Following the events of Frozen, while Else is establishing her queen-ship and Anna is beginning a happy relationship with Kristoff, Hans has returned to the Southern Isles. His brothers have always hated him, but now they have a good reason to. Hans did attempt to overthrow a kingdom, after all… Didn’t he?
Hans doesn’t know why or how, but he does know that he was not in control of himself when he committed those crimes. Now, plagued with relentless nightmares that keep his time in Arendelle fresh on his mind, Hans is convinced he was placed under some kind of enchantment. He doesn’t know who did this to him, why, or even how.
When Hans’ oldest brother, the presiding King of the Southern Isles, takes a trip to Arendelle to calm potential conflict between their kingdoms, Hans is left awaiting a sentence. He has until his brother returns to find a way to clear his name, stop the nightmares, and hopefully ask Anna’s forgiveness.
Otherwise, there will only be twelve princes of the Southern Isles.

Scheming Hans knows that he is not Anna's true love. But when she asks him to thaw her frozen heart, he decides to give her a last moment of kindess to repay her for everything. He kisses her with the intent to let her down slowly, even hold her until she dies. But to his shock- it works.
Now, he must find a way to take out Elsa without Anna knowing while grappling with the idea of a true love he had never believed in. Meanwhile, Anna has growing pains ahead as she gets introduced to the harsh world outside of Arendelle's walls and a pack of brother-in-laws that seem borne out of hell. Elsa struggles to accept her powers and repair a strained relationship with her sister before she's taken away forever, and Kristoff has to face the hard decision of when to give up on the woman he loves when she is about to marry a man who so obviously is up to no good.

"Hans?" Anna asks, now afraid. He gives her an impersonal smile and comes to sit next to her on the chaise lounge. Slowly, he unbuttons his jacket and then his vest. His fingers grasp onto her hand and bring it against his chest where his heart is. He is as cold as ice.
"A frozen heart will only kill you if you let it," he murmurs and caresses the backs of her hands.
Hans doesn't reveal his whole plan, instead opting to breaking the curse in a way he knows it can be broken: by killing the one who cast it. This leaves Anna with a frozen heart just like he has.
