billed as a John Lennon film is not really true. Michael Crawford the many who played The Phantom in Phantom of the Opera is so different from anything in his later years. How I Won the War is a sataric tale of one mans service in the British Armed Forces. Crawford plays the bumbling protaganist perfectly as John Lennon adds spice to the whole mix of silliness that unfolds with Richard Lester's direction. All in all a funny film How I Won the War is fun vieweing

Many people watch this movie for the same reason as did I: they were Beatles fans and wanted to see Lennon. I was about 13 when I stayed up until about 5am watching this movie on cable, and, for one thing, being exhausted really adds an element to it, but I think that people who are disappointed in it because they were expecting something different are missing the point. I though the movie was a brilliant farce and is one of the greatest British comedies ever. Keep in mind that British comics have very little compuction about what they do. I thought that Lennon's performance was very natural and irreverent, just as it was in A Hard Days' Night and Help! and I certainly wasn't disappointed in it in the least. Crawford was surprisingly thin, but also gave a great performance. The movie is just meant to be a weird, eye-opening experience and one must approach it from that angle. Granted, it isn't for everyone, but all the people whom I've shown the movie loved it and got a copy for themselves. So, if you're a wee-teensy-bit off-kilter and daring when it comes to movies, watch this one several times, because you catch new stuff everytime (mostly due to the actors speaking so fast). It's one of my favorites.

NO SUBTITLES?!? It’s useless!!

I can’t remember if I bought this @ AMAZON or EBAY ...
I’m not sure why I gave this two stars, I guess because I’m such a BEATLE freak it’s cool to see JOHN LENNON in anything!! However, the biggest draw back is there are NO SUBTITLES. I specifically use ENGLISH subtitles especially for a movie with such hard accents, fast pace speech, verbal expressions that an American (and I’ll bet even a Brit) doesn’t know, and on top of everything; lousey audio! If it had good quality subtitles my rating would probably be five stars! “Quality Subtitles” meaning THEY DON’T USE A SCRIPT but actually translate what they’re actually saying, because common sense says that they improvised a lot from the script. If the script is all they can afford to use to create subtitles, I’ll take it! Also, if I’m going to get picky, I would use a subtitle that is a dark yellow out-lined in black. But that’s just me!?!
Without subtitles, it’s rendered almost useless too me. Not to mention our brethren disabled who are deaf or hard of hearing and could enjoy the movie as well.
Bummer! What a disappointment!!

UPDATE: I have to admit after watching it again the language barrier isn’t really that bad. Although there are a lot words, names, places used that are exclusively from the British Isles, and have no idea what they’re saying! THERE IS A SOLUTION ...
Scripts.com has HIWTW. And it appears they stuck closely to the script! YEAH! That’s a big help!

There really isn't anything to review about this DVD/movie. If you don't know anything about this movie, How I Won The War, then you probably won't be reading this review or wanting to find out about the movie.

This is a strange story about an English soldier during the mid 1960's played by John Lennon. You know what that time was like about war. I do like the movie, but it can be difficult to understand the story if you don't know a little bit about the English and their humor. I didn't buy this DVD for the movie itself, but because of my interest in The Beatles.

The Commemorative Photo Album is really nice, even though fairly thin. Hopefully, if you buy this movie you can get the book with it as well. I have seen most of the photos over the years, but it is really nice to see all and have all of them together in one place.

My only dissappointment is the DVD is not a pressed disc. The DVD is actually a DVD-r, a recordable disc, a sort of one off disc rather than being manufactured. That means the company didn't think they would be making a lot of them so instead of manufacturing several thousand of them, shipping them to the stores and having an inventory in stock, they only made a specific amount to order and will not have an inventory to pull from. They will make only what is ordered, one if they need to or 50. It all depends on how many DVD's are ordered by the public.

You might like this movie if you like English humor, if you like an odd comedy about the war in the '60's or if you like John Lennon. Otherwise, you probably won't like the movie if you don't like any that. As I said, this is a strange story not like a regular war story.

By the way, I don't like the packaging at all. The earlier release, I believe from the 1990's, has a much better picture on the packaging. It has a full color picture of John Lennon which is much, much better than a very close up (sipatone) brown and white picture with those lame yellow glasses. Couldn't the creative art department have been more creative than that?

That is it and that is all.

Though it might seem dated now viewing it in 2015 almost 50 years since it's production and release "How I won the war" does have some relevance in todays world, even more so given current world events. This was Richard Lester's anti anti war film satirising both the pomposity of
both the arty farty anti war movies of the time and the big Hollywood john wayne style war movies that glorifies war. It is both surreal in its comedic
moments and brutal in its depiction of the horrors of war (an example of which is the insertion of stock footage of german troops stepping over the bodies of allied troops on a beachhead).It of course features some of britains greatest talent of stage and screen of the time: Michael Crawford, Roy Kinnear (father of Rory Kinnear), Lee Montague, Robert Hardy, Michael Hordern, Jack McGowran and of course not forgetting John Lennon,( who wrote the Beatles classic strawberry fields forever whilst making this film on location in spain). So if you're looking for something a little offbeat but has something to say then look no further than this classic Richard Lester movie........

I had a grainy VHS copy off TV from the 1980's so was glad to have a pristine copy on DVD of this film of John's. The bonus photo book was an added plus as it is contains the only photograph of John composing Strawberry Fields Forever, that I am aware of. The film is a great addition to the Dick Lester films of the Beatles - though John has a little less of a starring role in this film it is well worth getting if you are at all curious as to his acting abilities - He would have made a fine actor had he pursued it!
