2009 eight disc (six CDs + two DVDs) box set from the British singer/songwriter that includes the CDs The Apprentice (1990), Cooltide (1991), Classics (double CD) and Classics Live (double CD) plus two DVDs: The Apprentice and Live With Danny Thompson. This special collection of Martyn's work includes releases from his critically acclaimed comeback period in the early '90s, which saw Martyn receiving some of the best reviews of his career. Apart from The Apprentice and Cooltide, the two double disc sets allow fans to catch up on his past works and experience Martyn's best moments in a whole light. The first of the two DVDs, The Apprentice, is John at his best performing with his band featuring Dave Gilmour. The second DVD features John performing alongside the legendary bassist, Danny Thompson.

I have been a fan of John Martyn since the 70's. I first became acquainted with him through the album "Bless the Weather" and then "Solid Air" ; saw him in concert a number of times during that time. After the release of "Sunday's Child", he changed style, became more "electrified" a la Dylan and then after a brief foray into more oriented material languished in relative obscurity on various independent labels - one of whom was Permanent Records. Following his untimely death back in 09 interest for all things Martyn has increased and so his old record company put out all that it had on this inexpensive no-frills box set containing two studio albums plus a double live CD of the 'Live at Shaw Theatre" gig (truncated version of the same on DVD) also a double album of re-recorded classic Martyn featuring Phil Collins, David Gilmour and Leven Helm. There is also an excellent reminder of the John Martyn of old in a special made for TV concert live from Dublin with his old cohort Danny Thompson. So in all six Cd's and two DVD's (which should play on your computer). I found that from a musical standpoint, there is much to be enjoyed, and that even in his latter years, john could still mesmerize and enchant you with his meliflous vocals and tasty guitar. Some complain that the arrangements are too slick but I found the remakes were authentic and retained a certain charm of the original but simply with updated instrumentation. there are a few typos and of course it is always nice to read liner notes etc, but in terms of musical value it is a pretty good deal.
Great set! Two great live shows on DVD (and I do mean GREAT!) and a few albums, not his best albums, but still well worth having. If you are a real fan you may already have some of the albums, but then you can give away duplicates to friends or relatives. I am so happy with this addition to my already over 30 CD and DVD collection of John's amazing music.
