VANESSA & KJERTSI’S “LEGS” — (Via ET) The actress and singer has debuted her first new music in 15 years — proving she’s absolutely ageless. More than 30 years after her first music release,  Vanessa Williams remains iconic! The 61-year-old actress and singer proves without a doubt that she hasn’t missed a step in her new pop-dance track, “Legs (Keep Dancing)” — poking fun at her age in the lyrics while inciting the envy of decades-younger viewers by flaunting her ageless gams and on-point dance moves in the accompanying music video. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGEs_X5Ngfo)

Kjersti Long

“They say the legs are the last to go / I’mma keep dancing,” Williams croons in the new track, her first original music since 2009. “I’ve got work left to do, and I’m not close to through / Not while I’ve still got these legs!”

The instantly-viral track had social media in a spiral, with fans posting, “Vanessa Williams just dropped a new song and video!!!!!! 61 y’all oh you pop girls are in danger.”

Williams announced “Legs” earlier this month, sharing on Instagram, “Finally my new music is coming out! Been 15 years since the last album but the time is right…

Called my old team up who’ve been creating with me for years. Still here, still standing, still kicking in fact …about to give em Hell again.

“In a press release about the single, Williams noted that the title was inspired by her late co-star, Diahann Carroll, whose 2008 memoir was titled The Legs Are The Last To Go. ‘Diahann played my mother in a movie I produced, The Courage to Love, and has always been a huge inspiration for me,’ she noted. ‘I remember seeing her talking to Oprah about her autobiography.  She spoke so beautifully and confidently about her age and power and the fact that beauty fades but your legs give you strength and are the last to go.'”

Additionally, the longtime performer is taking the reins behind the scenes this time around, with her own recording label, Mellian Music.”What a joy it is to be making new music behind the [mic] again with old friends.”

“There’s a certain comfort in creating new works in the studio while reminiscing about how so many years in this business have brought successes, excitement, and lasting memories. Always moving forward is what drives me. Every challenge is exciting. And more new music to share with my fans is the fuel that lights my fire.”

Williams isn’t just making a comeback in pop music these days. She also recently signed on to play bad b**ch boss Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada’s musical debut on London’s West End. The upcoming rendition features a score by Elton John, lyrics by Shaina Taub, a book by Kate Wetherhead, and direction and choreography by Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell. The show is set to debut in October 2024 — with Williams sharing a sneak peek at a song titled “House of Miranda” on social media last month.

The actress and performer made her Broadway return in 2022, playing a fictitious first lady in POTUS, a comedy from playwright Selina Fillinger. “It is really wonderful to be a part of something that is so innovative,” she told ET at the time of the ensemble production directed by Susan Stroman.

The song “”Legs (Keep Dancing)” was written by Chantry Johnson, Kipper Jones and Kjersti Long.

The 17-year-old wunderkind Long, who has a hit with her current single “Sad Song,” (Origin Entertainment/ModSquad) is prepping an EP called Emotions for release later this year and is in preparation for her musical Relative Space to be presented in the U.K.

There’s also some additional news on “Legs (Keep Dancing)” which we will reveal shortly.

SHORT TAKES — CBS just can’t catch a break. First it was cutting off their debut airing of Billy Joel at MSG short; second was canceling their brilliant So Help Me Todd, and now, they’ve also canceled NCIS: Hawai’i ... Elliot Mintz, John & Yoko’s PR-man for decades is releasing his book, John, Yoko and Me in the fall. Never met him, though I’ve heard both positive and not-positive things about him. One of the best movies of the 80’s was Alan Alda’s The Four Season, with Jack Weston; Carol Burnett; Len Cariou; Rita Moreno; and Tony Roberts. Alda, riding high with the success of MASH, wrote and directed the movie, which depicted three couples on vacation together. Sure, the original was quite some time ago but now the movie is being re-booted with Steve Carrel and Tina Fey in the title roles. I hope there’s a cameo for Alda …  as there should be. Check out the story in Deadline: https://deadline.com/2024/04/steve-carell-joins-tina-fey-in-the-four-seasons-netflix-1235893627/#comment-4048146

Jon Bon Jovi’s Hulu doc premiered Friday (Thank You, Goodnight) and even though Richie Sambora walked out after episode 2 at a private screening, I’m keen to see what was said, and not said. So far, it’s been promoted as being pretty forthcoming; not like the very disappointing Run-DMC doc on Peacock.

