Park, Da Cunha Win OAC Titles to Lead Track at Conference Championships

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Capital University track and field program took to the track at Heidelberg University the past two days competing in the 2024 OAC Outdoor Championships. There, the women placed eighth as a team and the men finished ninth. ONU won the women's title, while Mount Union won the men's trophy. 

Highlighting the competition for Capital were the two OAC individual titles won by Zion Park and Maria Da Cunha. Park defended his own men's pole vault crown, while Da Cunha earned her first career first place finish in the OAC by winning the 400 meter hurdles. 

On the women's side, Da Cunha's crown marked the first Capital woman to win an event at the OAC Championships indoor or outdoor since Emily Hilt won the outdoor long jump title in 2019. 
Da Cunha also received All-OAC honors in the 100 meter hurdles by placing third. 

Additionally highlighting the week for Capital was the men's 4x100 meter relay team setting a new school record beating the previous mark set in 2006. 

MEN
Pole Vault: Zion Park claimed his third consecutive OAC Pole Vault title by winning the 2024 outdoor crown with a vault of 4.52 meters. Park had previously won the 2023 Outdoor and 2024 Indoor pole vault titles as well. 

4x100m Relay: The quartet of Daniel Hiser, Dom Glenn, Ben Char and Dylan Dowell ran a new school record time of 41.44 seconds to place fourth overall. The prior school record had stood since 2006. 

Long Jump: Dylan Dowell lept 6.90 meters to place fifth overall in the event. His distance marked him sixth all-time in Capital history in the event. Justin Mathews jumped 6.24 meters, placing 14th. 
Javelin: Jason McColl threw 40.41 meters in his best attempt. 

Discus: Nolan Piper placed 16th with a toss of 39.41 meters. Drew Click was 24th, throwing 37.10 meters. 

110m Hurdles: Kelly Wilson II qualified sixth to the finals in the hurdles, running 15.19 seconds in the prelims. In the finals Wilson did not feature. Kaden Lowe ran 16.40 seconds to place 14th. 
400m Dash: Daniel McCormack placed 10th overall, running a time of 48.75 seconds. The time was good enough to move McCormack up to 2nd all-time in Capital history. 

100m Dash: Dylan Dowell and Dom Glenn finished 10th and 11th respectively running times of 10.89 seconds and 10.92 seconds. Also running were Ishmael Young (11.14s), Daniel Hiser (11.18s), and Chiek Souare (11.21s). 

3,000m Steeplechase: Donovan Slattery placed fourth overall, just missing All-OAC placement. His time of 9:35.48 also narrowly missed his own school record by three tenths of a second. Aiden Mahony ran 11:06.66 in his effort. 

400m Hurdles: Kaden Lowe ran 1:11.63 in his race. 

200m Dash: Six Comets ran the half lap sprint – Dowell (21.99s), McCormack (22.16s), Glenn (22.24s), Ben Char (22.48s), Young (22.50s) and Souare (22.54s). Dowell's time of 21.99 seconds was good to move him into 10th all-time on the program leaderboard. 

4x800m Relay: The quartet of Mikey Arnone, Joseph Countryman, Nick Stuck and Kolin Brake placed seventh overall with a time of 8:12.12. The time was good enough to place the relay fourth overall in Cap history. 

10,000m Run: Zach Glotzbecker placed 19th in a time of 33:29.86. 

Shot Put: Marvin Jean-Denis led Cap in the shot, throwing 14.38 meters to place 10th. Nolan Piper was 21st with a mark of 13.07 meters and Waylon Yeager was 25th with a heave of 12.79 meters. 

4x400m Relay: The team of Dylan Dowell, Kolin Brake, Daniel McCormack, and Dom Glenn ran a time of 3:21.90 to place fifth. The time sets them 8th all-time in Cap history. 

Hammer Throw: Nolan Piper threw a distance of 46.12 meters to place 13th in the event. His mark did move him up to 4th all-time in the event at Capital. 

WOMEN
400m Hurdles: Da Cunha was again in the finals after qualifying third in the 400m hurdles with a prelim time of 1:06.07. In the finals, Da Cunha lowered her time even further to 1:04.51 which won the event by more than half  second. Additionally, her time improves her hold on the second fastest time in program history. Badgett finished her race in 1:14.32, placing 16th in the prelims. 

Pole Vault: Alex Wilkinson cleared the bar at 2.87 meters which sits her eighth all-time in the event in Cap history. 

Discus: Grace Heckenlively threw 33.86 meters and Mia Sanchez tossed 31.26 meters. 

100m Hurdles: Maria Da Cunha qualified for the finals in fifth place after she ran 15.81 seconds in the prelims. The time was good to move her into 7th all-time in the event at Capital. In the finals, Da Cunha a time of 15.27 seconds, earning herself All-OAC honors with a third place finish. The time was also good enough to move her into second all-time at Capital. Brynne Badgett raced in a time of 17.80 seconds in the prelims. 

400m Dash: Allie Mongold ran a time of 1:01.70 to finish 15th. 

100m Dash: Hanna Bauer clocked 13.09 seconds to place 10th. Cece Samuels was 16th in 13.22 seconds. 

200m Dash: Hanna Bauer placed 11th in a time of 26.73 seconds. 

4x100m Relay: The quartet of Cece Samuels, Allie Mongold, Hanna Bauer and Maria Da Cunha ran a time of 51.52 seconds, placing seventh.  

4x400m Relay: The foursome team of Hanna Bauer, Allie Mongold, Maria Da Cunha and Erniesha Guerrier clocked in at 4:09.24 to take sixth place in the event. 

Hammer Throw: Grace Heckenlively placed 29th with a heave of 34.40 meters. 

Shot Put: Deivon McCullough narrowly missed out on the point-scoring position, placing ninth with a toss of 11.51 meters. Mia Sanchez placed 22nd with a mark of 10.45 meters. 

UP NEXT
Capital will look to send a few student-athletes to a couple of different Last Chance meets in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA National Championships later this month. Those meets will be posted to athletics.capital.edu when published.
