Although she writes under the pen name J.K. Rowling, pronounced like rolling, her name when her first Harry Potter book was published was simply Joanne Rowling. Anticipating that the target audience of young boys might not want to read a book written by a woman, her publishers demanded that she use two initials, rather than her full name. As she had no middle name, she chose K as the second initial of her pen name, from her paternal grandmother Kathleen Ada Bulgen Rowling. She calls herself Jo and has said, "No one ever called me 'Joanne' when I was young, unless they were angry." Following her marriage, she has sometimes used the name Joanne Murray when conducting personal business. During the Leveson Inquiry she gave evidence under the name of Joanne Kathleen Rowling. In a 2012 interview, Rowling noted that she no longer cared that people pronounced her name incorrectly.
Rowling was born to Peter James Rowling, a Rolls-Royce aircraft engineer, and Anne Rowling (née Volant), on 31 July 1965 in Yate, Gloucestershire, England, 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Bristol. Her mother Anne was half-French and half-Scottish. Her parents first met on a train departing from King's Cross Station bound for Arbroath in 1964. They married on 14 March 1965. Her mother's maternal grandfather, Dugald Campbell, was born in Lamlash on the Isle of Arran. Her mother's paternal grandfather, Louis Volant, was awarded the Croix de Guerre for exceptional bravery in defending the village of Courcelles-le-Comte during the First World War.
Rowling's sister Dianne was born at their home when Rowling was 23 months old. The family moved to the nearby village Winterbourne when Rowling was four. She attended St Michael's Primary School, a school founded by abolitionist William Wilberforce and education reformer Hannah More. Her headmaster at St Michael's, Alfred Dunn, has been suggested as the inspiration for the Harry Potter headmaster Albus Dumbledore.
As a child, Rowling often wrote fantasy stories, which she would usually then read to her sister. She recalls that: "I can still remember me telling her a story in which she fell down a rabbit hole and was fed strawberries by the rabbit family inside it. Certainly the first story I ever wrote down (when I was five or six) was about a rabbit called Rabbit. He got the measles and was visited by his friends, including a giant bee called Miss Bee." At the age of nine, Rowling moved to Church Cottage in the Gloucestershire village of Tutshill, close to Chepstow, Wales. When she was a young teenager, her great aunt, who Rowling said "taught classics and approved of a thirst for knowledge, even of a questionable kind," gave her a very old copy of Jessica Mitford's autobiography, Hons and Rebels. Mitford became Rowling's heroine, and Rowling subsequently read all of her books.
Rowling has said of her teenage years, in an interview with The New Yorker, "I wasn’t particularly happy. I think it’s a dreadful time of life." She had a difficult homelife; her mother was ill and she had a difficult relationship with her father (she is no longer on speaking terms with him). She attended secondary school at Wyedean School and College, where her mother had worked as a technician in the science department. Rowling said of her adolescence, "Hermione [a bookish, know-it-all Harry Potter character] is loosely based on me. She's a caricature of me when I was eleven, which I'm not particularly proud of." Steve Eddy, who taught Rowling English when she first arrived, remembers her as "not exceptional" but "one of a group of girls who were bright, and quite good at English." Sean Harris, her best friend in the Upper Sixth owned a turquoise Ford Anglia, which she says inspired the one in her books.

I really LOVE putting these Harry Potter short stories into a series of books, all of the information will be better organized. It helps us put all of it into official canon.
BUT , are these the Encyclopedia that been announced years ago, about 10 years ago?

“An Incomplete and Unreliable Guide” is an intriguing title. Are they implying the book will be updated with more information? And why is it unreliable? Who wrote it — Rita Skeeter?

