I was staying at Relais Henley, the charming boutique hotel in which this restaurant is housed - & so booked for dinner. Food was absolutely fantastic. Expertly cooked, flavoursome dishes, prettily presented. Whilst the food can very definitely be described as fine dining, the vibe of the restaurant is easy going, with fun, friendly service. It was very quiet though, so did rather lack atmosphere. I wasn’t familiar with chef, Dominic Chapman prior to my visit, but a quick look over his bio reveals stints at the likes of The Fat Duck & Hinds Head. The quality of cooking seen here certainly reflects those starry standards.

Having eaten a number of times at the Crown, we were looking forward to this new Dominic Chapman restaurant. However, we were somewhat disappointed. The dining room lacks ambience and feels rather 'cold' and the food just didn't seem as good as expected. From our 6 plates (2 x starters, mains and desserts) we had 2 excellent plates of food, 2 average ones and 2 disappointing plates. Service wasn't quite right. We asked for a glass of wine when the main arrived but it did not arrive until the course was nearly finished. The staff stood behind a screen which meant the women could not see over the top and therefore could not see if guests needed attention. I had to walk up and look around the screen to gain their attention. Overall somewhat underwhelmed by the experience but hopefully these are just early teething problems because the patio area looks lovely should the summer ever arrive.
