Rating: R
Genre: Action; Comedy
Cast: Henry Cavill, Eiza Gonzalez, Cary Elwes, Henry Golding
Director: Guy Ritchie

You can always count on director Guy Ritchie to take a story and turn it into a masterpiece, which is just what he did in his latest action-comedy entry, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.

Based on a true story, the film follows the first special forces team formed during WWII as they undergo a covert mission, happily utilizing “ungentlemanly” fighting techniques. Ritchie turns things up a notch with high-octane action sequences, surprising twists and just the right amount of humor.

Even those not interested in action will find themselves engaged in this audacious film.

There, though, they learn just how deep ghost busting goes, when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force that could freeze the entire world over. Only by joining forces with the top ghost hunters does the world have a chance at survival.

Fans of the original will love this installment; new fans will, too!

4. ‘Turtles All the Way Down’ (2024) (NEW!)

Turtles_all_the_way_down_film_poster

Rating: PG-13
Genre: Drama; Romance
Cast: Isabela Merced, Cree Cicchino, Felix Mallard
Director: Hannah Marks

Many of the young adults today can point to author John Green for getting them through some tough times as teenagers, thanks to his raw, relatable and inviting storytelling. And now, thanks to Hannah Marks, that storytelling has been transformed onto the screen, this time telling the story of Aza Holmes in Turtles All the Way Down.

Aza, who on the surface seems like a typical teenager, struggles with obsessive thoughts to the point that often becomes overwhelming. The film beautifully depicts the journey of self-discovery, the importance of realizing that everyone around you is going through something and that a little bit of kindness is never a bad thing.

While the movie targets young adults, everyone will take something away from this film.

5. ‘Monkey Man’ (2024)

Monkey_Man_film.jpg

Rating: R
Genre: Action; Mystery, Thriller
Cast: Dev Patel, Sharlto Copley, Pitobash
Director: Dev Patel

In what’s already being compared to the John Wick franchise, Monkey Man is a soon-to-be classic action film to add to your watch list. After years of getting beat up in an underground fight club for money, Dev Patel as an anonymous young man, Kid, decides enough is enough.

What comes next is an outpouring of rage and revenge onto the city’s “sinister elite”, as Kid finally gives those who ruined his life the punishment they deserve. Inspired by a half monkey, half human god in Hindu legend, Hanuman, Monkey Man embraces the strength and courage to stand up against unjust power.

A stong, engaging action story for Dev Patel’s directorial debut.

6. ‘All of Us Strangers’ (2023)

All of Us Strangers Movie

Rating: R
Genre: Romance; Drama; Fantasy
Cast: Paul Mescal, Andrew Scott, Claire Foy, Jamie Bell
Director: Andrew Haigh

Andrew Haigh’s latest isn’t just a romance movie – it’s a genre-bending exploration of the power love has over all of us. After meeting Harry (Mescal), a mysterious neighbor, on a chance encounter, Adam’s (Scott) life ceases to be the same. As their relationship develops, Adam’s past becomes harder to ignore, until he finds himself back at the scene of his childhood. This fantastical story of love, loss and need will leave you breathless by the end.

Love comes in many forms, as this movie beautifully portrays. And you’ll certainly love watching it.

7. ‘American Fiction’ (2023)

American Fiction Movie Poster

Rating: R
Genre: Drama; Comedy
Cast: Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Rossm John Ortiz,
Erika Alexander
Director: Cord Jefferson

One of the top movies of 2023 (as seen by its many award nominations), American Fiction is a hilarious and poignant film that will not disappoint. The talented Jeffery Wright plays a frustrated, cynical author who is fed up with the media profiting off Black stereotypes and distasteful tropes. To prove his point, he ends up doing that exact thing, pushing him directly into the world of insincerity and inauthenticity he was trying to outsmart in the first place.

Cord Jefferson’s directorial debut is a huge – and hilarious – success.

8. ‘Poor Things’ (2023)

Poor Things Movie Poster

Rating: R
Genre: Comedy; Drama; Sci-fi
Cast: Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo, Christopher Abbott
Director: Yorgos Lanthimos

Oscar-award winning Emma Stone stars in this over-the-top and outrageous story about life, freedom and the wonderful journey that is finding out who you are. Yorgos Lanthimos gives us a new take on the classic Frankenstein that is masterfully done, from the score and costumes to the cinematography and storytelling. And while some viewers have found some of the film’s themes to be, well, disturbing, it may be worth asking ourselves: maybe that’s the point?

A stellar cast completely committed to the bit makes this worth watching, at least once.

9. ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ (2023)

When Sandra’s husband is found dead outside their remote home, investigators rule it a murder, and look straight to Sandra. What follows is a deeper look into the lives and relationship between the couple that will make you realize there is always more than meets the eye. Anatomy of a Fall is as equally beautiful as it is haunting, and it will leave you with chills as if it were you out in the snow.

If you love crime dramas and thrillers, this is the movie for you (it’s giving Gone Girl, but French).

