I Got to Try It One Time, originally simply titled Millie, is an often overlooked album by Ms. Jackson because it was sandwiched between two of her most popular albums, It Hurts So Good and Caught Up. On first listen, it appears to be lacking, but in reality it was probably her best album up to that point. It Hurts So Good is a near masterpiece but the second half of that album was weak in comparison to the first. There may not be as many stand-out tracks, but I Got to Try It One Time is a much more well-rounded experience overall, and each track is soulful as hell. The best track is the opener, "How Do You Feel the Morning After". I'm also quite fond of "One Night Stand", "A Letter Full of Tears", "I Gotta Do Something About Myself", and "Watch the One Who Brings You the News". As with most of Millie Jackson's albums, this one is definitely a keeper.

On her first album,Millie Jackson had to fight against violins and unaproppriate,cheerful,Motown-like music backing. On the second ("It Hurts So Good") she found great producer (Brad Shapiro) who understand her and moved her further in funk teritory, perfectly suitable for her strong, passionate voice. On this, her third LP from 1974. Millie finally blossomed in a full throated soul singer who could cover Gladys Knight's "Letter Full Of Tears" and actually sound really great - althought its strange to hear this song without The Pips at the backing vocals, she uses her vocal similarity to Knight with a great advantage (and being somehow more earthy than Knight,Jackson is my favourite, sorry Gladys!). The first song ("How Do You Feel The Morning After") is really beautiful, but it's the last, funny and chunky "In The Wash" that points a direction Jackson would explore with a big artistic succes on her next album "Caught Up",the subject of anger, betrayal and defiance. And yes, having Cissy Houston for backing vocals helps as well...
