Leon is the master of the keyboard, no matter the genre. The arrangements are beautiful and his playing is what you'd expect it to be - magnificent. This was serendipity for me as I never knew it existed until I stumbled upon it on Amazon. Now I'm so glad to have it for the holidays. Thanks, Leon!

I feel bad enough giving it two stars... sorry but this is only for people who want to have the whole Leon Russell catalog. It says "piano and orchestra" but it is "piano and synthesizer..." It's a sound that doesn't vary much from song to song and frankly it gets very tedious to listen to. If he'd have only sung on some of these! (it's all synth-strumental). And yes, I agree with the other reviewer, that's a great picture of Leon on the cover and the white beard reminds you of Santa Claus. Okay then. If that is all you want from this record, then buy it.

Leon Russell's "Hymns Of Christmas" is a very enjoyable holiday offering. All the selections are instrumental, but played with Leon's ear catching keyboard style. The cd is full of x-mas classics that we all know and love. The cover photo of leon's long white hair and beard really give the cd that Santa Claus holiday feel. The perfect gift for that 40 and over baby boomer this Christmas.

Leon Russell, what a shame that his talent has been kept hidden for so many years. I am excited to get whatever recordings of his that I can. Hymns of Christmas is strictly instrumental but the beautiful sounds resonating harmoniously make up for no vocals. Definately a favorite CD to play all year around. Who ever said that Christmas music is just for Christmas. They are songs, enjoy them all the time.

No my favorite but I love anything Leon Did. Love his raspy voice and all his music.

This is an absolutely superb presentation of Christmas music, and his arrangements are detailed, intricate and very difficult. He certainly displays his command of the piano, even surpassing the late Liberace.

BEAUTIFUL! Wonderful familiar Christmas hymns with the unmistakable Genius of Leon at the piano!!

Obviously most of these reviewers didn't read anything about Leon's intentions when he recorded this CD. These Christmas songs were his mother's favorites. His talent as a true classical pianist shine through on this offering. When he first was learning to play piano, he was being primed as a classical pianist.
Leon has had many harsh reviews from the critics, because he has never been locked into one genre. Throughout his career he has been bold and fearless at his trade. How many players, no matter what instrument they play, can go from his gospel Rock & Roll beginnings (after backing Sinatra and tons of huge performers in the studio), to Jazz, Country and even blue grass and do each of them as though he'd done each as his only genre?
You can argue until the "cows come home", that this isn't what you expect from Leon, but that is what makes him a master! He can literally do it all. If he has showed the music industry anything, it is his diversity that continues to leave a legacy and the public should NEVER expect anything from him except a great performance from the studio or when you see him live.
And for the person who is waiting for Leon to sing Christmas hymns, wake up. His singing voice wasn't intended for crooning or caroling.
If you want very nice back ground music while opening presents with your loved ones, this is exactly what Leon was offering.

Decepcionante
Reviewed in Spain on January 2, 2013
Una autentica decepcion para los seguidores de este artista. Mas bien parece un disco de R. Clayderman que del hombre que grababa con Spector.
