I am Brian Wilson: A Memoir Audio CD – Audiobook, October 11, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
They say there are no second acts in American lives, and third acts are almost unheard of. That's part of what makes Brian Wilson's story so astonishing.
As a cofounding member of the Beach Boys in the 1960s, Wilson created some of the most groundbreaking and timeless popular music ever recorded. With intricate harmonies, symphonic structures, and wide-eyed lyrics that explored life's most transcendent joys and deepest sorrows, songs like "In My Room", "God Only Knows", and "Good Vibrations" forever expanded the possibilities of pop songwriting. Derailed in the 1970s by mental illness, drug use, and the shifting fortunes of the band, Wilson came back again and again over the next few decades, surviving and - finally - thriving. Now, for the first time, he weighs in on the sources of his creative inspiration and on his struggles, the exhilarating highs and the debilitating lows.
I Am Brian Wilson reveals as never before the man who fought his way back to stability and creative relevance, who became a mesmerizing live artist, who forced himself to reckon with his own complex legacy and completed Smile, the legendary unfinished Beach Boys record that had become synonymous with both his genius and its destabilization. Today Brian Wilson is older, calmer, and filled with perspective and forgiveness. Whether he's talking about his childhood, his bandmates, or his own inner demons, Wilson's story, told in his own voice and in his own way, unforgettably illuminates the man behind the music, working through the turbulence and discord to achieve, at last, a new harmony.

I'm from Southern California but right now my surroundings say I'm in another Solar System. I've only read 12 paragraphs. Soft serene water is floating on the top of my eyes. This makes me feel peaceful.
Brian Wilson has spoken about things inside his head. If you're life has been enjoined with the non material world the way his has, I think you'll already feel less lonely reading his opening words.
I haven't read further, but this obviously is a memoir that is put together the way it should be. The more you're life has been touched by his music (especially if your emotions and thoughts are in the outlier spectrum) the more you'll get it. Until the pages change my mind I'm giving it a 5 star review.
It's now 1 week later and I finished the book. The 5 star review stands. You know when you truly understand a subject you can sum it up in 1 small sentence of simple words. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 if the subject is significantly more complex. It was surprising and affecting how Brian could do this on so many different experiences of his life that are hard to nail down in words from which we all may have experienced. They were said in a way that was spot on and new. Those sentences I reflected on. I'm sure others did and will also. One other outstanding aspect was delivering his story (which was written so,so,so, many times) with fresh "stories" which were also clarifying regarding who Brian is,why he did what he did,how he really felt about it,and what happened. I believe that is a very high highlight for all readers who've read about the band and him before. This is nowhere near the "same old same"
Lastly this book shows Brian really embodies the well known phrase "still waters run deep". This made me happy because mental illness doesn't help intelligence. You have to pull it out of it. Exponentially harder than those who are blessed without this Sisyphus problem. Do you want to know a bit about the creative process? This too is discussed very well though I get the feeling Brian could deliver a 5000 page book on that subject. But then who would buy a 5000 page book? I know I would.
Everyone knows that first one was largely a work of fiction—as this memoir makes very clear.
What I loved about this was how it really reads like you’re hearing Brian tell anecdotes about his life, in no particular order. That’s also something that at first was a little odd to me. But, it is a memoir, so it is linked together by theme, not by chronology.
I also like that it doesn’t give juicy details of his life, but rather the overall state of his mind, his concerns and his struggles. He doesn’t throw anyone “under the bus” which is to his credit. He’s not shy about the harm that Dr. Landry did to him and the suffering he experienced.
There is no attempt in this book to present an image of Brian. He exposes himself with his ego, sometimes very odd sense of humor, musical ambition and fears of intimacy. Great book.
The book is in tell tale form, as if Brian is sitting with us in our living rooms and talking to us personally. The most amazing thing of all to me is his humility and genuine goodness. He has met and been friends with the most famous people in the world - presidents, The Beatles, especially Paul McCartney, and a list of other musicians too long to mention in a review. He has received the Kennedy Award and is enjoying tremendous success touring behind his "Pet Sounds" 50th Anniversary tour. Still, there remains the feeling that nobody could be more approachable if the circumstances permitted, nor be more gracious and kind to you and I in person than Brian Wilson.
His first solo album from a couple decades ago, "Brian Wilson", contained extra tracks and snippets, among them his thoughts on "Love and Mercy", and while at the time the notorious monster Eugene Landy, the psychotic psychiatrist and crook was abusing Wilson terribly, Brian still had the wish that love and mercy should be extended to all, and that his true reward was giving his music and gifts rather than receiving. This is so rare in the age where narcissism reigns supreme that you can't help but be moved.
The book is a must have for all Brian Wilson fans, and I will be checking out his new live CD/DVD soon. I wish I could one day meet this great man, who has overcome so much adversity and came out as one of the most beloved rock stars of all time. It won't happen, but in the very remote chance he might just read this review, I want to say to Mr. Wilson: thank you so very very much for all you have accomplished and taught us. There will never be another one like you.

He doesn't go into deep descriptions but it's very interesting to see his life through his eyes.
At the end I came away from the book liking Brian Wilson but feeling a bit sorry for him.
I read this book together with Mike Love's Good Vibrations in order to have the two sides of the coin.
Brian Wilson always "wins".
Enjoy!