Chapter One: The Journey to Hogwarts
From King’s Cross Station , to Platform Nine and Three-Quarters and The Hogwarts Express , we read of both their history in the Wizarding World and also how they each came to J.K. Rowling's mind!
So many amazing facts; like, did you know The Hogwarts Express was built by 167 Muggles under Memory Charm during a mass operation involving the largest ever Concealment Charm performed in Britain? The wizards can't do a thing to save their lives...
Chapter Two: The Sorting
This one has two parts: The Sorting Hat and Hatstall —where we learn about the Hatstalls of Hogwarts (no, Harry wasn't one, though Neville came very close to being one) and the stubborn Hat and its history!
J.K. Rowling: I wrote a list of the ways in which people can be chosen: eeny meeny miny mo, short straws, chosen by team captains, names out of a hat—names out of a talking hat—putting on a hat—the Sorting Hat.
Chapter Three: The Castle and Grounds
There's the Hufflepuff Common Room which deserves a cheer and more fanfare! Rowling had intended for Harry to visit all of the Houses' common rooms but in the end she couldn't find an excuse for him to go to the Hufflepuffs.
Never fear! The Hufflepuffs now get their deserved attention :) major props to you, all the precious Hufflepuffs!
Chapter Four: Lessons at Hogwarts
Rowling talks about her choices and experience regarding Hogwarts School Subjects and, more importantly, Time-Turner v and the struggle of Hermione's access to one—an interesting behind the scenes to it all, with also a better understanding given on the working of time-turners!
Chapter Five: Castle Residents
I LOVED reading about the Hogwarts Ghosts , the author's inspirations behind them (like Professor Binns who was based on an old professor at her university, who gave every lecture with his eyes closed, rocking backwards and forwards slightly on his toes, completely detached from the students.) or the ghosts that weren't used (like Edmund Grubb: Expired in the doorway of the Dining Hall. Sometimes stops people getting in, out of spite. Fat Victorian ghost. Ate poisonous berries.)
Also there's the nature of Ghosts themselves, The Ballad of Nearly Headless Nick (my MOST FAVOURITE part of the whole book! I wish it had been included in the original series...), Hogwarts Portraits , anndddd my second favourite: Sir Cadogan ! To be honest, I had never been a fan of the old knight painting, now I adore the man! A friend of MERLIN'S! One of the Knight of the Round Table! A part of King Arthur's story! Wow!
Chapter Six: Secrets of the Castle
Sub-chapters we get more on:
• Mirror of Erised
• Pensieve
• The Philosopher’s Stone
• The Sword of Gryffindor
• The Chamber of Secrets
A great ending chapter with fantastic facts and golden quotes! Two of my favourite quotes of this chapter:
“The advice to ‘hold on to your dreams’ is all well and good, but there comes a point when holding on to your dreams becomes unhelpful and even unhealthy. Dumbledore knows that life can pass you by while you are clinging on to a wish that can never be—or ought never to be—fulfilled.”
“This is a clash of values without a solution, because each side has a different concept of what is right.”

To the casual observer who's not a Harry Potter fan, this'll probably be pointless—but it's in truth a visit to the mind of J.K. Several outstanding brains have emerged from Hufflepuff House over the centuries; these fine minds simply happened to be allied to outstanding qualities of patience, a strong work ethic and constancy, all traditional hallmarks of Hufflepuff House.Then there's more on The Marauder’s Map and Jo's experience writing it, and even better, a part on The Great Lake —did you know it had been initially intended for Harry and Ron to crash into the lake in Mr. Weasley’s Ford Anglia, and meet the merpeople there for the first time? I'd have loved that!

Hogwarts is teeming with secrets.
This one was the best one out of the three, with each chapter leading seamlessly to the next touring most of Hogwarts and its' little secrets in one go. Though most of the information presented is stuff that we already came across in the books, I felt that the explanations given were new and original. The beheading of nearly headless Nick and the story behind it was fun to read about, along with the Mirror of Erised and the Sorting Hat.

This focused not so much characters as settings and magical plot devices.
Such as the time-turner! I was most interested in that bit.
But beyond that, I really got into the Hufflepuff Common Room and the train station. :)
Again, these shorts don't have much to do with actual *story-telling*. Just background info. Good for what it is.

I'll be honest and say that this really wasn't worth the money. There was hardly any new information and it was just a regurgitation of things we already know about like the chamber of secrets and the marauders map. I was expecting a bunch of new information about secret rooms and passageways, but the majority of it wasn't even based on Hogwarts as a location - it was all about objects and artefacts that are in the books like the philosopher's stone and the sword of Godric Gryffindor. Such a disappointment. :(

