Sarah Ferguson is the Duchess of York, and former daughter-in-law of Queen Elizabeth II. She is also a bestselling memoirist and children’s book author, film producer, and has been a spokeswoman for Weight Watchers and Wedgewood china. I was lucky to be gifted with an autographed copy of Her Heart for a Compass, by Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. Thank you so much Harlequin Australia! I didn’t really know what to expect from this book. It’s historical and I love English historical so there was that to recommend it. I was worried before I started reading that this might be one of those stories written by a celebrity and selling well because of that celebrity status. I was so, so wrong.
This is an extremely well researched and well constructed story, which follows the life of Margaret Montagu Douglas Scott, daughter of the Duke Of Buccleuch, from the age of eighteen too twenty seven. Hers is an intriguing life journey taking in the height of London society with all its expectations and prejudices and new York society with a different yet equally demanding set of societal rules. Margaret is a strong and determined heroine keen to make her place in the world and not frightened to take on a challenge. I admired and respected her drive and her resilience.
Donald Cameron Of Lochiel, twelve years Margaret’s senior, makes an excellent love interest. His appearances on the page showcase his common sense, compassion and willingness to accept Margaret as a person rather than simply the daughter of a peer of the realm. Her Heart for a Compass is compelling story that hooked me at once and kept me enthralled throughout.

I had no table of index, and then found it in the middle of the book. Pages were repeated or not there. I was enjoying the book on my Kindle, but closed it due to frustration, The author, Fergie, showed a good knowledge of the era of this book and also the constraints being of noble blood. Can you please check this out.

I, like many others, didn’t expect this book to be that good. However, I read A LOT of historical fiction, and this is a great story. It was helped that characters in the book were real people, albeit their stories are semi-fictional. I spent quite a bit of time also doing a little research into their real stories as well. I was happy it was a long (500+ pages) and involved to read, so many books of this genre are too short and don’t give you enough.

Writing historical fiction is clearly Sarah’s calling. For a debut novel, this was excellent, and she can only get better from here. It’s a shame she didn’t start writing decades ago because she could easily outpace the top writers of this genre. I am off to read her second novel, and hope there’s a 3rd coming soon!