Richie Sambora

I’ve watched the first two episodes and there’s no mention of his wife Dorothea, but there were glimpses of Paul Korzilius and Obie O’Brien.  And, in episode 2, Sambora showed up very, very briefly. A revealing interview with him appeared in Deadline and definitely worth a read: https://deadline.com/2024/04/bon-jovi-hulu-thank-you-goodnight-interview-1235893947/

Can it really be 40 years since the Pet Shops Boys’ “West End Girls?” They have a new album out, Nonetheless, produced by James Ford, who has worked with Blur and the Artic Monkeys. Great interview in the Financial Times. Take a look: https://www.ft.com/content/b4e744ce-ca10-4b3b-a2c5-b7995dab089e btw: whatever happened to Bobby Orlando? … Interesting comment from Finneas (Billie Eilish’s brother) in the current Rolling Stone: “I feel like old-school music listening is going to have a comeback, in the same way that cinema did last year with Barbenheimer. Everything’s a counter-movement to the movement,” he says. “I think that’s going to lead back to immersing yourself in an album.” Exactly what we’ve been saying and hoping for, for months … Happy Bday Cindy Adams (94!); David LaRue; and RIP Mike Pinder and Tony Pigg.

LET THE SWIFT-BACKLASH BEGIN — I think what Taylor Swift and her camp have accomplished has been nothing short of sensational. I’m not particularity a huge fan. Swapping music stories of behind-the-scenes escapades and ill-fated romances is not my idea of music. I mean, I can get personal, but I am very definitely not a Swift-ee.

With any success like this naturally comes the internet-trolls. And they can certainly be mean too. Witness these 2 posts:

** She doesn’t work WITH any producers. She sings. Her life has been a complete lie since the beginning. She has no idea what the truth is. I know the woman who wrote her first two albums and trust me. She has never written a single song or lyric herself. They can make her say anything they want and what they want her to say should be of concern or this

** I’ve been a fairly consistent fan in the past but this definitely felt like egg in the face. It was so lacking in creativity and just felt like someone read their high school poetry over mid melodies but expected me to think it was classy because of the marketing. I’m probably late to the party on folks who’ve already called her out for that but we all have our journey I guess 🤷‍♀️ 😂

Nothing succeeds like success. As I’ve said many, many times: Once you hit the top, there’s nowhere to go but down!

ROCK & ROLL HITS AGAIN — (from SHOWBIZ 411) Cher is being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She’s been eligible since 1988. But last year she told an interviewer that she no longer cared –” You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars … I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.” she said. Now. she’s in. That was the way to do it!

So are others who’ve waited too long: Dionne Warwick, the late Big Mama Thornton, the MC5, Temptations songwriter Norman Whitfield (also deceased), John Mayall, 90, the most influential blues musician, is in. So is the late Alexis Korner. Suzanne DePasse, the hardest working woman in the music biz, who has guided Motown for 50 years, will get the Ahmet Ertegun Award. Also, in: Ozzy Osbourne, Dave Matthews Band, Peter Frampton. Foreigner, and the late Jimmy Buffett. In R&B, Kool & the Gang, and Mary J. Blige are in. So is the cutting-edge group A Tribe Called Quest. The Rock Hall ceremony will take place in October, in Cleveland. It will be a long show, but well worth it. The Hall is righting wrongs incurred while Jann Wenner was in charge. It’s like the fall of the Berlin Wall. Congrats to John Sykes for getting this so right!

Lou Reed

Once again: an interesting list. But, honestly, how can The Guess Who still not be in? I watched Patti Smith’s induction speech for Lou Reed, back in 2015 and then watched Laurie Anderson’s acceptance speech, as Lou had already passed. Both inspirational and a must-see. Somehow, the R&R Hall events these days just don’t seem to have the muster of that moment.

