Miss World Philippines 2021 candidate Ann Palmares of Iloilo took inspiration from the city’s La Paz Batchoy for her national costume.
On Instagram, Thursday, she shared a series of her photos wearing the masterpiece featuring some of the dish’s ingredients, including noodles, soy sauce, eggs, and meat.
“For many years now, there is a delicacy that captured the taste of the Filipinos: This is the Original La Paz Batchoy,” she wrote.
The Ilongga beauty queen then used each of the dish’s ingredients to describe her costume, saying that it also showed how Ilonggos were in everyday life.
“The simple broth’s taste depicts the Ilonggos as the friendliest people in the country, warm and welcoming, gentle and soft-spoken,” she said.
According to Ann, the different kinds of meat in La Paz Batchoy are a “fusion of Ilonggo taste buds,” while the condiments are “from pre-hispanic traders.”
The round noodles, meanwhile, symbolize the Ilonggos’ close family ties which are firm and strong.
The Miss World Philippines candidate also added that the dish was full of love since it originated in La Paz District in Iloilo City or the City of Love.
Apart from it being comfort food, La Paz Batchoy also embodied the culture and history of Iloilo City which made it into what it’s known now, said Ann.
“A bowl of a delicious La Paz Batchoy is not only a [merienda] but also the journey of Ilonggo influences from the past to the present,” she said.
“[It molded] them into creative, practical, fun loving and God fearing persons, truly a treat of Ilonggos’ trait, identity and heritage,” she added.
Ann showcased her national costume at the Miss World Philippines 2021 Charity Gala Ball held at Okada Manila on Thursday night.
She is one of the 45 candidates who will vie for seven titles in the pageant: Miss World Philippines, Miss Supranational Philippines, Miss Eco Philippines, Reina Hispanoamericana Filipinas, Miss Multinational Philippines, Miss Eco Teen Philippines, and Miss Tourism Philippines.
