Anleitung von Jerry Willams Jr., der auch die Mehrzahl der Songs geschrieben hat....Durchschnittliches - zunächst. In einer Zeit des fettesten Disco's, des knallendsten Funks ist das auf den ersten Songs gediegener aber konservativer Soul der spätsechziger, frühsiebziger Sorte in der Tradition einer Aretha, eines Otis, eines Wilson, nur dass die Songs eben nicht so bemerkenswert hitfähig ausfallen - das wirklich Ungewöhnliche steckt eher im Detail: zum einen ist Jerry Williams Jr. natürlich der Geburtsame von Swamp Dogg, und In Between Days entstammt voll und ganz der Swamp Dogg Musik Tradition, vergleichbar durchaus dessen eigenen Aufnahmen, aber auch denen der Meters, eines Johnny Sandlin und eines Allen Toussaint. Selber zwar aus Portsmouth, Virginia stammend, und als Musiker weitestgehend an die TK Studios, Floridas angebunden, stand seine Musik doch stark in der New Orleans Tradition, ähnlich einem Johnny Jenkins, dessen Ton Ton Macoute die identische Besetzung drei Jahre zuvor eingespielt hatte, ebenso wie Doris Duke's I'm A Loser (ohne Duane).

Und damit sind wir bei der zweiten Besonderheit der Aufnahme: ihr Retrocharakter, das klang nicht umsonst nach sechziger Jahren, die Musiker, und allen voran die beiden Gitarristen, spielen tatsächlich so. Das ist zumächst nichts als die krickelige Klein-Klein-Arbeit, die Duane als Studiomusiker über Jahre hinweg in den Atlantic-Studios - in hervorragender Art und Weise - üben durfte. Ebenso Carr. Das verändert sich zwar im Lauf der CD, ab Track 7 werden die Songs ausladender, lassen auch Raum für Gitarrensoli - doch das ist alles weit entfernt von allem Allman Bros.-Gehabe. Alles ist ausgessprochen zweckdienlich der Gesamtwirkung der Soul-Songs untergeordnet. Bedauerlich ist lediglich, dass es - zumindest mir - unmöglich ist, die Gitarrenstimmen den beiden Gitarristen im einzelnen zuzuordnen - egal, brilliant sind sie in jedem Fall.

Und brilliant wird die Aufnahme im Ganzen ausgerechnet ab Track 6, Coming From Behind (Monologue), ein auf raffinierte Wiederholung setzender verhaltener Talking Blues, dessen Besonderheit darin besteht, dass Dir die beiden Gitarren suggerieren, dass es auch gleich so richtig losgehen könnte. Doch das tut es erst nach einer ganzen Weile, im Übergang und direkten Anschluss zu Track 7, Wish Someone Would Care - einer Weile, die trotz des repetitiven Charakters niemals langweilig wird, sondern ganz im Gegenteil, das Wiederholungsmoment zum raffinierten Spannungsaufbau benutzt wird, bevor der Doppel-Song dann so richtig als intensiv extensiver R'n'B in Wish Someone Would Care loslegt. Und, hat das Ganze in diesen beiden Songs erstmal Fahrt aufgenommen, wird der nun bestehende Drive auch nicht mehr zurückgenommen, jetzt grooven die Songs knackig soulig und rhythm'n'bluesig. Obwohl weiterhin in ihren Tempi eher verhalten, kommen jetzt die Gitarren stärker zur Geltung - der überragende Leadgitarrist müsste eigentlich Pete Carr sein, nicht Duane. Ihr Spiel reicht nun über das verknappte, allein strukturgebende Soul-Rhythmus-Spiel hinaus - und der Bläsersatz der Swamp Dogg Band setzt, dies einrahmend, scharf konturierende coole Akzente.
Eine besondere Hervorhebung verdient dabei im Ganzen, aber insbesondere in dem Doppeltrack 6/7, der Bass von Robert Pops Popwell: damals auf einer Vielzahl von Aufnahmen vertreten, ansonsten der Stammbassist der Crusaders, spielt er hier vom Start weg einen unglaublich rollenden, prägnanten Bass, der die Aufnahme zum einen vorantreibt, zum andern aber auch fein austariert zusammenhält, ihr eine prägende Kontur verleiht.

