- —Tree Gelbman
Happy Death Day 2U is a 2019 American science fiction black comedy slasher film written and directed by Christopher Landon. The film is a sequel to Happy Death Day and was originally set for release on Valentine's Day, 2019,[2] but was rescheduled after a relative of one of the victims of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, which happened exactly one year prior, asked Universal Pictures to reconsider the release date. The film was released on February 13, 2019.[3]
Synopsis
Jessica Rothe leads the returning cast of Happy Death Day 2u, the follow-up to Blumhouse’s (Split, Get Out, The Purge series) surprise 2017 smash hit of riveting, repeating twists and comic turns. This time, our hero Tree Gelbman (Rothe) discovers that dying over and over was surprisingly easier than the dangers that lie ahead.
Jason Blum once again produces and Christopher Landon returns to write and direct this next chapter, while Happy Death Day executive producers Angela Mancuso and John Baldecchi are newly joined by EP Samson Mucke (Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse).[4]
Plot
Ryan Phan (first dimension) awakes in his car and makes his way to his dorm. He attempts to enter his room but interrupts Carter Davis (first dimension) and Tree Gelbman (first dimension) making out. They force Ryan out of the room, so Ryan makes his way to the school's Quantum mechanics lab. While there Dre Morgan (first dimension) and Samar Ghosh (first dimension) inform him their machine had a high energy output September 18th (The day before). The dean arrives and suspends their project due to a lack of results. Distraught, Ryan lies on the couch and sees a photo of himself sitting on the couch. Ryan uses the photos to trace the camera's location and makes his way inside a closet. from there, Ryan is killed by a new Baby-faced killer.
Ryan reawakes in his car and makes his way to his dorm, quickly realizing that the day has repeated. Concerned, Tree explains her loop and the three agree to figure out who the new killer is. Despite their efforts they can't find the killer, so Ryan takes the time to explain the machine they were working on, named the Sisyphus Quantum Cooling Reactor. Ryan explains it was meant to manipulate time, and Tree confirms that it worked and created a time loop.
The trio try to keep Ryan safe at a basketball game, but the game ends abruptly and they have to leave. The killer tracks down Ryan and attempts to kill him again, but he's knocked out by Tree and Carter. They unmask the killer and discover it to be Ryan.
Now in the science lab, the second Ryan explains he tried to close the loop but got trapped in their dimension. The second Ryan states they must kill their Ryan in order to prevent him from making the time loop worse. Annoyed, Ryan states he'll fix the machine by activating it, to the disappointment of the other Ryan. The machine unleashes a blast of energy, knocking everyone back.
Tree awakens in Carter's room and realizes that it's September 18th, again. Despite things looking the same, she realizes that things are not exactly the same: like Lori Spengler (second dimension) and Carter Davis (second dimension) know each other, and Lori didn't make Tree a cupcake. Ryan theorizes Tree is repeating the same day, however, in a parallel dimension. Tree discovers more differences, like how Carter and Danielle Bouseman (second dimension) are dating, and this Danielle is nicer to Tree. Uncomfortable, Tree leaves campus to go have lunch with her dad. There, she discovers another major difference, that being her mother is still alive in this dimension.
Tree makes her way back to campus, and doubts returning to her own dimension.
