Ice Age: Continental Drift (working title and previously named Ice Age: Th4w) is a 2012 3D computer animated comedy adventure film and the fourth installment of the Ice Age franchise. It was released in 2-D and 3-D on July 13, 2012.[8].[9]

Plot[]

The film begins with Scrat traveling in a mountain to bury his new acorn but when he buries it the mountain opens in two parts and the squirrels falls by the Dinosaur World (where Buck is still fighting Rudy) until the center of Earth. There, trying to get the acorn, Scrat starts to run which cause the continental drift. Then he's spitted out and finishes in the sea where he's stranded on a mini-iceberg while he loses the acorn again when it falls in another mini-iceberg that he can't reach without dying drowned. Frustrated that he caused all that trouble only to lose his acorn, Scrat starts screaming.

Meanwhile, Manny is now an overprotective father towards a teenager Peaches due to its old family's death. One morning she wakes up early while he, Ellie, Crash and Eddie are sleeping and goes to the falls with her best friend, a teenage molehog named Louis but they're soon busted, and an angry Manny takes Peaches back home.

Diego gets hit by a car-like tree which is guided by Sid's family which is searching for Sid after abbandoning him in the first film.

Thanks to Diego, the "car" stops when he prevents it from hitting Peaches. Then Sid arrives and is initially happy to see them again but they abbandon him again when he goes away for a second revealing to have searched for him just to dump him his Granny, much to Manny and Sid's horror and sadness.

While searching for Granny when she's missing, Manny sees Peaches and Louis going to the falls and gets mad. When Peaches meets her crush Ethan, Manny arrives and says her that she's grounded accidentally humiliating her in front of the other teenagers. So, they start arguing and an angry Peaches says that she wishes he wasn't her father, to Manny's sadness. Before Manny can say something, the continental drift separates Manny, Sid and Diego from the rest of the Herd stranding them on an icerbeg which travels to the drift with Manny promising to come back for them and asks them to go the land bridge. Then Ellie less the Herd and the animals of the valley to the land bridge before the walls crashes them.

After a storm, Manny, Sid and Diego discovers that Granny was just sleeping in a tree which happened to be in the same iceberg where they are stranded, much to Sid's happiness. However, her sassiness and grumpiness, annoys Manny and Diego a bit.

Meanwhile Scrat founds an island and there he founds a map under the sea for an island full of acorns and decides to travel towards it, but he gets captured by a mysterious and sinister enormous ship-like iceberg.

The enormous iceberg reveals to be the ship of a group of evil pirates led by an evil and murderous Gigantopithecus named Gutt and, after hearding about their arrival and having captured Scrat, he captures Manny, Sid, Diego and Granny and tries to force them to join him, but they refuse and while escaping they accidentally destroy the iceberg. However, both groups survive, with Gutt plotting revenge on them, especially on Manny.

While being stranded on an icerberg again, they find Gutt's first mate, a female white sabertooth tiger named Shira and saves her while she was drowning after being left behind by her own team. However, she shows no gratitude and plans to come back to Gutt once they separate despite Diego falls in love with her.

The next day they find a tropical island and once they arrive Manny decide to build a boat, but Shira tries to escape. Diego stops her and discovers that they're on Switchback Cove, the way for their home but he sees that Gutt, and his henchmen arrived in that island too and they enslaved a group of Hyraxes to make them build a new ship for them.

Manny plans to steal the ship from Gutt and they team up with other Hyraxes to free the other Hyraxes and stealing the ship to use it come back to home.

The plan succeeds, with Shira even helping Diego to escape after she fell in love with him, and she's threatened by Gutt for her betrayal.

That night, the group meets a group of shape-shifting sea creatures similar to monsters (they're supposed to be sirens) which assumes the forms of what they find attractive or what they desire (for Diego Shira, for Sid a female blonde sloth, for Granny a muscular sloth and for Manny Ellie and Peaches) to eat them but Manny wakes up from their trick and he saves his friends from being eaten. The sirens are furious to have lost their preys but they discover Scrat traveling on an ice ball close to them and they decide to first assume the form of Scratte to attire him to his death but it fails as Scrat remembers their incident and then they succeeds when they assume the form of his acorn, however this turns against them when Scrat tries to bury it accidentally killing one of them which turns the sirens more furious and they starts chasing him while trying to bury him as acorns as revenge, much to Scrat's horror and panic.

After escaping from the sirens, Granny is throwing food at the sea convicted that there's her pet Precious, which Manny, Sid and Diego presumes to be either an imaginary pet or that it deceased. Then they discover that they finally arrived.

However, they discover that Gutt captured Ellie, Peaches, the Herd and the animals as his obstages. Manny offers himself if Gutt leaves his family go but Gutt dosen't respect the deal and prepares to kill him and everything he loves. Luckily Louis arrives and helps them by injuring Gutt and freeing both Manny and Peaches. It starts a huge battle between the Herd and Gutt's henchmen where Granny's pet Precious turns out to be real and to be a huge whale which helps, she and Sid to defeat the enemies. Unluckily Gutt dosen't get hit by Precious and attacks Manny again but they're stranded on an iceberg while they fight.

Manny defeats Gutt by using his weight to make him fall updown and uses the same tree he was gonna use against him to throw him away. After that Manny is saved by Precious while the sirens see Gutt and takes the form of a female of his species. When Gutt comes too close to their shell, the siren reveals his true form and pulls him inside the close which closes, and all can be heard are Gutt's yells of pain while the siren beats him while trying to eat him alive as more sirens swim towards them.

Manny reunites with Ellie and Peaches and Sid and Granny are respected as heroes, with Shira becoming Diego's girlfriend. After their valley was destroyed, the Herd moves to a new valley led by the Hyraxes which welcomes them with open arms.

Peaches and Louis can't wait to explore the place and Manny allows them showing to have learn to let her live her life as they both reconcile while Sid gives a pair of new teeth to Granny.

The film ends with Scrat finally reaching the island on the map, Scratlantis (a Scrat version of Atlantis), a floating city filled with other sabre-toothed squirrels and nuts. However, Scrat, due to his nut obsession, grabs many nuts in a frenzy and eventually attempts to grab a giant one blocking a hole. He grabs it, despite the sabre-toothed squirrel leader's warnings, causing the city to sink to the bottom of the ocean, leaving Scrat in the middle of a newly created land: the desert. Scrat's eyes burn, and he screams in pain and frustration.

Reception[]

Despite receiving mixed reviews from film critics, the film was well welcomed by audience. People praised it for its animation, humor, the character of Granny, the soundtrack, the villains, the action scenes and the message while criticizing it for Peaches's subplot, Diego and Shira's relationship and for being highly inferior to its predecessors with some calling it the beggining of the decline of the franchise.
