On Friday night, we'll be over in Granville Island(our first time there),

our neice and nephew are driving over from Bellingham Washington. How do they get over to Granville Island from there?

I'm guessing there isn't a bride they can just drive over, so what

would be the best way for them to get there.

And...since we're on this topic, what would be the best way for us to go over there from downtown Vancouver, as we have

dinner reservations on Granville Island but for earlier

that evening.

Driving to Granville Island (GI) is relatively easy; it's parking that's the tough part. If they're coming from Bellingham, they'll be on Hwy 99, coming over the Oak St Bridge. They should stay on Oak, then make a left on Park (the next major light after King Edward). The road will curve uphill, then they should make a right on Hemlock; follow that down the hill past Broadway, then just before the on-ramp to the Granville St Bridge, take the left lane down to 2nd Ave, then once on 2nd make a quick right to GI. It will be slow going from there, but once on the island, head straight for the pay parking lots/sheds. Don't bother looking for free parking; unless you're there at 9am, or get lucky, it's hopeless.

I agree that getting to GI from downtown, the best way is via ferry.

Granville Island is not actually an island, so it is not difficult to get there if one has a car. If your niece and nephew use Mapquest, they will get good directions on how to access the "island" easily. This link will give you an idea of where Granville Island is situated: http://tinyurl.com/jrs2n. Look right at the top of the map (scroll it up to get a better view--where Cartwright is noted is the Island: I couldn't get Granville Island centered on the map).

From the downtown side, you can take one of two ferry companies: Aquabus or Granville Island Ferries. They leave from different spots (at the foot of Hornby or by the Aquativ Centre would be the likely ones if you are coming from a central downtown location). If you let me know where you will be coming from, then I can tell you more specifically where would be the best place to take the ferry. Also, False Creek, which the ferries cross, is not right downtown as such, so you may need to take transit or a cab to get there, depending on where you are located--or you could walk (a walk from Robson down Hornby to the ferry would take about 20 minutes).

We are staying at the Holiday Inn downtown Vancouver,

we'll need to go over to Granville Island to the Dockside

restaurant.
