Simu Liu was born in Harbin, China, on April 19, 1989. After being raised by his grandparents for four years, his family took him to move out to Ontario, Canada. Later on, the young actor went to graduate from the University of Western Ontario in 2011, with a degree in business administration.

I was born in Harbin, China, in 1989, a time when you were trying to leave the country—no easy feat, in Deng Xiaoping’s regime—to start a better life abroad," he wrote. " I slept with Grandma and Grandpa in their bedroom, as I had done all my life. They were my parents, as far as I could comprehend."

7 Shortly After Graduating From College, He Became An Accountant

Acting wasn't supposed to happen for Liu, at least not in away he could have predicted. In fact, unlike many A-list Hollywood stars, Liu has never taken formal education in entertainment. Shortly after graduating, he used his degree to work on Bay Street as an accountant at Deloitte.

"It’s not what I wanted, but it was definitely a move to appease the parents. That, to me at the time, was what it meant to be a fully functional adult," he said during an interview with CNBC.

6 He Used To Model For Royalty-Free Stock Images

One of the career paths he explored after quitting his accounting job was modeling for royalty-free stock images at iStock. During a recent interview, the actor revealed that he was only paid "120 bucks" for the images after signing away the rights.

His portrayal of Jung Kim, a rebellious teenager and the son of the show's family, landed him massive recognition from fans and critics alike. The show was a big success, garnering a plethora of nominations from ACTRA Awards, Canadian Screen Awards, and more.

"It speaks to where we are as a whole in our representation and our voice at the current time," he spoke about the burden of representing the culture on the cultural comedy hit. "That being said, it’s a stepping stone to hopefully, one day, actors of color being able to answer questions about their show in the same way that anybody would be able to."
