This small museum is well done, presenting primarily lesser known American artists. The exhibit of American Impressionists was very good, even though we were not familiar with the artists. The collection of animal sculptures done in silver is especially wonderful.

The children's exhibit room is exceptional. The walk through time exhibit is a good introduction to Western Art applicable to all age groups.

My son and I visited this museum as part of a weekend trip to the Madison County area. The special exhibit we most wanted to see was Dorthea Lance’s America. This was a very touching collection of her famous depression error photography. It was quite beautiful if a little sad. Definitely a reminder to be grateful for the abundance that we currently live with. There was also a display of the Huntsville Photographic Society. This is the second time I’ve seen one of their annual exhibits, and it always delivers. There are some truly amazing photographs. We had seen much of their permanent collection before but enjoyed a special memorial exhibit of local artist Betty Grisham. We believe that it is very important to support the art and to take your children to museums. We believe in telling them to like what they like and find beauty around them.

Small museum with some great exhibits. Everything is on the main floor so its smaller than you would think looking from the outside. As a result, only a small fraction of the permanent collection is on view at any given time.
We especially liked the Buccellati: A Silver Menagerie and Betty Grisham: A Celebration exhibits.
Also there is an area I will call "20,000 years of Art History" It is well done and informative.
Free parking for 12 hours with validation. (you won't need that long)

What a great trip for an intro into Art for my DD daughter who is 16. It was just small enough and covered a lot of major art categories. She especially like the YAM young artists art on display. We enjoyed all the galleries--especially the sterling silver animal carvings!

This is a gem of a museum! It’s permanent collection is impressive and interestingly varied. There is something for everyone. The exhibits were curated to perfection. What a delight to have stumbled onto this museum our first day in Huntsville. It set the tone for a lovely long weekend. Highlights include: the gracious, friendly staff - they each greeted us enthusiastically and thanked us for coming to visit; the stellar Buccellati Silver Sculpture Collection (the largest in the U.S. -donated by a local woman); and the Children’s Art section. This Museum could have easily been in New York; it was of that quality. The Museum was pristine and the various exhibits were curated with the utmost respect & professionalism. This is a “must-see” in beautiful, central Huntsville.

Outstanding artwork in a user friendly environment. This is a special place, and at this writing (August 2022) the entire museum is filled with artwork by female artists. The curators strike the right balance between abstract and traditional items. Everything was a feast for my eyes. On a Saturday, I parked for free in a garage designated “parking for Huntsville Museum of Art” one block away. Near the building they have a dedicated lot. My visit here was well worth their admission fee. I look forward to visiting again next time I am in Huntsville.

"Don't go to a museum with a destination. Museums are wormholes to other worlds. They are ecstasy machines. Follow your eyes to wherever they lead you...and the world should begin to change for you."
- Jerry Saltz

My first visit to the Huntsville Museum of Art was quite extraordinary!

We were met at the door by a graceful, refined young woman from the museum staff who made us feel wholly at home instantly, and as we entered the innermost parts of the museum, it was readily apparent that the museum is chic, elegant, and sophisticated, but oozing with good ole southern charm and gentility.

We went to hear Medal of Honor Recipient, Clinton Romesha, in a conversation with Lieutenant General Jim Pillsbury, USA (Ret.).

Yes, we were in "rare air" as Jay Town said as he eloquently introduced Retired Staff Sergeant Romesha, one of about 3,500 heroic men and women to receive the Medal of Honor.

We didn't go looking for the extraordinary, but the extraordinary found us at the Huntsville
Museum of Art.

Bravo!

The people of Huntsville as well the curator has done an exceptional job at putting together an awesome museum. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much when we make our departure for the museum. This area, although nice for business, isn't well known for the arts. The museum is a tad on the small side but don't let that fool you. It is nicely appropriated with quality works from very well recognized artists as well as some local artists and they have a rotating display of artworks to keep it fresh. The museum is well laid out, there are plenty of very comfortable lounge seats to sit down if you would like and contemplate the pieces. I cannot say enough about the beauty of this museum. It is definitely something that the city of Huntsville should be promoting more! I walked away astounded. By the way, this trip was with my two daughters, ages 9 & 7. The enjoyed it but I would probably leave the children at home next time. I was a little rushed by them so keep that in mind if you are taking children. There isn't much there to do with preteens or earlier. The one caveat, there are park benches out behind the museum that is on a man made lake. The ducks walk right up to you, so let them bring a loaf of bread and they will have a wonderful time feeding the ducks and goldfish in the lake.

You wouldn't necessarily expect such a wonderful art museum when you roll into Huntsville, Alabama, but this museum delivers the goods. Some smaller museums will try to build their reputation by purchasing one small DaVinci etching or study. The Huntsville Museum of Art doesn't go that route. Its collection includes top quality pieces from lesser known artists – but artists who deserve a wider audience. The facility is great. Exhibits are laid out well and well lighted. A permanent exhibit of art through the ages is a great way to give yourself and your kids a succinct overview of art from cave paintings to Pop Art.