SHORT TAKES — Felix Cavaliere and The Rascals at the Patchogue Theater Friday night …

Ringo Starr has a new EP called Crooked Boy and the first single from “February Sky” is an amazingly entertaining track. Written by Linda Perry, it actually sounds like Ringo from his Beatle-days. There’s been a rumor for the past decade that Ringo’s voice has been auto-tuned; on this track his voice sounds more natural and it’s just sensational. More on this EP soon … Jeniffer Lopez has a new movie on Netflix shortly called Atlas with Sterling K. Brown. Take a look at the trailer:

(Via Ultimate Classic Rock) The simply titled Songwriter is a new collection of previously unreleased material from the late Johnny Cash, scheduled for a June 28 release via Mercury Nashville/UMe.  Announced on Tuesday, Songwriter brings together recordings that Cash completed in 1993, a collection of demos he put together while between record contracts. More on that specific era of the late legend’s career, per a news release: In early 1993, the legendary Johnny Cash found himself between contracts in his then nearly 40-year career and recorded an album’s worth of songwriting demos at LSI Studios in Nashville of songs he’d written over many years. LSI at the time was owned by his son-in-law Mike Daniels and daughter Rosey, and he wanted to help the family financially while also record some songs special to him. Not long after the fruitful session, Johnny met producer Rick Rubin, and the recordings were shelved as the two embarked on an important and prolific musical partnership that revitalized the Man in Black’s career that would last the rest of his life … Happy BDay Jill Christiansen and Chuck Darrow.

A TARNISHED TIFFANY — CBS is having a tough month. First, their much-ballyhooed Billy Joel concert -the initial showing- was cut off abruptly while Joel was doing “Piano Man” no less. It was re-run Friday to somewhat meager numbers and, also Friday, CBS canceled their show So Help Me Todd, which was a breath of fresh air in the TV-world. Last year, its debut year, it was a rave and a ratings winner.

CBS has several new shows set for September and the ratings for Todd had fallen dramatically. Now, not that network apparently cares, but there’s been an outpouring of both sympathy and bewilderment for the cancellation and downright hate, if you will. The show starred Marcia Gay Harden and Skylar Austin and was totally unique.

Roger Friedman disparaged the cancellation as well and said it was a perfect Sunday night show – although it would have kept getting pushed back by virtue of CBS-sports.

It was a totally brilliant and innovative show about a mother and a son working together and not always in harmony. An episode Dial M For Margaret (directed by Robin Givens no less) was simply brilliant. To be candid, I think CBS stepped it again – last year it was their canceling East New York with Jimmy Smitsbut stay tuned … sometimes the cancellations are un-canceled and it could just happen with SHMT.

Tiffany no more.

HEART ON — (via Ultimate Classic Rock) Heart kicked off their Royal Flush tour on Saturday at Greenville, South Carolina’s Bon Secours Wellness Arena with support from Cheap trick.

In addition to classics like “Magic Man,” “Straight On” and “Barracuda,” Heart also performed a few of Nancy and Ann Wilson’s respective solo songs, plus covers of Led Zeppelin and David Bowie.

The Royal Flush tour marks Heart’s first extended trek since 2019 and will keep them on the road, primarily in North America, through late September. The rockers will also head to Europe in June and July with Squeeze opening select dates, and they’ll support Def Leppard and Journey on a handful of stadium dates in July and August.

It’s been a turbulent decade for Heart, who haven’t released a studio album since 2016’s Beautiful Broken. Ann and Nancy Wilson put the band on hold that year after Ann’s husband was arrested for allegedly hitting one of Nancy’s children during their 2016 tour.

The sisters mended fences and embarked on the Love Alive tour in 2019, followed by another extended break during which they both released solo albums. However, Nancy Wilson said last June that Heart was working on new material that is “closer to what you would have heard us originally do in the ’70s, late ’70s. So, it’s really fun, it’s just exciting and inspiring.”

