As crafting systems become more common, it's no surprise to see alchemy pop up more frequently in games. From the granular pixel simulating roguelike Noita to the classic Skyrim, there seems to be a universal joy in magically changing one substance into another.

Little Alchemy 2 is a browser and mobile game that's solely about this joy. Players only start with four ingredients: air, earth, fire, and water. Players can combine these base elements to create hundreds of items, from petroleum to Pinnochio.

Just like every game with a tech tree, players need to first get base ingredients before building up to more complex recipes. Little Alchemy 2's clay is both a figurative and literal building block substance, leading to small discoveries like pottery to massive discoveries like cities.

The Fastest Way to Get Clay

If the player is just starting out with just the four base ingredients, they can easily reach clay with a series of four two-item combinations:

  1. First, they need to combine earth with water to create mud.
  2. Second, they need to use earth again, combining it with fire to create lava.
  3. Once they have lava, they need to cool it down with air to create stone. Note that cooling it down with water will create steam instead, which is not needed in this specific scenario.
  4. Now, all they need to do is combine the mud with the stone to create clay.

All Possible Clay Recipes

Most items in Little Alchemy 2 have multiple possible recipes, and finding all the combinations is half the fun. While the above is the most convenient for starting players, clay overall has seven different possible recipes:

  • Mud and Stone
  • Mud and Sand
  • Stone and Liquid
  • Stone and Mineral
  • Sand and Mineral
  • Liquid and Rock
  • Rock and Mineral

Possible Uses for Clay

The most obvious use for clay is brickmaking. By combining clay with fire, the player can make bricks. Combining two bricks will make a wall, and combining two walls will make a house, opening up an entire trove of building possibilities.

Clay is also a fixture in mythology, with recurring motifs of living beings sculpted by clay. Little Alchemy 2 reflects this in some of its recipes. For example, the player can create a golem by mixing clay with a story or legend. One of the recipes for humans involves mixing clay with the concept of life.

Little Alchemy 2 is available now for Android, iOS, and PC.
