Aza, who on the surface seems like a typical teenager, struggles with obsessive thoughts to the point that often becomes overwhelming. The film beautifully depicts the journey of self-discovery, the importance of realizing that everyone around you is going through something and that a little bit of kindness is never a bad thing.

5. ‘Monkey Man’ (2024)

In what’s already being compared to the John Wick franchise, Monkey Man is a soon-to-be classic action film to add to your watch list. After years of getting beat up in an underground fight club for money, Dev Patel as an anonymous young man, Kid, decides enough is enough.

What comes next is an outpouring of rage and revenge onto the city’s “sinister elite”, as Kid finally gives those who ruined his life the punishment they deserve. Inspired by a half monkey, half human god in Hindu legend, Hanuman, Monkey Man embraces the strength and courage to stand up against unjust power.

6. ‘All of Us Strangers’ (2023)

Andrew Haigh’s latest isn’t just a romance movie – it’s a genre-bending exploration of the power love has over all of us. After meeting Harry (Mescal), a mysterious neighbor, on a chance encounter, Adam’s (Scott) life ceases to be the same. As their relationship develops, Adam’s past becomes harder to ignore, until he finds himself back at the scene of his childhood. This fantastical story of love, loss and need will leave you breathless by the end.

7. ‘American Fiction’ (2023)

One of the top movies of 2023 (as seen by its many award nominations), American Fiction is a hilarious and poignant film that will not disappoint. The talented Jeffery Wright plays a frustrated, cynical author who is fed up with the media profiting off Black stereotypes and distasteful tropes. To prove his point, he ends up doing that exact thing, pushing him directly into the world of insincerity and inauthenticity he was trying to outsmart in the first place.

Oscar-award winning Emma Stone stars in this over-the-top and outrageous story about life, freedom and the wonderful journey that is finding out who you are. Yorgos Lanthimos gives us a new take on the classic Frankenstein that is masterfully done, from the score and costumes to the cinematography and storytelling. And while some viewers have found some of the film’s themes to be, well, disturbing, it may be worth asking ourselves: maybe that’s the point?

A stellar cast completely committed to the bit makes this worth watching, at least once.

What follows is a deeper look into the lives and relationship between the couple that will make you realize there is always more than meets the eye. Anatomy of a Fall is as equally beautiful as it is haunting, and it will leave you with chills as if it were you out in the snow. 

If you love crime dramas and thrillers, this is the movie for you (it’s giving Gone Girl, but French).

These days there just aren’t as many blockbuster romcoms to look forward to. And while that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it is a treat when a feel-good easy love story comes our way, which is exactly what audiences get with Anyone but You. It goes like this: they meet, there’s a spark. They go out, and that spark quickly goes out. They both end up at a destination wedding in Australia, and the rest is history. Rather, you’ll have to watch this fun and feisty comedy for yourself to see what happens.

The Iron Claw is a biopic that won’t soon be forgotten, and for good reason. 19. ‘Bottoms’ (2023)

This past summer was full of fantastic content created by women, and it looks like this fall will be the same. Bottoms, directed by Emma Seligman, is the hilarious and well-written story of two high school girls who want to lose their virginities to the school cheerleaders.

To do that, they form a fight club to bring the women of the school together. And while the film is about as raunchy and violent as a teen comedy can get, it’s laugh out loud script and fabulous cast make it well worth the watch.

Your stomach will hurt from so much laughing after watching this women-focused queer comedy.

Bob Marley: One Love tells the inspiring story of Bob Marley and his journey through adversity and hardship that led him to become the musical and cultural icon he is known as today. Over the course of the film, we see how Marley used the trials and tribulations around him to create beautiful, peace-promoting music that the whole world could relate to.
