Great movie, Glad I found it.

This is a about a child disturbed by the death of her father and who is told that she should not cry about it and also that her father is in the moon, a fantasy created in the mind of the child trying to thereafter trying to reach him there. One reviewer thought it was about autism, which it was not. It seems that autism has become a generalization for anything people don't understand. The mother of the child doesn't accept the conventional methods of psychology and uses her own intelligence to "decode" the puzzle of the child's disturbance and succeeds to help her to come out of her fantasy of her father being on the moon where he went after he died. It is a wonderful portrayal of a mother who won't give up and sets out to look at her daughter's disturbance in a new light, using what could be called modern shamanism to recreate the dilemma where the child can see the futility of her actually being able to get to the moon to see her father. This movie is a must see!

I love, love, love this movie!! This is definitely not what one would consider a usual Tommy Lee Jones or Kathleen Turner movie but it is smart, funny, heartwarming & utterly enjoyable. The story centers around a little girl who stops talking after her father is killed accidentally during an archeological dig in Mexico. Kathleen Turner is the mother & Tommy Lee Jones is the doctor who works with autistic kids & is trying to unravel the mystery of the little girls silence. The scene when the girl "hides" in a tree is worth the whole show as well as the incredible structure Turner's character builds to save her daughter!

About a little girl age 6 named Sally who's father died in a accident in another country-which Sally treats it like her home. Her real home in America where she was born in becomes nothing to her. She doesn't speak, she just squats, flutters her fingers, climbs on things without being scared. She even makes rhythem screaming noises when things are out of place. She is taken to a clinic and said she is diagnosed with autism. But it turned out Sally was never autistic, she was looking for her dad. Sally builds a tower with cards which becomes a superb masterpiece. The mom knows Sally is trying to communicate with her-she builds the tower on a computer and constructs it. In the end Sally and her mother climb the tower, which Sally embraces her mother and starts talking-so it just turns out Sally never had autism, she just never spoke since her dad died and when she had to go back to her real home.

I remember when my mom had brought this movie home from the, video rental store it wasn't the typical run of the mill Tommy Lee Jones and Kathleen Turner movie.I wasn't sure if was going to like it or not but i popped it into the old proverbial video cassette player and it started to play and get going. The two things i did like about it right away was that Kathleen Turner wasn't playing her typical crabby women roles she played a dramatic part of a mother who is frantically trying to understand and help her daughter physically with her autistic and savant type of behavior.Tommy Lee Jones was perfect for this role how was able to divorce himself from the tough guy roles is beyond me but one thing I will tell you for sure is how made the role look so credible as a doctor who along with the girls mother try to make heads or tails out of her special situation, him and Kathleen turners on screen chemistry was something i would call pure cinema.

I remembered first watching this on tv with my family when I was a child and not remembering the name of it, until one day, years later, by luck I found it on Amazon and I was thrilled. It is a great original storyline that will tug on your heart in parts and is beautifully exicuted by the whole cast. It is nice to see Kathleen Turner in a strong and determined role and to have her character in a higher position in the buisness field in this movie. I also enjoyed how they incorperated the state of the art technology at that point in time and it is amazing to see now how far we've come in the world today! Overall it is a great and unique movie to enjoy with family or friends.
The only complaint that I have is that it says it has subtitles but I can't find where to enable them on the dvd, but I would rather have it without the subtitle than not have it at all.

This a beautiful movie about a child that experienced trauma, it is not about autism but ones child's plight in deep pain and not being able to verbally tell about it, the adults view her behaviors as Autism and her mother surching for the answers to bring her back to being her little girl that she was. This is a fiction story but a beautiful one! My big upset that I have seen the movie years ago and was overjoyed to not only find the movie but be able to watch the movie on my own( not having someone interpret the movie for me) independently watch with [CC ] closed caption for the hearing impaired . The description says it has CC, THE BOX SAYS CC. But the movie does not have it! A useless disk to me but someone in my family can enjoy it!

This is an awesome movie. Kathleen Turner provides a riveting performance to bring her daughter back from an internal trapped mind. The psychiatrist, played by Tommy Lee Jones outdoes himself to help the daughter relinquish her life back as well. The daughter (Sally), played by unknown actor-Asha Menina, should be rewarded for such excellent acting where she discovers her father's death and closes herself off to society and tries to cope with it on her own. It's a struggle for all and the outcome is quite rewarding.