Danny Fried

SHORT TAKES — Danny Fried’s Sweet Mary Jane stage-presentation never got off the ground, sadly. What with the proliferation of weed shops and weed culture;it’d would have fit right in …

Johnny Rzeznik

Funny to see Travis Kelce say ‘when her album drops.’ Wonder if he even knew what that meant before he met her … Johnny Rzeznik’s song “Iris” (1998 from the movie City of Angels) has got to be one of the most beautiful songs ever. He teamed up with Daryl Hall for a duet on it for Daryl’s House.Just amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPlg6aSFzg0

Hannah Waddingham

Great Hannah Waddingham profile on Sunday’s Willie Geist gabfest. She’s terrific …

Chris Cuomo

Chris Cuomo back on CNN? With different management now in place there, discussions are indeed being held. He was the station’s #1 air-personality. Sorry Anderson. personally, I loved him … Big news from Rascal Felix Cavaliere later this week … Roger Friedman gave a race to Alicia Key’s Hell’s Kitchen musical: ‘Is a High End Jukebox Musical with Soaring Voices.’ Bravo! … Adios to the New York Post’s TV-man Michael Starr who has been there for 29 years. He used to have a daily column in the paper’s heyday called The Starr Report that was sensational; almost like a mini-Army Archerd. PR-pasha David Salidor got Starr his caricature up on the wall of The Palm on 50th street in NYC near booth 24. He’s done a series of books, including Joey Bishop, William Shatner; Don Rickles;  and his next one is on Rodney Dangerfield. Good man!

COUGAR HEAT — (Via Ultimate Classic Rock) John Mellencamp has a clear message to fans planning to attend his shows: behave or just stay home. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer – known for such timeless tunes as “Hurts So Good” and “Jack & Diane” – recently hit the road for his 2024 Live and in Person tour. In a conversation with The Washington Post, Mellencamp detailed what he expects of his fans.

“I do expect etiquette inside of the theater, the same way you would at a Broadway show,” the rocker explained. “My shows are not really concerts anymore. They’re performances, and there’s a difference between a performance and a concert.”

To that end, Mellencamp demands a certain amount of decorum from his audiences.

“Look, I’m not for everyone anymore,” the singer admitted. “I’m just not. And if you want to come and scream and yell and get drunk, don’t come to my show.”

Mellencamp’s directive on manners comes after a series of notable outbursts. In March 2023, the singer told concertgoers to “keep your f—ing mouth shut,” during an acoustic portion of the show.

Last May, an audience member yelled “play the f—ing music” after Mellencamp offered criticism of the U.S.A.

”If these people don’t shut the f–k up I’m just going to leave, OK?” Mellencamp told the crowd. “Because I’m not used to this crap. Look, guys, if I wanted to play in this type of drunken environment, I’d play outside or I’d play in an arena.”

Then, last month, things reached another cantankerous height. At a show in Toledo, Ohio, Mellencamp became outraged at a heckler in the crowd who told him to “play some music.”

“What do you think I’ve been doing, you c–ksu–er?” the rocker responded. “Here’s the thing, man. You don’t know me. You don’t f—ing know me. Hey Joe, find this guy and let me see him after the show.”

Mellencamp later stormed off the stage, seemingly cutting the performance short. However he eventually returned to play a few more songs.

I am a fan of his music and his art, but I’ve negative stories about him for decades. Tommy Mottola used to manage him, then Randy Hoffman and there’s a long list of people who will NOT work for him. Great music though; from the heart.

Mottola in his memoir said Mellencamp was the type of person who if he won  million dollars, would fume why it wasn’t two-million! I know people like that!

“Human Wheels” is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard.

SHORT TAKES — Mixed reviews for The Outsiders on Broadway which opened last week in NYC. Angelina Jolie is one of the producers. It’s a great book by S.E. Hinton and even though Theatermania panned Coppola’s movie it stills stands as a classic. Check out their review: https://www.theatermania.com/news/review-the-outsiders-becomes-a-soggy-broadway-musical_1736986/Showbiz 411’s Roger Friedman interviewed Woody Allen for The Observer ten years ago. LET IT BE AGAIN — (Via SHOWBIZ 411) I told you yesterday the Beatles are releasing a restored version of “Let it Be,” the film, on Disney Plus. Peter Jackson, who made the “Get Back” series, did the work with his lab of mad scientists. “Let it Be” will begin streaming on May 8th.

Michael Lindsay-Hogg shot all the footage in 1969 and then made the final film. It played in theaters briefly, then disappeared. The rumor always was that Paul McCartney didn’t like the film. But when Jackson released “Get Back,” those reasons didn’t make sense.

