Cait Sith - Original verses rebirth

REMAKE

What is your opinion? I hated Cait in the original, yet loved him in the remake. What is the reason?

For me, it's a number of things:

  • Realising after 20+ years that Cait Sith is the cat, not the big-ass Mog.

  • Something about a voiced character really helps. He was very hard to 'like' in the original, especially considering his origins, but a voice helps 'humanise' a character.

  • Gameplay. In the original, pretty much all characters could get the same Stats, give or take some HP differences (unless they're using HP Plus to get to the 9,999 ceiling, in which case the point is moot). The difference between characters lies in Ultimate Weapons and their Limit Breaks, and Sith's straight-up sucks. In Rebirth the combat mechanics are a little different and so the limitations of the original do not apply.

I never really understood his rationale for stealing the keystone and also felt his 'sacrifice' in the temple then immediately reappearing felt a bit insincere. I thought rebirth would explain these a bit more, but it didn't really add too much!

Overall he is far more developed in rebirth, and has gone from quirky side character to being more integrated into the main team.

Right? Like in rebirth, he comes right out and reveals he works for shinra and acts like he’s a rebel on our side. Then betrays us anyway. His excuse is pretty half baked.

That's how it goes down in OG sure, but in Rebirth from the player's perspective I thought it was made pretty clear that Reeve was the man behind the robot, so to speak. Reeve, whilst definitely being clearly the most sympathetic of the Shinra board, was still a Shinra employee so the eventual betrayal was seeded better imo.

I was just thinking how it was weird we only saw one cut scene of Reeve in rebirth (as far as I can remember atm) I kinda wanted to see more of him.

He seems to get a lot of hate, and I kinda get why, but I honestly didn't mind him that much. His part in Chapter 11 is trash tho, but moreso because it's just plain dull.

Completely agree. The voice actor has done bits for this part.

? Cait was broken OP in the original PS1 version. You could basically solo the entire game with them.

I'm assuming they fixed that in the PC/Switch releases.

Solo the entire game with cait sith in OG FF7? How? He doesn’t join til later on.

They did. Its hard adjusting after 20+ years

He's a main party member that doesn't have a whole load of impact or time dedicated to his character in the original, I like what they did with him in Rebirth. I don't like using him in combat though, he feels too slow and clunky for me.
