The assumption I'd made was that this would be an album full of covers circa The Beatles Hamburg period, 1961, with maybe 'Love me Do', 'My Bonnie', or 'Please Please Me' thrown in for good measure.
Surprisingly, this is an extremely mature pop/rock album with touches of 'Rubber Soul' / 'Revolver' era Beatles, 'S.F. Sorrow' era Pretty Things, with a pinch of The Kinks/Who/Yardbirds/Small Faces for good measure. It's all really good stuff - the songs are all well written and expertly arranged.
From what I can gather all songs are co-written by Pete Best who also drums (of course). A lot of the lyrics are retrospective in nature and if applied to Pete's unfortunate association with John, Paul and George are very affecting. He's obviously a smart guy who's decided (for the sake of his sanity) to just let it go and enjoy the life he has got.... and no... he isn't a better drummer than Ringo - not even in the same ball park, but his drumming is fine on this. His style is straight forward timekeeping, nothing flashy, some would say unimaginative, but it gets the job done. His brother Roag helps out, for most songs, on a second kit so a direct comparison with Ringo is difficult, though I think it's safe to say that neither Pete nor Ringo are at the top of their drumming form these days anyway.
I find it humourously ironic that this is the best music put out by an ex-Beatle since McCartney's 'Band on the Run' way back in 1974. In fact, if McCartney had released this album in 2008 rather than Best, it would have been seen as a major return to form and then hailed as a classic.
My favourites are 'Step Outside', a minor chord classic, with it's Lennonesque piano riff, 'Strawberry Fields' - ish mellotron fills and chugging backbeat, the haunting title track, and the very Paul sounding 'Red Light' (sounds like an outtake from 'Ram') - but you really can take your pick from any of these songs - they are all really that good!

Surprisingly great British Pop Rock album. Take Badfinger and the Kinks and put them together, and
this is what you end up with. A 2008 release that has to be the most unexpected CD of the year.
To bad no one will hear it.

The Pete Best Band proves their artistic merit on this album, which trust me, is very enjoyable for Beatles fans. Indeed, this is basically in the style of "Rovolver" or "Rubber Soul". Production values are good, polished but not cheap sounding. If there is any problem with this album, it's the short running time of 35 minutes.
