I stayed at this wonderful hotel because I have previously stayed here for projects. this stay was weeks long, so I really found time to enjoy the hotel; the wonderful bar and restaurant, and the really cool wine bar in the basement. The historic decor is wonderful, but what I really enjoy is that they updated the hotel and left historic features such as the original doors, trim, etc.
One morning I was in the shower and when I turned off the water I heard a woman talking in my room, just on the other side of the door. I could not tell what she was saying, but she appeared to be the only person in the room. I was confused; my door was locked. I was just in a towel, so while I could hear her talking I took a deep breath and, with towel wrapped, quickly opened the door. Silence, nothing, no one.
Spent an hour trying to figure that one out. Gave up and had a great day. That night I did the same, routine approach as every night. Take the pillows off the bed, place one in the middle and go to sleep. During the night I was suddenly awakened by someone bumping my bed very hard. It was completely dark so I just laid there in silence, heart bursting out of my chest. Then the covers on the left side suddenly flew back and someone slid into bed along side me. I am now silently screaming. They moved a bit then stopped. In fear I said "Are you comfortable?" Nothing. So I flew out of bed and turned on the light. No one, though I had an extra pillow on the bed, with a depression in the middle of it. I kept the light on the rest of the night and actually asked out loud if that person could show themselves? It was an amazing experience. I am not a follower of the paranormal, but not sure how to explain this one. Was Marilyn back for a visit to her old room? I like to think so. Nice meeting you Marilyn. My visit was back in 2013, but that was not an option in the down drop selection. Also, the staff and management at this hotel are top notch-the finest.

I give the hotel 4.25 stars. I was able to check in early. I stayed in the historic part of the hotel. It was really to see stars on some of the rooms, with the names of famous people (Charlie Chaplin, Bob Hope, etc.).

The rooms are really nice. Comfy bed. A small Huntington Beach coffee maker. A small balcony. Fridge and microwave. The only problem was the shower. Almost no water pressure. I thought I was doing something wrong. I don't know if it's a water saving device. It took a while to get the water out of my hair. The wifi was spotty.

The hotel is really big. I explored and there's a nice fitness center. There is a sauna ( I couldn't get it to get super hot but it was still nice being in it). There is a laundry room ( $2..00 a load). There wasn't anything in the room explaining what the hotel offers. It should brag to the guests about what is here. I don't know if you would know if you don't ask or wander. The only place talking about the services was in the elevator.

The hotel was decorated for Halloween which was really nice. It would be nice if they gave a very small discount to eat at one of the hotel restaurants for guests. I didn't see many people at the restaurants ( I did stay during the week).

We have family in the Central Coast and have stayed in many hotels in the area including the Embassy Suites (SLO & Lompoc), Hampton Inn, Spyglass Inn and the Hilton Garden Inn. Over the past few years, we have made the Santa Maria Inn our home away from home when visiting the area. We like it because of its location and value. There are lots of great restaurants within walking or a less than a 20-minute drive. The rooms are very spacious, clean and comfortable. The grounds are very nice as is the pool. Also, the WiFi if fast and free.

Though we usually book rooms through Hotels.com, when we book the Santa Maria Inn, we book direct as they will usually try to accommodate our specific room requests. The lobby was nicely decorated for Christmas with three different trees and a cozy fireplace. Our early check-in was fast and easy.

We like the corner suites in the tower because they are larger with panoramic window seats. Our room was clean and appeared to have been recently painted with new curtains. The bathroom was sparkling clean, and the toilet seat was a slow close. The refrigerator appeared new as did the flat screen. The king bed was very comfortable, so were the pillows.

OK, the furniture is dated and showed some wear, but the chairs were clean and comfortable. The window screens appeared new, too. Yes, we have stayed in nicer accommodations, but at three to four times the price. At $110 (free parking and no ‘resort’ fees} the Santa Maria Inn is a real value! We will keep it on our ‘go to’ list whenever visiting the Central Coast.

While preserving history in the hotel is great, inside of the room needs to be updated and much cleaner. The wall and carpet had obvious stains. The furniture was really old and I didn’t want to touch it. Found a string of hair in the bed.
There’s a large crack in the sink and the bathtub drainage was extremely slow. I would not let those things go even a day if it is my house. The corners of the bathroom and the room didn’t seem vacuumed completely.
We asked the front to bring a new set of towels two times over the phone, but they never have brought it. My husband picked them up after all.
TV was not properly functioning until we called and found out there’s a specific code needed to enter. Does every room have to go through this process to watch TV there?
Overall, the hotel really does minimum to keep this old building standing without basic maintenance and cleaning, such as polishing old furniture and changing/cleaning carpet.