A lovely small guide to Hogwarts, capturing the magic of the Wizarding World and childhood reading - 3.5 stars
Of the Pottermore presents series I think I like this installment best.
The first literary book I vividly remember reading for myself was when I was around 15. It was Specimen Days of Michael Cunningham, I bought it in a sale I went to with my dad (quite rare, since books in Dutch have a fixed price) when a bookstore closed down.
Before that time I was a voracious reader but more of immersive series, besides Harry Potter I loved The Lord of the Rings and the whole Middle-Earth universe, The Dark Tower saga of Stephen King, Jean M. Auel her Earth Children series and Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time.
If I would have read them earlier I am sure I would have loved and torn through the Ender's Game series and the universe of Dune.
Big, sprawling series of books, with whole universes of lores, histories and things to discover.
Hogwarts: An Incomplete and Unreliable Guide recaptures this feeling, reminding me of the excitement of my childhood reading, when you discover a new obscure fact about the worlds created by your favourite authors.
It focuses more on settings than on character backstories, and gives a good insight in the thoughts and iterations J.K. Rowling went through while writing her novels.
And finally I appreciate it makes Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Parts One and Two non-canon by stating the following on Time-Turners:
As our investigations currently stand, the longest period that may be relived without the possibility of serious harm to the traveller or to time itself is around five hours.

The Ministry’s entire stock of Time-Turners was destroyed during a fight in the Department of Mysteries about three years after Hermione Granger was granted permission to use one at Hogwarts

هر چیزی که رنگ و بوی هری پاتری داشته باشه برای من جذابه. این هم که دستنوشته خود رولینگ بود و خیلی هم خوب. بالاخره یه گردش کوتاه بود توی قلعهای که خیلیهامون آرزو داشتیم توش تحصیل کنیم.

اگه دوران نوجوانی یه پاترهد بوده باشید و از طرفی اهل نوشتن هم باشید حتما کتاب نظرتونو جلب میکنه . نویسنده مجموعه جذاب هریپاتر انگار واقعا مثل یه الهه یا آفریدگار، یه دنیای کامل خلق کرده و آنچه ما تو ۷ جلد خوندیم فقط یه برش از این جهانه. این کتاب درکنار چندین کتاب جانبی دیگه که جهانبینی(!) ما رو نسبت به چرایی و چیستی اتفاقات و مکانها و موجودات داستان تکمیل میکنه.
چیزی که بیش از همه توجه منو جلب کرد این بود که انگار با خوندن این کتاب وارد قدح اندیشه شدیم و داریم افکار رولینگ رو موقع خلق جزییات هری پاتر مرور میکنیم. چرا فلان چیز به داستان اضافه شد؟ ایده فلان سوژه از کجا اومد؟ فلان موجود قرار بود چی باشه و چی شد؟ فلان اتفاق ، تو اتود اولیه قرار بوده چجوری رقم بخوره و امثال اینها.
مساله گاهی ازین هم فراتر میره و ما حتی جزییات و تاریخچهای درباره چیزهایی میخونیم که حضور کوتاه و مشخصی تو مجموعه داشتن ولی میفهمیم رولینگ برای همین حضور کوتاه ، یه مخلوق کامل چندبعدی ساخته .
برای تجدید خاطرات هم که شده یه سر بهش بزنید.

Waiting for Hogwarts letter never been that hard...
I liked all curiuos short stories about Howgarst, its secrets and people. A few said that it might be not worth the money - I might agree, since it's very short and you keep wanting more, but the illustrations are beautifl, J.K.Rowling's writting is flowing, there were many things I (a die hard fan) didn't know. A very enjoyable read.

De las tres historias, este ha sido el que más me ha gustado.
Hay poquito que decir sobre ellas, pero me han venido genial para desconectar entre lecturas (sobretodo ahora en época de exámenes) pero no aportan nada nuevo (pero sí que me han parecido muy entretenidas).

This last of the three short story collections focuses on the locations of Hogwarts itself and all the places that entails. Thus, we get the following six chapters:
1) The Journey to Hogwarts (King's Cross Station, Platform 9 3/4, The Hogwarts Express)
2) The Sorting (The Sorting Hat, Hatstall)
3) The Castle and Grounds (Hufflepuff Common Room, Marauder's Map, The Great Lake)
4) Lessons at Hogwarts (School Subjects, Time-Turner)
5) Castle Residents (Hogwarts Ghosts, Ghosts, The Ballad of Nearly Headless Nick, Hogwarts Portraits, Sir Cadogan)
6) Secrets of the Castle (Mirror of Erised, Pensieve, The Philosopher's Stone, The Sword of Gryffindor, The Chamber of Secrets)
So in this we get to know only little on characters but are educated rather about places and objects that are either in or around Hogwarts (or somehow connected) and play a central part in the story.
I know by now that there will be special editions of the first book being published next year because of the story's anniversary - four versions, one for each Hogwarts House. Thus, I'm hoping we'll get even more insight into the single houses, their places and traditions and stuff. In this little ebook we at least get the information about the Hufflepuff common room since that was the only one never visited by Harry in the books.
The story about the Giant Squid in the Great Lake was interesting .
As a Potterhead I'm interested in all sorts of background information on all manner of things of course so although I already knew most of these tidbits from Pottermore, I enjoyed the collection.

