Police in Massachusetts are asking for the public's help in their efforts to identify a man who investigators say shot an ATM at an ice cream stand in Chelmsford.Chelmsford police Chief Colin Spence said that shortly before 7:20 a.m. Friday, officers responded to a business at 55 Graniteville Road — the listed address for Sully's Ice Cream Stand — after receiving a report of shell casings in the parking lot and damage to the ATM on property.Investigators recovered eight spent shell casings from the scene, and they saw the ice cream stand's ATM had been struck by several rounds of ammunition, according to Spence.Spence said Chelmsford police received a report of loud bangs in the area of Sully's Ice Cream Stand at about 1:40 a.m. Friday, but responding officers were unable to confirm gunshots were fired at that time.The police chief said that when investigators reviewed surveillance footage, they saw a lone male approach the ATM and shoot it multiple times with a black handgun.That suspect approached the ice cream stand on foot and also left the area on foot, Spence said."It's a little unsettling," said Ricky Sullivan, owner of Sully's Ice Cream Stand. "Maybe he was trying to shoot his way in. I don't know. We don't know that." Sullivan said the ATM, which is frequently used since Sully's is a cash-only business, now has eight bullet imprints in it.Sully's Ice Cream Stand has been a family-run business since 1986, and Sullivan said he's never seen anything like what he witnessed on the surveillance video."This is a first. You don't think you're going to see too many firsts anymore," Sullivan said. "I've got great neighbors, and they've all got a lot of young kids, so it's unsettling for them." Chelmsford police said the male suspect appears to be at least 6 feet tall and weighs approximately 250 pounds. At the time of the incident, the suspect appeared to be wearing a dark green or gray hooded sweatshirt with a light-colored T-shirt underneath, as well as dark pants and dark basketball shoes with white soles.Spence said Chelmsford police are also seeking a vehicle that appears to be a light-colored Chevrolet Malibu sedan with a model year from 2019 to 2023, or a car of a similar make or model, in connection with the incident. Investigators said that the vehicle was parked nearby and driven from the area at a time consistent with the timeframe of the shooting.The Chelmsford Police Department has shared two video clips and a still image showing the suspect, as well as an image of the suspect vehicle."I'd like a conclusion and find out what's going on," Sullivan said.Spence said anyone with information regarding the incident should call the Chelmsford Police Department Criminal Bureau at 978-256-2521, extension 5.
