Kwpluckett #85: Igby Goes Down (2002)

Igby Goes Down on Letterboxd

Man, I remember this trailer... I always wanted to watch this when I was younger.

This movie is twisted, edgy in that late 90s early 00s way. Darkly comedic, torturous, condescending. This is the kind of coming of age story you'd expect from someone deeply troubled with a whole lotta family issues. If not, well they do a great job at presenting something stupendously, believably horrendous.

The writing feels a bit dated, and it's not necessarily a bad thing. This is a script that was clearly written in a post-Pulp Fuction, post-Chasing Amy era in which all films strive to have witty dialogue, complex overly educated characters with lots of baggage, and intertwining relationships that drive the plot forward in unsually dire, dark and dreary ways.

The acting/ cast is fantastic. Kieran Culkin is fantastic as the titular character Igby. He manages to be both likeable and aggravating. Claire Danes, Amanda Peet, Ryan Phillippe and Jeff Goldblume are all terrific here and of course, let's not forget... Susan Sarandon. She is perfectly unlikable here.

Anyways, I thought this was pretty good. Better than I thought it would be, and I'm glad I finally gave it a watch.

A 3.5 out 5.
