Just got this album and one spin (by the way the vinyl pressing is great) and I have to throw my opinion in to the mix- I've followed this wonderful screwup from the early Giant Sand days when there was a now somewhat popular band (Calexico- might have heard of them?) as his band. No doubt they had to break up- too much talent in one spot... And Howe is a little erratic, he's not on automatic and there are some ups and downs and the live shows are all over the place. And he mostly lives in Sweden? with his family I think and only passes through on a trip to see his lovely grandmother in Arizona or something (I'm making this up), but I have to say do not miss this album. This is heart combined with years of deep understanding. It's minimalism with a complex attitude. It's beautiful. Those of you wanting more drive should maybe check out his long catalog. You could start with Chores of Enchantment and then work forward and back...

Did not come with download card as advertised. But Amazon fixed it immediately with a free MP3 download credit. Awesome service. As for the album - still working on it. Nothing from Howe and company is easy to digest immediately. So much music in the spaces that needs to be imagined to be heard.

Giant Sand might just keep getting better as long as Howe keeps cranking out records. I don't know yet where I would rank this album among my Giant Sand favorites, but it is strong contender for a top spot.

Quirky and wonderful! I was a big Giant Sand fan before, but the more I listen to this one the more I like it.

This band is creating innovative, important and poetic material. It is a must in the contemporary library.

This is the 29th release from Howe Gelb as Giant Sand, there are other monikers he goes by as well, plus web only releases. To say he is prolific is an understatement. I will openly admit that Howe's genius is an acquired taste for many. I've rarely heard GS on the various stations I listen to, including ours. Getting in bed with a GS record is usually the best way to hear his poetry spoken half sung, wry, ironic, smart, loving lyrics. Tucson Az is his home, 60 miles north of the Mexican border. This proximity often shows up in his body of work (1,6). Ever since the 2000 departure of Joey Burns & John Convertino (Calexico), Howe has operated with many guests as his bandmates. Many a who's who have played with him on his projects. This disc features Jason Lytle of (Grandaddy(4)), Steve Shelley, Maggie Bjorkund, Paula Jean Brown (ex Go Gos), John Parish and Grant Lee Phillips to name a few...plus the lovely Lonna Beth Kelley, giving a sultry delivery on tracks (10/13). If you are new to GS, fans of Son Volt, Gram Parsons, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins all things Bloodshot etc ad nauseum will find something in this and most GS discs. This record rocks in many spots. (Rocking = 2, 3, 4, 5) (Alt Country 1, 5,6,7,8,9,) ( sultry downtempo/contemplative 10, 11 solo piano no lyrics, 12, 13 ) (Loungish 14). 15 - Forever and Always features Howe's 12 year old daughter who wrote the song. They Sing: Let's do this together, forever and always...and I imagine that is exactly what they will do. Howe doesn't stop. He tours endlessly overseas where American underground artists like himself self out major venues. Get in Bed with GS.
PS- My Fav GS record is Chore Of Enchantment / it's a masterpiece that rates up there with the best of the best records...and would easily make my island list. Cover Magazine is also a great record and I believe it's in our physical library.
Start w/ #4, #2, #3, #7, #13; FCC Clean – Mental Notes

One of the most consistently beautiful alternative country records you'll hear, and possibly the best representation of the many talents of Howe Gelb I've heard. Along with the best of Calexico, John Prine, Chip Taylor, Lee Hazlewood, Gene Clark and Scott Walker, this is destined to be recorgnised as a chamber classic. Imbued with jazz and desert horns, infused by wonderful harmonies and produced immaculately, I will sing the praises of Heartbreak Pass to anyone even remotely interested in quality Americana.

Boring, I wonder what happen to band's "desert rock" music. A few great songs.

Giant Sand get polished
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 14, 2015
One of the most varied in style of Giant Sands output, with a track or two representative of almost every stage of Howe Gelb's career, from grungy distorted rock, electronica, country, lounge jazz, and tex-mex conjunto style. Howe has found the quality control button on this one, with possibly the most consistently excellent collection of songs and tunes of his career. If you're already into Gelb/Giant Sand then this album certainly won't disappoint, and if you're tempted to dip into their catalogue for the first time then this is a good as place to start as any. Review Edited following a month of almost continual listening on my daily commute to work and that fifth star added. As I suspected this like most of Gelb's output is a grower which improves on my initially favourable opinion of this album being up there as one of Gelb/Giant Sand's best.

30 anni in un disco molto ambizioso
Reviewed in Italy on July 15, 2015
