Product Description
Directed by Chris Eyre (Smoke Signals); HIDE AWAY follows the story of a successful businessman (Josh Lucas; Sweet Home Alabama; The Firm) attempting to resurrect his life. Entering an idyllic harbor as a broken and haunted man; he buys and boards the dilapidated sailboat Hesperus. Disturbed at night by unsettling dreams of his family; he finds the boat becoming a beacon of hope as he begins his journey back toward redemption. Watching him from the harbor cafA are three equally mysterious residents: a waitress (Ayelet Zurer; Angels & Demons) with a piercingly watchful eye on Hesperus; the veteran mariner (James Cromwell; The Artist); a salty; soulful man unable to reconcile his own past; and a newly single father (Jon Tenney); whose boisterous enthusiasm for his newfound freedom contrasts with the young businessmanas deliberate solitude. As he descends deeper into the refuge of nature; isolation takes hold and he is forced to confront his troubled past.

I understood it's language, shed tears, but I feel cleansed and strangely understood after watching it. Seems a great sense of sadness, empathy, triumph and human kindness rose up in me, sorta gained some Mojo back.
Parts of it I've lived and recommend people to view this; learn acceptance & empathy towards others. Was nice to see a film without someone chained to a cellphone, patiently reading paper instructions to repair parts of The Hesperus and ultimately Himself. It is still possible!
Would have been really touching to see Him stay with The Waitress, love & live, learning from the shared knowledge of the Old Mariner & The Waitress. Finding out there is an actual poem about the boat is cool too.
Touching & Uplifting to me. Peace
And Thank You - going to view it again
The boat was a metaphor for the broken man who bought her. While restoring the boat, he was restoring his soul. He kept his eyes on the horizon (he set his goal), he stayed his course (he fought for his goal of redemption) and steady as she goes. (once he set sail, he never flinched).
A wise old man, when I was young, gave me the same advice. He said,
Keep your eyes on the horizon
Stay your course
Steady as she goes
I've kept that mantra for nigh to 70 years. The only time my footing slips on the deck is when I take my eyes off my horizon.
I felt the ending was very appropriate. He shared the same new beginning as 'his' boat.
This movie is uplifting, and causes one to contemplate one 'self' and what their world means to them.
I'm a sailor and a sailing instructor and there is no sailing in this movie; but there is a great wooden sailboat. Think "fixer-upper" on steroids. All the misery one never expects to enjoy!
Restoring a classic sailboat could be therapeutic for a traumatized man in a mid-life crisis who has suffered a great tragedy. And it seems to have been therapeutic, as portrayed in this movie--except that you get to see nothing of the process and very little of the product. Just think, "OMG!" when you see the trashed out boat and "Nice boat!" when you see the result. And you can think "Pitiable!" about the guy at the start and, "That's nice!" about him at the end.
The movie resembles a "lost and adrift at sea alone" movie except the vessel is tied to a dock. Almost no dialogue, but a lot of implied angst and compassionate body language.
I enjoyed it as a portrayal of uncomfortable life on a boat, sailboat restoration and psychological meditations on aloneness--everything that I want sailing NOT TO BE! I'd never show this to a spouse who is skeptical of one's sailing hobby. Yet... the photography of the sea and seasons and sunset sails are so BEAUTIFUL! that it makes an enthusiast forget that the movie lets the cat out of the bag about the hardships related to boat ownership amd the "live-aboard" lifestyle.
There are a lot of well-made movies about a life lived the way it SHOULD NOT BE. But reality puts many people in exactly these hard situations. Sometimes a good mentor can ease the recovery process. But people need to be open to such "help". Modern movies as a genre are kind of like Woody Allen movies without the humor. Depressing. Yet here and there, and for some people, they can be healing.
If I don't personally enjoy a movie, I at least try to learn from it. I learned from this movie--but I'm lucky enough to not have needed the lessons myself. Yeah; white male American privilege. Yet I share things with others and some of them could possibly need what this movie contained. I do need lessons about empathy and I needed this one.
I don't actually think the characters were realistic; but they might be. I just don't know that many Woody Allen clones. But I do read poets--and they all seem to be just like these characters. The actors themselves seem to have been brilliant. Or else they were stereotyped and wooden. One or the other...
If you ever say--after watching any movie--well, there's two hours I'll never get back! Then don't watch this movie. But if you like being given food for thought, this might be a tasty treat.
