2024 Toyota Tundra Interior Review

The classy, well-trimmed interior of the 2024 Toyota Tundra balances near-luxury materials with work-truck details, such as oversized vents and large controls. The seats are comfortable, the infotainment system is easy to use, and there’s ample room for rear-seat passengers in CrewMax (cab) models. The same can’t be said for the tight rear confines of the Double Cab, though.

"Though the current Tundra is much better in terms of material quality and design than the previous generation, it fails to bring anything new or revolutionary to the truck segment. There’s a thickset dashboard dotted with prominent air vents and a thick, smooth center section that connects the door panels. Moving up the trim hierarchy brings the usual material and feature upgrades culminating with the top-of-the-line Capstone’s semi-aniline leather upholstery, American Walnut interior trim, acoustically laminated side windows, and heads-up display."

"The interior is built to a very high standard. Gaps are tight, and all the various trim elements lined up precisely. Though our Limited trim test Tundra lacked luxury touches such as wood and chrome you find in other midlevel full-size trucks, the Toyota did not feel the least bit downmarket or utilitarian."

"Shockingly, we've experienced poor build quality in the Tundra. We've noted loose body trim, deep rattles, and A/C vents that refuse to hold in place. Toyota trades on its reputation for durability, but we fear that the Tundra could undo much of the automaker's goodwill."

Cargo

The Tundra is available with three bed lengths: an 8-foot-1-inch long bed, a 6-foot-6-inch standard bed and a 5-foot-6-inch short bed. The Tundra's max payload capacity ranges from 1,485 to 1,940 pounds, which is lower than average for the full-size pickup truck class. Inside, the Tundra has a large center console and a sizable compartment underneath the rear seats.

"The extra space of the CrewMax four-door allows for plenty of storage options in the rear interior for items you'd rather not place in the bed. Rear underseat storage is generous as is small-item storage for front passengers. But the interior storage isn't as well organized in the Tundra as in its domestic counterparts, and we could see the Tundra's various bins becoming a bit messy in a hurry."

Seating

The Tundra seats five in both Double Cab and Crew Cab body styles. Cloth upholstery is standard, while leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front and rear seats and a heated steering wheel are among the available creature comforts.

The front seats are comfortable, supportive and spacious, and while the Crew Cab offers about 42 inches of rear legroom, the Double Cab trims that back to 33.3 inches, making it pretty cramped for adults.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the Tundra’s rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. This LATCH system is easy to use.

"Even with the Tundra's sizable hood, forward visibility is generally good. But the truck's chunky windshield pillars can easily block your view on two-lane roads."

"The Tundra’s passenger cabin isn’t as upmarket in design or materials as those of the F-150 or Ram 1500, but it’s nevertheless well-designed and functional. We find the seats adequately supportive and all the gauges, screens, and controls logically placed."

"The CrewMax rear seat is commodious, and its seat cushion seems deeper than most, providing extra thigh support. Legroom is borderline laughable in the Double Cab; shortening that bottom cushion would certainly add leg clearance."

Interior Features

The Tundra’s standard features include an 8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, a six-speaker stereo (nine speakers for Crew Cabs), Bluetooth, three USB ports, a Wi-Fi hot spot, keyless entry, push-button start and single-zone automatic climate control.

Available features include a 14-inch touch screen, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a 12-speaker stereo, wireless device charging, two 120-volt household-style power outlets, two additional USB ports, ambient lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control and a panoramic sunroof.

The touch-screen infotainment system is responsive and easy to use, and oft-used features can also be adjusted with physical controls large enough to manipulate with gloved hands.

"The SR and SR5 grade Tundras get the standard 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, but a 14-inch screen is available on the SR and is standard on the rest of the lineup. Featuring clear graphics, it dominates the center of the dash and features a useful volume knob but lacks a tuning knob, and the controls on the steering wheel have limited functionality."

"The Tundra's straightforward climate control system is largely set it and forget it, but we appreciate the large buttons and dials even if some of the labeling can be tough to decipher in bright sunlight."