Genre: Romantic Comedy
Cast: Sydney Sweeney, Glen Powell, Alexandra
Shipp, GaTa
Director: Will Gluck

These days there just aren’t as many blockbuster romcoms to look forward to. It goes like this: they meet, there’s a spark. They go out, and that spark quickly goes out. They both end up at a destination wedding in Australia, and the rest is history. Rather, you’ll have to watch this fun and feisty comedy for yourself to see what happens.

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell together are a treat for any romcom lover.

13. ‘The Iron Claw’ (2023)

The Iron Claw movie poster

Rating: R
Genre: Drama; Sports; Biopic
Cast: Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson,
Stanley Simons
Director: Sean Durkin

The Iron Claw is a biopic that won’t soon be forgotten, and for good reason. Depicting the true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, the film follows their historic professional wrestling careers in the early 1980s. Raw, gritty and surprisingly tender, The Iron Claw impressively balances the action in the ring with powerful commentary on family, masculinity and what it takes to make it all the way.

An emotional and gripping tale that will engage anyone – wrestling fan or not.

14. ‘Wonka’ (2023)

Wonka Movie Poster

Keegan-Michael Key

In this new take on an old classic, Timothee Chalamet creates a magical world for both the children in the film and the audience watching. This version follows Dahl’s storyline but with a slightly lighter tone compared to the previous adaptations. With lively songs and extravagant sets, this chocolate factory is a favorite for children and adults alike!

A delicious look into the world of Wonka.

15. ‘Oppenheimer’ (2023)

Oppenheimer_Movie_Poster

Rating: R
Genre: History; Drama
Cast: Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr.,
Matt Damon
Director: Christopher Nolan

The other half of this summer’s iconic Barbenheimer has finally been released to streaming, and it is continuing to make a splash. Oppenheimer tells the complicated history around the Manhattan Project and the man credited with building the atomic bomb. And it certainly tells the story well. Despite the film coming in at exactly three hours long, Christopher Nolan’s storytelling combined with the impeccable audio/visual effects keeps audiences engaged until the very end. Not to mention some incredible performances by the cast.

A new spin on the biopic that is definitely worth the three-hour watch.

Based on a remarkable true story, Hillary Swank stars as Sharon Steves, a determined hairdresser from Kentucky. Showcasing the power of compassion and the extraordinary impact of just one person, this inspiring narrative celebrates the miracles woven into the fabric of everyday life.

You’ll shed a few tears along the way, but it’s worth it.

Past_Lives_film_poster.png

Rating: PG-13

The reviews for Past Lives have been overwhelmingly positive and is being referred to by multiple critics as a top movie you do not want to miss. Celine Song’s debut film takes a story we all know – the feeling of finding your first love, and then losing it – and turns it into something deeper and more profound than we ever thought it could be.

The chemistry between the lead characters brings Song’s masterful storytelling and direction to life in a way that other romance movies often miss.

A common story of love told in a way we’ve never experienced before.

18. ‘Barbie’ (2023)

Barbie Movie Poster

Rating: PG-13
Genre: Comedy
Cast: Margot Robbie, America Ferrera, Ryan Gosling
Director: Greta Gerwig

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie didn’t become the ninth fastest film to make one billion dollars at the box office for no reason. Not only is the film a joy to watch, with its fantastic fashion and pink plastic world, but it also does a fantastic job balancing satiric meta commentary about our world with sweet moments and humor anyone can laugh about. The stellar cast and their insane chemistry make this film a treat for anyone, all the time.

Once you watch, you’ll never want to leave Barbie Land.

19. ‘Bottoms’ (2023) bottoms_film poster

Rating: R
Genre: Comedy; LGBTQIA+
Cast: Rachel Sennott, Ayo Edeberi, Havana Rose Liu, Kaia Gerber
Director: Emma Seligman

This past summer was full of fantastic content created by women, and it looks like this fall will be the same. Bottoms, directed by Emma Seligman, is the hilarious and well-written story of two high school girls who want to lose their virginities to the school cheerleaders.

To do that, they form a fight club to bring the women of the school together. And while the film is about as raunchy and violent as a teen comedy can get, it’s laugh out loud script and fabulous cast make it well worth the watch.

Your stomach will hurt from so much laughing after watching this women-focused queer comedy.

20. ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ (2024)

Bob_Marley_One_Love_Poster

Cast: Kingsley Ben-Adir, Lashana Lynch, James Norton, Tosin Cole
Director: Reinaldo Marcus Green

Bob Marley: One Love tells the inspiring story of Bob Marley and his journey through adversity and hardship that led him to become the musical and cultural icon he is known as today. Over the course of the film, we see how Marley used the trials and tribulations around him to create beautiful, peace-promoting music that the whole world could relate to. While the film doesn’t go as in depth as some would have liked, the music plus Kingsley Ben-Adir’s masterful embodiment of the reggae star make this an enjoyable watch for music lovers and beyond.

A thoughtful and inspiring look into the life of one of reggae’s biggest icons.
