English Lyrics

Official Singable Lyrics

The official English translation of the lyrics to "Baka Mitai" as written in Yakuza: Like a Dragon. The lyrics are stylized, as they are intended to be singable. Opening comments officially translated into English are included.

Nanba: This one's a real classic (Yakuza: Like a Dragon)
Kiryu: I sing... for you

I've been a fool, and you've been childish
You fell down, you got hurt chasing sweeter dreams
Never could hide the truth in your eyes
That's how I knew that smile was a lie

I love you is something you never say
Couldn't get it out, always just pulled away
So then why, please won't you tell me why
You could find the words to say goodbye

I'm such a mess, I'm lost, I'm no good at this
I'm in love, still in love, still in love with you
Hard as I try, I can't even drink this pain away
Memories of you, twisting my view, I've been a fool

Literal English Lyrics

A literal English translation of the Japanese lyrics to "Baka Mitai". These lyrics are not intended to be singable, but are provided as an alternative translation with stylistic liberties kept to an absolute minimum. Opening comments that have not been officially translated into English or are not already in English originally are translated and included.

It should be noted that the song is written from the perspective of a woman reflecting on her relationship with her ex-fiance or ex-husband, although the lyrics are ambiguous regarding this at the start. This is due to the fact that the song uses vague wording and very few pronouns in the beginning, is written in the Kansai dialect (in which certain "feminine" ways of speaking are less gendered), and is sung exclusively by men. This translation aims to preserve the song's initial ambiguity.

Kiryu: Please, listen - "Baka Mitai" / Haruka: Do your best! (Yakuza 5)
Akiyama: Please, listen - "Baka Mitai" / Haruka: Do your best! (Yakuza 5)
Saejima: "Baka Mitai," take a listen (Yakuza 5)
Nanba: Pay attention, I'm singin' (Yakuza: Like a Dragon)

What a fool; how childish
Went chasing a dream and got hurt
Poorly disguised behind a joyless smile[a]

"I love you" is hardly ever said
Tongue-tied and downright self-conscious
But even so, even so, why is it
"Goodbye" came so naturally?[b]

It's no use, no use, no use at all
I love you, I love you far too much
No matter how strong the drink
The memories don't fade—what a fool

The in-game version of "Baka Mitai (I've Been a Fool)" ends here. The following are the lyrics to the full version of the song.

What a fool; honestly, what a fool
Filled to the brim with faith in you
I play the part of the strong woman and bathe in the suffocating night air

Since I've been alone, three years have passed
Even the city streets have changed
But even so, even so, why is it
I'm still left behind in the past?

Really, you're a no-good man, no good at all
My matching ring, I take it off
Serves you right! I'm relieved
Yet naively I still wait—what a fool

It's no use, no use, no use at all
I love you, I love you far too much
No matter how strong the drink
The memories don't fade—what a fool

Really, you're a no-good man, no good at all
My matching ring, I take it off
Serves you right! I'm relieved
So then what are they, these tears—what a fool

Chinese Lyrics

Kiryu: 这首歌……送给大家。

活像个傻瓜 这幼稚的模样
追着梦最后落得遍体鳞伤
明知道 根本不会说话 强颜的微笑却又挤在脸上

I love you 也 在心里口难开

Trivia

  • The jazz arrangement of Baka Mitai — Baka Mitai [Jazz Version] — can be heard playing in the background in various establishments from Yakuza 5 onwards.
  • Both Baka Mitai and Baka Mitai -sorrow- [Instrumental Version] can also be heard playing in the background at the Karaoke Bar in Yakuza Kiwami 2, despite the song not being featured as a singable track in-game.
  • Every cutscene for Baka Mitai features the singer looking at a different photograph.
    • Kiryu has a photo of Sunflower Orphanage (Yakuza 0), himself and Pocket Circuit Fighter in 1988 (Yakuza Kiwami), Mame (Yakuza 5), another picture of himself and Fighter in 2016 (Like A Dragon Gaiden) and Mame's birthday (Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth)
    • Saejima has a photo of himself and Yasuo Sodachi.
    • Akiyama has a photo of himself from when he was homeless.
    • Nanba has a photo of the chief of the homeless area.
    • Instead of a photograph, Ryoma gazes at the Shinto Priest in the audience.
  • Nanba's version, as well as non-Japanese dubs of Kiryu's version, use a slightly remixed version of the backing track with more prominent synth in the intro and outro.

Notes

  1. A more direct translation of the line 「嘘が下手なくせに 笑えない笑顔みせた」 would be "Bad at lying, (I/you) showed (you/me) an unsmiling smile"
  2. A more direct translation of the line 「(どうして)サヨナラは言えたの」 would be "(How come) 'goodbye' could be said?"
