Why is Neighbours ending? How long it has been running and why it has been cancelled as last episode airs

The soap launched in 1985 and is the longest-running drama in Australia

Neighbours is airing for the final time on Friday 29 July after 37 years.

The show, which has run over 9,000 episodes, became particularly popular in the UK after the BBC decided to start running it on the 5pm slot in 1988.

Actor Alan Fletcher told Sky News, “Neighbours wouldn’t have lasted 37 years without the UK audience. We’re very very appreciative.

“We hope and pray that when you lot watch the final episode we will have done the show proud.”

The final episode will see the return of international stars Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Margot Robbie – who all got their big break as characters on the iconic Ramsay Street.

Why is Neighbours ending?

Channel 5 announced that it would be dropping Neighbours from its schedule in order to free up more funding for original UK dramas.

A spokesperson for the channel explained: “It’s been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we’d like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series.

“We’d also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years.

“We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision, however, our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers.”