Dass das alles so ist, bekommt vor allem der Stimme von Irma Thomas. In den eher knappen, in einer klassischen Soulmanier gespielten Openern bekommt ihre "metallische" Soulstimme eine fast zu große Form, dominiert sie die Songs. In dem Maße aber, in dem Herr Williams die Regler nach oben zieht, den einzelnen Instrumentenstimmen, speziell in der Doppelnummer 6 und 7, mehr Raum und Geltung gibt, wird das zu spannungsintensiven und dabei ausbalancierten Arrangements - unglaublich stark, selbst von einer etwas später für Furore sorgenden Millie Jackson, in deren LP-Doppler Caught Up/Still Caught Up, bei ähnlicher Machart, an Intensität wohl nicht zu toppen!

Nun ist das zwar insgesamt kein Jahrhundertwerk, rechtfertigt - von dem phänomenalen Doppeltrack abgesehen - kaum fünf Qualitätssterne, denn zu Beginn der 70er Jahre gab es, wie die bereits erwähnte Millie Jackson, aber eben auch Ann Peebles, differenziertere und vor allem erfolgreichere, weil modernere weibliche Soulaufnahmen. Swamp Dogg, alias, Jerry Williams Jr., war und ist ein eher konservativer Archtikt des Souls - damals, wie auch noch heute. Was die Aufnahme interessant macht, ist ihre beschriebene außergewöhnliche Innenstruktur - um's mal so zu nennen - die gestaltet er mit diesen Musikern ausgesprochen kunstvoll bis großartig. Das sollte für Archivare des Souls für eine beliebig große Anzahl von Sternen gut sein, eine beliebig hohen Sympathiewert besitzt sie sowieso.

PS. Es existiert eine weitere - wenn auch nur bedingt erwähnenswerte - Einschränkung: Im Übergang des Doppeltracks Coming From Behind/Wish Someone Would Care ist es den Technikern des Remastering offensichtlich entgangen, dass es sich tatsächlich um einen einzigen, 12 Minuten in einem Stück durchlaufenden Song handelt: stattdessen hat man nun im Übergang einen hörbaren akustischen 0-Break. Ich vermute, früher musste hier die LP umgedreht werden - unschön, aber zu verkraften.
PPS. Wenn ich amazon korrekt verstehe, dann werden alle "emg"-Produktion erst nach amazon-Bestellung als CD-R gefertigt. Nette Praxis, das erklärt das reduzierte Outfit.

　南部ソウルの奇才、スワンプ・ドッグことジェリー・ウィリアムズ・ジュニアが73年にファンガスという小レーベルで出した、ニュー・オーリンズR&Bの女王、アーマ・トーマスのアルバムにシングルだけの曲を加えたものです。

　以前にUKのエースからの A Woman's Viewpoint というアーマの70年代録音集にもこの盤の全曲が取り上げられています。今回は東洋の仏教への興味も窺えるジャケットが表に出ているだけでなく、プロデューサーのスワンプ・ドッグ本人がこの盤に向けたライナーノーツで当時の状況を語っています。それによると、70年か71年の録音で、シングルはマッスル・ショールズ、アルバムはカプリコーン・スタジオで録音されたということです。UKのエースのライナーノーツでははっきりしていなかった亡くなる前のデュアン・オールマンの参加がちとあやふやに証言されています。アルバムで二曲に参加、ということですが、むしろシングルのB面のWe Won't Be in Your Way Anymore の方がソウルやR&Bに似つかわしくないギターバリバリのデュアンらしい感じです。

　スワンプ・ドッグにとっての最高傑作のドリス・デュークへのプロデュース作の路線に乗ったもので、南部ソウルとアーマの歌声の組み合わせは素晴らしいものです。当時隆盛の不倫ソングに対する浮気される側を歌った She'll Never Be Your Wife や、アイザック・ヘイズの長尺ものに影響されたようなアーマ最大のヒット Wish Someone Would Care の再録音といった曲者もあったりと、スワンプ・ドッグ流の打たれてもへこたれない強い女性をアーマが貫禄十分に演じている印象です。
