      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The daemon is in the details and while His Dark Materials' visual splendor and exceptional performances deftly capture the essence of Philip Pullman's seminal novels, it could use a little more magic.

Nick M Dafne Keen's performance is enchanting is ways that transcends reality, as the series does. The ending left me emotional and wanting more. No corners were cut on the CGI. His Dark Materials will make anyone want a Pan as a best friend. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review Istari D Excellent beginning for this serie which follows almost à la lettre the book script. Great acting, nice special effects, mature story telling. I was very positively impressed. This is way better than the movies done so far. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/11/24 Full Review alexandre n I read the book when the film got out. It doesn't deserve so much. There are far more intersting stuff deserving to be put on shows. I stop at the end of the third episode. Even with a good staff it doesn't make it a story I missed. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/30/23 Full Review Ted C I am a huge fan of the books. I was so happy when I heard they were going to finally finish the story on screen. This a fantastic production I love this story so much. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/26/23 Full Review Fred N Warning: it gets worse. I haven't read the books, so can't say how "faithful" (pun intended) this adaptation is. Were they this silly? Characters behave irrationally and cruelly. Soap opera acting and comic book dialog can't turn a few interesting ideas and decent special effects into a good show. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/08/23 Full Review D J Every episode and season of this series gets progressively better and better. Absolutely amazing series. Scott Bryan BBC.com It's really good in its accuracy, plotting and acting - but the first episode has so much set up. Jul 15, 2020 Full Review Boyd Hilton Empire Magazine Pullman's elaborate world of talking spirit animals, arcane gadgets and massive airships is beautifully realised, and half-way through the series, Lin-Manuel Miranda arrives as thrill-seeking adventurer Lee Scorseby, just to ratchet everything up a notch.