Now the general public will see the film. (I saw it back in the day.) It should be exciting.

“Let It Be” contains footage not featured in the “Get Back” docuseries, bringing viewers into the studio and onto Apple Corps’ London rooftop in January 1969 as The Beatles, joined by Billy Preston, write and record their GRAMMY Award®-winning album Let It Be, with its Academy Award®-winning title song, and perform live for the final time as a group.

Michael Lindsay-Hogg

Michael Lindsay-Hogg says, “’How often do you get to see artists of this stature working together to make what they hear in their heads into songs. And then you get to the roof and you see their excitement, camaraderie and sheer joy in playing together again as a group” …“I was knocked out by what Peter was able to do with ‘Get Back,’ using all the footage I’d shot 50 years previously.”

“I’m absolutely thrilled that Michael’s movie, ‘Let It Be,’ has been restored and is finally being re-released after being unavailable for decades,” says Peter Jackson. “Over three parts, we showed Michael and The Beatles filming a groundbreaking new documentary, and ‘Let It Be’ is that documentary – the movie they released in 1970.”…“I now think of it all as one epic story, finally completed after five decades. The two projects support and enhance each other: ‘Let It Be’ is the climax of ‘Get Back,’ while ‘Get Back’ provides a vital missing context for ‘Let It Be.’

As much as I liked the Peter Jackson-version, the original still burns in my head. I well remember when it came out – with a greatphoto book I still have on my shelf. When all the chatter began about how much fun they really had come out; I sort of didn’t believe it. Face it, if the Fab Four didn’t like Hogg’s version back then … it never would have come out.

I think there was a backlash of sorts and that’s why the original is finally coming out again, though Jackson ‘s involvement is curious. The first time in 50 years no less!  If you want to see it unvarnished and how it really was … watch it.

DON IS BACK — (Via Deadline) Don Johnson is set to star opposite Joshua Jackson in Dr. Odyssey, a new ABC drama series from Ryan Murphy, which is targeting a fall launch. It hails from 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television.

As is the case with any Ryan Murphy series, no details about the premise are being revealed. As the title suggests, Dr. Odyssey is believed to be a medical procedural. According to sources, it is set on a cruise ship.

Details about Johnson’s character are being kept under wraps.

Dr. Odyssey is written, and executive produced by Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken. Paris Barclay is directing and executive producing. Eric Paquette, Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson and Nissa Diederich also executive produce alongside Jackson.

Johnson is known for his roles as Det. Sonny Crockett on the classic 1980s NBC series Miami Vice and as the title character in the 1996 CBS series Nash Bridges, which he also reprised in the 2021 Nash Bridges movie for USA. Recent credits include the Emmy-winning HBO limited series Watchmen, Rian Johnson’s Knives Out and the Book Club feature franchise. He has coming up Book Club 2: The Next Chapter and Rebel Ridge.

Tokyo Vice

SHORT TAKES — Watched the second season of MAX’s Tokyo Vice-toplining Ansel Elgort; Ken Watanabe and Rachel Keller. Was a great run, though the ending seemed somewhat somber. Sure the bad-guy was offed, but it was his wife who did the most damage. Great show. Michael Mann is one of the Executive Producers and you can see his hands on everything … Felix Cavaliere and The Rascals at SONY Hall on May 17 …

Participant’s m.o. was to bring content to the world that was socially conscious, read its Oscar Best Picture winners Spotlight from Open Road and Universal’s Green Book, as well as DreamWorks’ Oscar winner Lincoln. All in, Participant counts 135 films, five series, 21 Oscars — including the two Best Pictures, four Best Documentaries and two Best International Features — 18 Primetime Emmys and north of $3.3 billion in global box office

Pam Anderson joins Liam Neeson in a Naked Gun re-boot? Yes indeed …

Ripley

Steve Zaillian’s Ripley on Netflix is a staggeringly spellbinding take on Ripley; the novel by Patricia Highsmith. Not quite the often comedic-romp that was Matt Damon’s take, but rather a very stylish re-construction. Michael Scott as Ripley is pretty awesome and shot in black-and-white, the images are stunning. After the first few episodes that meandered a bit, I’m definitely into it. Very much recommended.
