Editor's Take

Nick Spagnoli is a senior editor for U.S. News Best Cars

I found the Honda HR-V to be solid but underwhelming during my time driving the redesigned 2023 model, which is nearly identical to the 2024 HR-V. It rides smoothly, offers agile handling and delivers decent fuel economy. I enjoyed my around-town driving in the top-of-the-line HR-V EX-L, but I was disappointed in the four-cylinder engine, which is loud when pushing the SUV up to highway speeds. Inside, the cabin design is simple yet handsome, fit and finish is excellent, and the features are plentiful and easy to use. Cargo and passenger space are ample for the class. One minor quirk is the position of the gear shift. It sits higher on the center console than it does in most other cars, which I found uncomfortable. On the plus side, there's a handy storage space underneath the drive-mode selector. Engine aside, the HR-V is a respectable subcompact SUV, though I'd test-drive rivals like the Mazda CX-30, Hyundai Kona and Volkswagen Taos before deciding on the Honda.

Is the 2024 Honda HR-V a Good SUV?

Yes, the 2024 HR-V is a good SUV. It offers two rows of welcoming seats, a decent-sized cargo area, user-friendly features and an upscale cabin. From behind the wheel, you'll appreciate its comfortable ride and enthusiastic handling. The biggest factor holding back the HR-V in our subcompact SUV rankings is a weak powertrain that can make the car feel slow and somewhat unpleasant to drive.

Should I Buy the 2024 Honda HR-V?

Underpowered engine aside, the HR-V still makes a lot of sense if you're looking for a utilitarian daily driver or a crossover that can haul a small family and their stuff. With a base price of just over $24,000 and a long list of standard features, it's attractive, and you'll get good bang for your buck. Still, you may want to look to competitors like the Mazda CX-30 and Subaru Crosstrek, which offer punchier engine options than the HR-V's lone power plant.

The engine and transmission are the same across the lineup, and the LX comes with a loaded suite of safety features, including forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist and automatic high-beam headlights. The two 7-inch digital displays give the car a modern feel as well.

2024 Honda HR-V Versus the Competition

Honda HR-V vs. Subaru Crosstrek

The Subaru Crosstrek is fully redesigned for 2024. Both it and the HR-V have roomy cabins, comfortable rides, underpowered base engines and long lists of standard features. The Honda has the edge in handling, indoor materials quality, infotainment usability and cargo room behind the rear seats. On the other hand, the Subaru is available with a stronger engine, and it's better off road, thanks in part to a rugged Wilderness model. Your choice will likely come down to personal preference.

Honda HR-V vs. Toyota Corolla Cross

Like the HR-V, the Toyota Corolla Cross sits in the crowded midpack of our subcompact SUV rankings. This Toyota has one of the largest cargo capacities in the segment, and it bests nearly all rivals in fuel economy, too. Positives it shares with the HR-V include roomy seating space, modern and straightforward tech features and a comfortable ride. On the downside, the Corolla Cross has too many hard plastic cabin materials, its handling is duller than the HR-V's, and — like the Honda — it has a weak and unrefined engine.

HR-V Interior: A Pleasant Place

2024 HR-V Interior Quality

The 2024 Honda HR-V is still feeling fresh from its 2023 model year redesign. The cabin is sleek and modern, with cool design touches and a wealth of high-quality materials. Build quality is excellent as well.

2024 HR-V Infotainment, Bluetooth and Navigation

Both of the HR-V's available infotainment systems — the standard 7-inch touch screen and optional 9-inch display — are easy to get the hang of. The menu structure is logical, and you can customize some aspects for better ease of use. There are also plenty of physical buttons and knobs for common adjustments like climate and volume. Everything is clearly labeled and easy to reach from the driver's seat as well.

  • Standard infotainment features: a 7-inch touch screen, wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a four-speaker stereo, Bluetooth and three USB ports
  • Available infotainment features: a 9-inch touch screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless device charging, a six- or eight-speaker stereo, satellite radio, HD Radio and a Wi-Fi hot spot
  • Additional standard features: a 7-inch digital instrument cluster display, automatic climate control and remote keyless entry

2024 HR-V Cargo Space

This Honda rates well for cargo space among subcompact SUVs. The HR-V provides 24.4 cubic feet of room behind the rear seats, and these seats fold nearly flat to create a boxy area of 55.1 cubic feet. Loading and unloading is easy as well.

How Many People Does the 2024 HR-V Seat?

The HR-V seats five people. The front row is roomy and comfortable, and the driver has good visibility in most directions. Wide doors make for simple access, and the rear seats have enough head- and legroom for adults.

2024 HR-V and Child Car Seats

There are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the HR-V's rear outboard seats. There's also a tether anchor for the rear middle seat, and you can borrow lower anchors from either side when they're not in use. All of the connection points are easy to find and utilize, but the middle tether anchor can be hard to find.

HR-V Performance: Needs More Power

2024 HR-V Engine

The sole engine offering for the 2024 Honda HR-V is a 158-horsepower four-cylinder, and it's mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Acceleration from a stop is fine, and the CVT goes about its business with little drama. However, you really need to mash the gas to get up to higher speeds, which causes the powertrain to drone loudly. Zero to 60 mph takes a leisurely 10 seconds.

2024 HR-V Gas Mileage

The HR-V's fuel economy is about average for a subcompact SUV. With standard front-wheel drive, it gets an EPA-estimated 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. All-wheel-drive models return 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

2024 HR-V Ride and Handling

As expected from a vehicle this size, the HR-V is easy to pilot in tight quarters, and it has deft maneuverability. It's surprisingly sporty through turns, with well-controlled body movements and strong braking performance. A pampering ride rounds out this crossover's solid driving dynamics.

Why You Can Trust Our Reviews

U.S. News & World Report has been ranking the best cars, trucks and SUVs since 2007, and our staff has more than 75 years of combined experience in the auto industry.

This 2024 HR-V review combines 13 professional reviews with concrete data like performance specs, fuel economy estimates and cargo space dimensions and incorporates applicable research for all models in this generation, which launched for 2023. Check out excerpts from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.

  • "Honda's smallest SUV, the HR-V, has been known to pack a ton of utility and clever features into a compact package. And for 2023 it was completely redesigned. It's larger, more refined and more sophisticated-looking inside and out. But the extra-small SUV segment has gained some impressive offerings of late, and we're afraid the new HR-V hasn't evolved enough to compete with the best." -- Edmunds
  • "Basically, it's a safe and sensible choice with few bad habits that nevertheless lacks a defining niche such as being especially outdoorsy, sporty, stylish or family-friendly. Whether that makes it well-rounded or mid-pack is probably in the eye of the beholder." -- Autoblog (2023)
  • "Entry-level cars are tricky. Automakers have to balance keeping the cost low with making a worthy product. Some do a fabulous job while others make you wonder if you’d have been better off walking. While its predecessor fell somewhere in the middle of those two extremes, the redesigned 2023 Honda HR-V is a budget crossover that makes driving the right choice." -- Forbes (2023)
