The BBC's pre-apocalyptic crime drama Hard Sun will not be back for a second series.

The broadcaster confirmed news of the axing to The Sun, with a spokesperson saying: "We sometimes have to make difficult decisions to make room for new shows.

"Hard Sun won't be returning for a second series."

Hard Sun was the brainchild of Luther creator Neil Cross.

It starred Jim Sturgess and ex-model Agyness Deyn as two police officers in present-day London who find proof that the world will end in just five short years.

It premiered back in January, with the full series being made available to binge-watch on iPlayer straight away.

The series' final episode ended on a massive cliffhanger, which sadly for fans will now never be resolved.

News of the show's cancellation will surely come as a blow to Cross, who previously revealed he had a five-year plan for the series, which would indeed feature the end of the world.

"One of the reasons we selected this particular 'Hard Sun' event is because I wanted to have a hard out for the show," Cross said in January.

"There is, in this scenario, no deus ex machina. There isn't a miracle that can save us... unless the BBC wants six series!"

Cross also revealed that he knew what the final scene would be.

"I know what the final scene is, because I stole it! It's from a great British film from days of yore," he said.

"It's a cinematic moment that I love... and I'm going to completely steal it."
