I am under 18, but if my parents buy tickets for a rated r movie can I go in without them?
So basically, I am under 18 and for my birthday party I want to watch baby driver. My parents are thinking of buying the tickets before hand and me and a couple of friends all below 18 will go in to the theater, without my parents or any other adult above 18. Will the theater allow us in if we don't have someone with us above 18, but we have tickets?
Honestly, most theaters don't have particularly strict security. Buy a ticket for a different movie at the same time and just go see Baby Driver if you're that worried. I would be very surprised if they even noticed.

This was an excellent move when I was younger. So many theaters now have assigned seating though. I doubt Baby Driver would be packed but it could be crowded enough where you would have to sit in the front...F that.
Baby Driver is definitely not selling over 80% of its seats at this date... I think he's fine to get a good seat even if he buys at the door.
As an ex-Usher, I can promise you that we have people monitoring the screens and lobbies specifically to catch screen jumpers. We don't care, but if you're caught you can lose some kid their job while you just get asked to leave or buy a ticket. Have some consideration, man.
EDIT: I am from the UK so maybe things are different here.
I tried that with Scream. Ended up getting busted twice and had to see The Ghosts of Mississippi twice because the ushers busted us. The third time my buddy's mom bought us tickets and left...we still got busted.
You have to be 17 to buy tickets for R rated films. I guess it just comes down to who's working at the theater that night, and whether or not they take their jobs too seriously.
MPAA ratings aren't enforceable by law.
Whether or not you need to be 17 is entirely at the discretion of the theater.
Yeah, but if they already have the tickets purchased by their parents in advance (as OP is stating) that may be different.
Nope. You can be any age, I dare anyone try to stop me buying one thats bullshit lol
I think you're fine. Call the theater and ask.
It varied from theater to theater when I was a kid. Definitely call.
At my theater, you have to be 17 or up in order to see an R-rated movie. If your parents buy the tickets, they have to see the show and stay throughout the film's duration. If you are with friends and all are over 17 but you're not, you aren't getting in. Finally, in order for you to go in without parents, you act up or cause a disturbance you and your guardian/escort are kicked out of the film. One other point, you also need to have valid id that shows your birthday if you're between 17 - 25. If you look younger than 25, you will be carded.
I hope this sheds light.
Around where I live it's 17 and up to buy a ticket, but someone younger can go with someone who is over 21.
Which is weird, because they asked about it when I went with my GF and her younger brother to see Mad Max Fury Road, but when I went to see The World's End with someone under 17 and I wasn't 21 they didn't even bother to check. Same theater too.
Fascinating. Yeah, from what I'm understanding, your latter instance would lead to that cashier getting fired. My place has constant secret shoppers to make sure we're not just letting people in underage. Even still, our ushers make sure the adults/guardians that buy don't up and leave their theaters at the first drop leaving the underage viewer.
BUllshit
I did this a year back and they let me and my friends go in. But it could have changed and some theaters are more strict than others. Baby driver was amazing Have fun
Is Baby Driver seriously an R rated movie in what I'm assuming is the United States?
I know the US rating system is a joke with how easily a film gets an R rating but come on, Baby Driver a R?
The local theater doesn't care how old you are and will let you buy a Rated R ticket without a second thought. Unless they feel the movie is a "hard" R and they don't want kids in there.
It depends on the theater rules. I'm not sure even what is allowed today but at the time, I celebrated my birthday with a bunch of friends with watching scream 2. We were all in our early teens. My mother called our local theater and spoke to the head manager, the deal at that theater was that if a parent bought the tickets and other parents showed up to approve or have permission from another parent to allow another kid that isn't their's then it was fine for us to go in by ourselves. These days? I have no idea. Someone needs to call and ask.
Yee doggy
Youre not going to get arrested or anything so why not try.
No.
But it is all about if they catch you. If you try do it with a crowd it is going to be harder.
I just snuck into John wick 2 after buying Lego batman movie(watched this one too lol). They won't notice and if they do they won't care.
I work as a manager at a theater. The North America Theater Organization has "rules" that the theaters follow for rated R films. Basically they're supposed to follow this as best as possible so that real legislation from our government doesn't have to be made on punishment for bad movies.
The rule is: You must be 17 or older with a photo ID. Unless you go in with an adult 21 or older and they stay with you in the auditorium during the film.
Yes, you can buy the ticket for another movie and sneak in. All I ask as someone who works at a theatre, actually buy a ticket for something and be nice if you get caught and asked to leave/refund or watch the movie you bought for. Just don't be the person who sneaks in without paying anything, that you could get in trouble for. It's insanely unlikely that'll happen, but I wouldn't do it.
Depends on the theater. The one I worked at was strict if you didn't have someone over 21 escort someone under the age of 18. At times, they wouldn't start a movie until the underage left the theater.
Whatever happens enjoy the movie . You got good taste