It is with profound sadness that I observe the almost tenth anniversary (actual one is July 21st) of the final publication of one of the greatest book series ever written.
Harry Potter (1-7) existed from 1997 to 2007. A decade ago, a series that was both fascinatingly engaging and impossibly perfect, came to a gut wrenching conclusion when the author decided to end all conflict with a great war and an epilogue a fully grown teenager's lifetime later.
The series will be remembered for its faultless narration, the obsession it caused with Potterworld, the most perfectly formed fantasy world (yes, even better than Westeros) and the most endearing characters ever written about in children's literature.
Its fans are known for their insane knowledge about Potterworld. It has made some of the most fascinating content creators out there and has even led to small books such as this one being published. We thank the author and her team of superhuman publishers for teasing us with such morsels of the HP universe. Like the source of Platform Nine and Three Quarters, The Sorting Hat, The Marauders' Map, The Mirror of Erisad- to mention a few. While we know that some spinoffs have cropped up from this series such as

Grandstanding ceremonies will be held to commemorate this great series every time a reader opens up the classic tale.
Every time we watch the movies.
Every time we troll/ stalk/obsess over JK Rowling on Twitter.

I'm really glad I decided to read these three short Pottermore books. A very eye-opening a collection of notes and short stories from JK Rowling about Hogwarts and the Wizarding World. It's so interesting to learn what inspired her.
This book begins with the journey to Hogwarts and goes right up to explaining its hidden secrets like the Chamber of Secrets. I've loved learning more about this world and I hope they bring out some more short books in the future!

Having read these stories now, personally for me, they didn't really add anything valuable or distinctive. Yes, some new information was revealed about the characters and some of the well-known places at Hogwarts, but I didn't feel like I'd be missing out had I never read these.

This has just made me wish even more than I already did that we could actually read Hogwarts: A History. The time-turner section has made me even more confused about the time travelling events in The Cursed Child too.

And… the last one! I didn’t like this one as much as the first two, it was more of a refresher, going into the history and origin of objects and places we’re already familiar with (time-turners, Marauder’s Map, Sorting Hat etc). There were still bits and pieces of new information, enough to make me happy. I want more. :(

Definitely Incomplete!
I have got a complaint – It is too short!
The chronicle hierarchical order to understand the Hogwarts in the best way possible along with conscious sub-conscious thought process of JKR is literally astounding!
Divided into six total chapters this one entangles a lot of basic and hideous information along. It has very few things which might surprise you at some level generally the history of particular being or ceremony or secrets such as the pensieve. The most time it will knock you down with memories and scenes, they will all along play in / with your mind creating a mesmerizing longing to read/visit the Hogwarts again and again.
And so,
We begin just as any witch or wizard on his or her way to Hogwarts would – at London’s King’s Cross. It’s a bustling, cavernous train station filled with busy commuters – so busy that they don’t notice people laden with trunks, owls, cats and robes run at a ticket barrier and disappear.
JKR’s justification to pick up that station is really touchy and overwhelming.
Sorting Hat indeed is one of the cleverest magical objects. We all know the functions of it but be ready to discover more shockers about it!
Indeed, it always has been our second home from childhood – teenage period. The castle and grounds and lake are familiarly unfamiliar bursting with secrets! Each time you get lost there’s something more you find – Fascinating, isn’t it?
The lessons at Hogwarts – totally interesting! I wish I had that book of Monsters. The second chapter added about the Time-Turner reveals the consequences of using it.
‘just as the human mind cannot comprehend time, so it cannot comprehend the damage that will ensue if we presume to tamper with its laws.’
Well, ghosts have been the vital part of Hogwarts, but I was surprised about the portraits – they are two-dimensional with a weird explanation about being capable to talk and move.
Last, but not least the Secrets of the Castle is the most interesting chapter in all. Covering the anecdotes about Mirror of Erised, pensieve, the philosopher’s stone, the sword of Gryffindor and the chamber of secrets, I wished it had more secrets to be revealed!
I just wanted to revive the memories so I used as many gifs I can!
