Horace Mann School is a coeducational, college preparatory independent day school for students from Nursery - Grade 12. HM seeks to stretch the imagination, intellect, and perception of its students while developing the moral characteristics that impart identity and purpose. In addition to its campuses in Manhattan and the Bronx, NY, the School also owns the John Dorr Nature Laboratory, an outdoor education facility in Washington, CT. The School enrolls 1,790 students representing 155 ZIP codes, with about 50% of our student body self-identifying as students of color and/or Latinx. For 2023-24, 17% of the students receive Financial Aid. The School is a founding member of the Ivy Preparatory School Athletic League; since 1946, Horace Mann School teams have amassed 214 league championships and 25 state championships.

Life at Dorr

Horace Mann School is one of the few school's in America with its own Outdoor Educational Nature Lab. The John Dorr Nature Laboratory has been a part of HM's legacy since 1965. Students and families utilize Dorr from everything to ecological and environmental studies to outward bound activities to orientation programs to our semi-annual Dorr Family Picnic.

A current HM parent whose child joined 9G, I had big expectations that have been exceeded. I expected the school to nurture our child's intellectual potential, it is the manner in which this has been cultivated that is impressive -- the depth of critical discussions (feels like college-level engagement), feedback for growth, and a deeply personal and caring network of support from student advisers to social and academic issues is intentional, accessible and thoughtful. The school deserves its STEM reputation, not just due to faculty, facilities and rigor, but equally because of the curiosity-driven and creative space teachers bring to the experience. One thing for HM to change is to bring more prominence to more sports that student athletes do well in, from waterpolo to fencing and field hockey etc. Sports and teamwork are also part of the HM equation but are sometimes overlooked.

Review Horace Mann School

I'm currently an 8th grader at HM, and overall the experience has been okay. I've been there for 3 years now. The academics is incredible, and the college prep is as well. Most of the teachers are very friendly, and are willing to spend their free time helping you. However, sports and non-core classes such as music and art have been quite bad. The teachers themselves are decent, but nobody pays attention, and everyone is on their phones all the time. The school has recently put a new phone ban where all students must turn in their phones at the start of the day, but it has not worked at all, and kids use their phones in the bathroom, during lunch, and even when their teachers are not looking. Lastly, the diversity is good, but almost all of the kids there have been at the school since Pre-K, forming a tight community with themselves. Every new kid that I know has told me at least once before that they have felt left out, for seemingly no reason at all. Not a bad school, but overrated.

I was a student at Horace Mann since I was four years and I couldn't imagine being anywhere else. I just graduated this past June and I know that Horace Mann played such a key role in my life. I give so much credit for what they taught me not just educationally, but also socially and emotionally. They have always fostered such a warm and caring environment since the first day I stepped into the Nursery Division and they never failed me. I always felt a balance of love and support while being surrounded by the Horace Mann Community. They are the best and I know they will always be there for me.
