iPad locked, or is it? Or not?

I recently paid off my iPad so that I can removed it from my plan.  Shortly after doing so, I received a message from AT&T inviting me to UNlock the iPad.  So I clicked the link and proceeded as directed only to receive an error message that my iPad did not have an AT&T IMEI.  So I went to an AT&T store.  The manager himself couldn't unlock it through his system so he called for assistance.  The representative on the phone told us that iPads are not locked to begin with an work with any carrier.  So the manager said that I could insert a SIM card from any carrier such as Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, etc.  So I inserted the SIM card from my Sprint iPad but that didn't work.  I even tried to insert the AT&T sim card into my Sprint iPad and that didn't work either.  So neither iPad worked with each other's SIM cards.

So if iPads are not locked, why don't they work with SIM cards from other carriers?

Or was the represenative who told the AT&T store manager lying to him?

Hi @rinati75

Thank you for contacting AT&T through Community Forums! We definitely apologize for the confusion! This is not the type of experience we want our customers to have and we certainly want this to be a smooth process for you.

Are you getting any type of error message when you do insert the Sprint SIM card into the iPad?

The following devices are not locked to the AT&T network:

  • Apple iPads or iPad Minis
  • Kindles
  • Google Nexus 6P
  • BLU phones

In this case, you should be able to insert another carrier SIM card. It is possible that the SIM card from Sprint is not LTE compatible with the AT&T iPad due to Sprint being CDMA.

We can recommend testing out another carrier SIM card such as one through T-Mobile or Verizon.

If you have a myAT&T account, you can verify your device is not eligible (or eligible) before you submit a request to unlock your device. Log in to myAT&T, and then visit Troubleshoot & Resolve to check the unlock eligibility of your device.

You need to be logged in to your myAT&T account to complete these steps.

  1. At the top of the page, select Support > Wireless > Device Help > Troubleshoot & Resolve.
  2. Verify the selected device is the one you want to unlock.
  3. To pick a different device, select Change and select the device that needs the unlock code.
  4. Under Select a Device-Related Issue, choose Unlock Device.
  5. Select Unlock phone or tablet to work with another wireless provider.
  6. Follow the guided steps to verify eligibility.

Let us know if you have any further questions! Thank you for choosing AT&T!

I have an iPad 8th gen. My mother purchased it through AT&T as a gift for me, and is currently still making payments on it. I have no use for the iPad anymore as a graduated.  My mother has agreed to continue to make payments on the device as it was a gift to me. I want to sell my iPad to finish paying off a student loan however, will it cause problems for the future buyer if they try to use a carrier other than AT&T as that is the last thing I would want to happen?