The most disgusting roommive been been in. Luckily it was just overnight. Horrific smell upon entering and neighboring rooms had dishes and glasses in hallway that never got picked up while I was there. A used Kleenex was found between headboard and wall near bed and counters in bathroom were so dirty I had to clean myself. During a global pandemic one would think cleanliness would be too priority. And this was a more expensive room in the Tower! So disappointed and grossed out.

I had a recent need to spend three nights in a local hotel. My room's bed and bathroom appeared to be clean and in good repair. The room could have used some paint or a cleaning rag on some of the walls and trim. Common hallways appeared to have not been regularly vacuumed since I saw the same few toothpicks, in the same locations, for the three days I was there. Enclosed, carpeted breezeway definitely needed some TLC to their silk plants and containers. There were dropped leaves, dusty plants and cobwebs on the planter. Debris that had blown in through the exterior door and that accumulated on the outside entry mats need to be swept off regularly. I was turned off by black mold in the dispenser area of the ice machine where you set your ice bucket to have it filled. This was on the second floor of the historic section of the hotel. For now I will take the Santa Maria Inn off of my list of recommended places to stay for out-of-town guests or relatives.

Great place to overnight on the long drive between San Francisco and Los Angeles. While the % freeway is slightly faster, the 1010 route (with the last part to SF on 280) is much calmer and pleasanter. I love the historic photos and comfortable rooms and a delightful garden and pool. Don't expect gourmet food anywhere in Santa Maria but the Cantonese restaurant directly across the street is pleasant and certainly inexpensive. The big bar with its fireplace and the fireplace in the lobby are also pleasant for relaxing. The one substantial drawback is that the rooms facing the rear are awakened before 7 am by the city garbage trucks which for some reason they have not arranged to lave arrive later.

I stayed in the original historic Inn section in a room that was slept in by Clark Gable and Carol Lombard. This section of the hotel has so much history as it was used by famous stars as a halfway stop on their way to parties @ Hearst Castle in the early 20th century. Hearst himself had a suite there

There is a newer wing that has been recently updated & the older historic side has been renovated more recently in the main areas. But the old rooms have not. They are a decent size & do have microwave, fridge & coffeemaker. But they are needing repainting etc. And the bathrooms are just old. So if you are fussy, then request the newer building.

The lobby is beautiful and the restaurant has also been updated. I stopped in just for dessert and had a lovely and delicious Creme Brule. Excellent food and courteous staff throughout the hotel. There are also lovely rose gardens & pool area with the best jacuzzi I have ever enjoyed.

It is very reasonably priced and just half hour from the beautiful Coast as well as San Luis Obispo & about an hour from Paso Robles wine country.

The Santa Maria Inn calls itself historic and that is accurate. The older section has some rooms with door plaques showing the names of hoolywood stars who stayed in those rooms (Carol Lombard, Cary Grant, Jack Lemmon, etc).

We have stayed here frequently over the last ten to fifteen years when visiting family in the area. There is a modern section but we actually prefer the older section.

The rooms are fairly large and the beds are comfortable. Prices are reasonable. Staff is friendly. Large parking lot in front on main street in Santa Maria and multiple story parking garage in rear.

Lobby was beautifully decorated for Christmas.

A few things they could do to improve: 1) guess becuase of staffing shortages and less travelers, breakfast is now only served on weekends; 2) towels in rooms are minimal and clearly in need of replacement and 3) surprisingly, for a large facility they have no charging stations for electric vehicles.

I like this place because it's a total oddity. It feels like you're the only people staying there and has a slightly creepy Shiningesque vibe.

It's not fancy or swanky, so if that's what you're looking for, well the price of the rooms should be all you need to understand this isn't that place.

It's unusual, comfortable, low cost, and clean. I've stayed here twice when visiting the sand dunes and will continue to come back.

One word of warning: do not eat at the restaurant! The food is terrible and overpriced and they literally gave us Pepperidge Farms Texas Toast with a $16 appetizer we ordered. Pretty unforgivable.

Anyway, for a unique, quiet, and comfortable place to stay I definitely recommend it.
