Manchester City Football Club (nicknamed City, The Citizens, and The Sky Blues), are a professional football club based in Manchester, England. City were founded in 1880 as St. Mark's (West Gorton), before being renamed as Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887, and finally Manchester City in 1894 - and the origins can be traced back to members of St. Mark's Church of England, West Gorton — who founded the football club that would become known as Manchester City, for largely humanitarian purposes. Two church wardens sought to curb local gang violence and alcoholism by instituting new activities for local men, whilst high unemployment plagued East Manchester, specifically Gorton. All men were welcome to join, regardless of religion.

The team's first recorded match occurred on 13 November 1880, and City gained their first honors by winning the Second Division in 1899 — with it came promotion to the highest level in English football, the First Division. In the seasons following the FA Cup triumph of 1904, the club was dogged by allegations of financial irregularities, culminating in the suspension of seventeen players in 1904, including captain Billy Meredith, who subsequently moved across town to Manchester United. Almost half a century later later, a City team inspired by a tactical system known as the Revie Plan reached consecutive FA Cup finals again, in 1955 and 1956; just as in the 1930s, they lost the first one, to Newcastle United, and won the second. The club continued to challenge for honors throughout the 1970s, finishing one point behind the league champions on two occasions and reaching the final of the 1974 League Cup.

Prior to the takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008, the club had enjoyed moderate levels of success through their history. However, since the start of the previous decade, City have been buoyed by the signings of Sergio Agüero, Yaya Touré, David Silva, Vincent Kompany, Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, İlkay Gündoğan, Erling Håland as well as the appointment of Pep Guardiola to emerge as perpetual title contenders, winning the league 7 times in 11 years. City play their homes games at the Etihad Stadium, and their biggest rivals are neighbors and opponents for the game, Manchester United.

Realistically speaking how likely are we to start anybody other than Bruno who hasn't been part of pre season yet?

I’d play a young team for this. Give them experience of city at Wembley.

Keep the senior regulars rested for the PL

Ye you can bet we’ll pick up another couple of injuries with the first team players. But I don’t think we should play the youngsters and let them get humiliated. ETH would get slated if that happened.

will the England and Argentina lads be ready for this?

Given that a lot of players from start 11 just came back the most likely 11 would be

    Onana
    AWB - Magyar - Lindelof - Dalot
    Casemiro - Mctominay
    Amad - Mount - Sancho
    Rashford

Dalot only starts because it would be too big a game for Amas to play already. He is nowhere ready for games like these. Depending on his form then Bruno could also start as a false 9 and then move Rashfore on the left wing

I agree with this but suspect Fernandes will start - probably in place of Sancho as you said.

    Have we signed Kerkez?

Quite sad that we’ve had a full summer window and yet we could still be potentially playing Maguire and Lindelof at the back against city.

How was it a full summer window? Transfer window will still be open for three more weeks after this game. Martinez is still on holiday. Yoro unfortunately got injured. De Ligt may or may not be signed yet. It’s a function of timing that we may play Maguire/Lindelof for this glorified friendly game, but if you feel like a moan, please go ahead.

The transfer window doesn't close until August 30th

Nowhere ready? Thought he looked very ready against a decent Liverpool squad.

We have a week till the game. We will definitely see some additions soon. Don’t forget everyone went on tour directors and all. As to who should be in the lineup wouldn’t be surprised to see licha in there

Let's give all the returnees a run out. They need match time before the PL starts anyways. Worst that can happen is they get injured and if that indeed happens rather it happen now when we can still get some signings in than when the transfer window is closed.

    Onana
    Dalot Maguire Martinez Shaw
    Casemiro(eugh) Mainoo
    Amad Bruno Rashford
    Zirkzee

Garnacho, Sancho, Mount, McT, AWB, Evans/Amass from the bench assuming no signings/sales before the game. Really need to get a midfielder signed. Casemiro is done and we can't go into another season with him as a starter in there.

Most of the summer window before the first game.

if we can get De Ligt, Mazraoui and Ugarte over the line this week they could all be in the squad. What a difference that would look compared to how it might be right now.

    Still, that is wishful thinking

It's kind of funny when you think about. I'll never understand how Lindelof is still at the club. Maguire obviously is a different situation.

But in reality they should have been shown the door by now.

You're quite the optimist. Even if they landed at Carrington by chopper tomorrow morning, it would be 4 days of training with a new group of players. Hardly enough time to make them ready to start and make a difference against City. I'm not expecting too much from this match.

Having stayed up to watch the match last night, I feel like this isn’t going to go well. Not sure if it’s the tiredness or the result but last night has put a downer for me, and I don’t see us winning this.

Will be funny seeing the city fans claiming this as revenge for the cup final however, when it’s nothing more than a preseason friendly.

I’m not confident about this. It’d be lovely to win the first community shield in which we we’ve played since 2016 (the last time we lost the community shield was in 2009, before I even became a United fan and before I even started following football), but still.

Yup. It’s fecking disgusting that those guys are still here and still probable starters.

Eurgh - hard to not feel as though this could get ugly.

I’d be tempted to play Bruno as false 9 with Mount as 10… worth a try.

The De Ligt / Mazraoui transfers have to happen this week - I can’t handle the thought of seeing the chuckle brothers and AWB in defence for this one

It’s funny that we all panic when playing city and think we’ll get slaughtered when in fact it’s probably one of the only games we ever have a game plan for and we can surprise everyone with a win.

As long as Maguire starts we are losing this one.

I realize that the Euros/Copa screwed things up, but it's still a bit ridiculous that a professional club can begin a new season with key players not ready to be available because they're either still on holiday or have just returned to training a few weeks ahead of the season.

Like, this is your JOB, you're being paid an insane amount of money to do it...to hell with your vacation, you need to be here and available for selection for the opening match.

Wow.... I'd hate to be your co-worker.

I dont watch City anymore, even when were playing them. I made an exception for the fa cup final but wont be for junk like the charity shield obviously.

Without using google I can't for the life of me remember who won the last five community Shields and the result of this match will likely be forgotten fairly quick.

Fulham on August 16th is when the important stuff gets up and running and hopefully no further injuries before that match.
