Screen Rant brings you an exclusive trailer for I Am Fear, a supernatural political thriller that combines preternatural elements with a terrorist kidnapping plot to explore the modern meaning of fear.
Working alongside film company Shout! Factory, director Kevin Shulman brings to the screen a tense story of kidnapping, terrorism, and supernatural dread. Horror fans can rejoice as I Am Fear reunites some of the cast members from 2007’s Halloween, including horror icons Kristina Klebe (Hellboy, Don’t Kill It), Bill Moseley (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3, House of 1000 Corpses, 3 From Hell), and William Forsythe (The Devil’s Rejects). Joining them on the big screen are Eoin Macken (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Nightflyers), Faran Tahir (Iron Man, Star Trek), and Christian Oliver (Hunters). A political movie, I Am Fear explores the inner workings of a terrorist sleeper cell team, instilling contemporary fears around extremism with an “ancient evil” to provide a complete view of society’s fear pathology.
I Am Fear combines the high-intensity tension of kidnap thrillers like The Call with the corner-of-your-eye terror of supernatural flicks like Paranormal Activity and The Babadook. In grappling with the awful power of terrorist groups, its politic-aware messaging falls in line with the recent interest in films with a political backdrop such as the controversial 2020 adaptation The Hunt. In I Am Fear, Sara Brown, a right-wing celebrity journalist, is one of two prisoners kidnapped by a terrorist group based out of Los Angeles. I Am Fear ponders upon exactly what it means to be afraid in the modern era. “They [the terrorists] wish to show the world the true face of terror, but how can they, when even they have not seen it yet?”
The specific nature of fear explored within the movie is one born out of contemporary America. In the film, terrorists threaten to behead their captives through a live webcast on 4th of July weekend. Many of its most terrifying moments are seeded through with recognizable realities of modern American life. It amps up the tension by setting the plot up against the backdrop of vicious Californian fires. The trailer explores concepts that have formed the basis for public discourse over the last five years: truth, fear, knowledge. The movie unflinchingly explores the use of terror as a weapon. With supernatural elements, explorations of fear, kidnappings, and deadlines, I Am Fear sets itself up as a tightly woven tapestry of tense story-telling, finely tuned to explore relevant realities.
