Timeline -- Harry Redknapp's career through the years

Harry Redknapp has announced he is resigning as manager of Queens Park Rangers to undergo an operation on his knee. Redknapp took charge of QPR in Nov. 2012, and, while he was unable to save the club from relegation, he secured promotion from the Championship via the playoffs in his second campaign.

Redknapp's career as a player and manager has been an interesting one to say the least. The following timeline shows the peaks and valleys for the Englishman over the course of the last 50 years since signing his first professional contract for West Ham in 1964.

1964: March -- Signs professional forms for West Ham following apprenticeship.

1965-71: Makes 149 league appearances for the Hammers, scoring five goals.

1972-75: Signs for Bournemouth in August 1972. Makes 101 league appearances.

1976: September -- Signs for Brentford, but makes just one appearance.

1982: September -- Returns to Bournemouth as coach.

1983: Takes over from Don Megson as manager of the Cherries.

1984: Club languish second from bottom in the old Division Three but beat holders Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup.

1987: Guides Bournemouth to Division Three title.

1992: Leaves Bournemouth to return to West Ham as assistant manager to Billy Bonds.

1994: Named as the Hammers' eighth manager in the club's history after Bonds resigns.

2001: Hammers stave off threat of relegation with three weeks of the season remaining but, with the club 14th in the table, Redknapp decides to quit.

June 21 -- Appointed director of football at Portsmouth.

2002: Becomes manager at Fratton Park when Graham Rix is sacked.

2003: April -- Leads Portsmouth to promotion to the Premier League.

May 15 -- Pompey finish 13th in Premier League.

Nov. 24 -- Resigns as Portsmouth manager.

Dec. 8 -- Confirmed as manager of Southampton, Portsmouth's bitterest of rivals.

2005: May 15 -- Southampton lose 2-1 at home to Manchester United and are relegated from the Premier League on the final day of the season.

Dec. 3 -- Redknapp walks out on Saints, claiming he made "a monumental mistake'' in leaving Portsmouth.

Dec. 7 -- Portsmouth confirm Redknapp as their new manager.

2006: May 25 -- Redknapp signs a new three-year deal with the club.

Sept. 19 -- Accused by BBC Panorama programme of attempting to tap up Blackburn player Andy Todd. Redknapp refutes the allegation.

2007: May 13 -- Portsmouth finish seventh in Premier League.

June: Lord Stevens publishes final report into transfer irregularities. Its only criticism of Redknapp was his ownership of a racehorse thought to have been given to him by agent Willie McKay. Redknapp told the inquiry it was possible he did own the horse, but insisted he had not made any money out of it.

Oct. 29 -- Signs a new contract with Portsmouth until 2011.

Nov. 28 -- One of five men arrested by City of London Police investigating corruption in football. The men were held on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and false accounting and were released without charge later the same day.

2008: Jan. 11 -- Meets with Newcastle chairman Chris Mort and is offered the job of manager, but he rejects the offer a day later.

May 17 -- Portsmouth beat Cardiff 1-0 at Wembley to lift the FA Cup.

May 23 -- Redknapp wins his High Court claim that police who raided his home as part of a corruption inquiry were acting unlawfully.

Oct. 26 -- Redknapp reveals he has agreed to become Tottenham manager.

2009: May -- Having taken over with Spurs bottom of Premier League and with just two points from eight games, guides club to eighth-placed finish.

2010: April 11 -- Spurs beaten 2-0 in FA Cup semi-final by Portsmouth.

May 5 -- Secures top-four Premier League finish and place in Champions League qualifying round with 1-0 win at Manchester City.

July 13 -- Signs contract extension to keep him at White Hart Lane until 2013.

Nov. 2 -- Spurs stun Inter Milan 3-1 at White Hart Lane in the outstanding performance of a Champions League campaign that ends in the quarterfinals.

2011: May -- Spurs finish fifth in the Premier League, missing out on the Champions League.

Nov. 3 -- Redknapp misses Tottenham's Europa League trip to Rubin Kazan after a having a heart procedure, and goes on to miss further matches while he recovers.

2012: Feb. 8 -- Redknapp is acquitted on charges of cheating the public revenue. On the same day, Fabio Capello's abrupt departure from England sees Redknapp installed as the favourite to replace him. During weeks of speculation, Tottenham's form dips.

May: England name Roy Hodgson as Capello's successor. Having conceded a 10-point advantage over Arsenal, Tottenham finish the season fourth. Chelsea's victory in the Champions League final costs Tottenham a place in the tournament the following season.

June 12 -- Redknapp rejects speculation he is set to leave Tottenham.

June 14 -- Spurs confirm he is to leave the club.

Nov. 23 -- Redknapp confirms that a deal is all but done to take over from the sacked Mark Hughes at QPR.

Nov. 24 -- Confirmed as QPR's manager on a two-and-a-half-year deal. The club were bottom of the Premier League with just four points from 12 games.

January, 2013: Leads Rangers to a 1-0 win at reigning European champions Chelsea, sparking hope of survival.

April 2013: Relegation to the Championship is confirmed with three games to play. The club went on to finish 20th in the Premier League.

October, 2013: Hits out at members of the relegated squad in a newly released autobiography, 'Always Managing', including Jose Bosingwa, whom he accused of refusing to sit on the bench.

May 2014: Secures immediate promotion back to the top flight via the Championship play-offs, beating Derby 1-0 in the final at Wembley.

October, 2014: Becomes involved in an ugly spat with Adel Taarabt, claiming the midfielder was "three stone overweight''. Taarabt responded by showing his stomach in an interview with the Daily Mail and chairman Tony Fernandes was forced to intervene.

January, 2015: QPR's form continues to slide and a newspaper report suggests Redknapp is one game from the sack before a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United. Redknapp blamed the story on an insider trying to destabilise the club and Fernandes issues a statement, insisting the manager would remain until the end of the season.

Jan. 31 -- Rangers lose 3-1 at Stoke, maintaining their 100 per cent losing record away from home this season and dropping to 19th in the table.

Feb. 2 -- Redknapp expresses disappointment at being unable to sign new players on transfer deadline day, including Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor and West Ham winger Matt Jarvis.

Feb. 3 -- Redknapp resigns after 105 matches in charge, citing knee surgery as a key factor in his decision.
