Tamisha Augustin, a Hampton native who played and coached at Bethel High, is Hampton University’s new women’s basketball coach, the school announced Tuesday.

Augustin comes to Hampton from the University of Florida, where she spent the past two years as an assistant coach and associate head coach. Her hire comes after long-time coach David Six, the program’s all-time winningest head coach, retired last week.

“I want to thank President (Darrell K.) Williams and Director of Athletics (Anthony D.) Henderson for their leadership and trust in me to lead this program,” Augustin said in a release. “Returning to my hometown of Hampton to lead these young ladies is a dream come true for me. I am incredibly honored and excited to have this opportunity to contribute to Hampton University Athletics’ rich tradition and mentor the talented student-athletes here. My journey in basketball has been shaped by the values instilled in me by this community, and I am committed to fostering a culture of excellence both on and off the court. Together, we will strive for greatness and build a legacy that honors the spirit of Hampton.”

Augustin has been in the coaching world since 2010 with nearly all of her time spent at the high-major level.

Before Florida, she even logged a stint in the NBA’s G-League, where she was an assistant on the Grand Rapids Gold. Prior to accepting her job in the G-League, she recorded a brief stint on former Old Dominion head coach Nikki McCray-Penson’s staff at Mississippi State.

Augustin was a member of Arizona’s coaching staff from2019-2021 as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. During that time, Arizona made a trip to the NCAA Tournament championship game and also recorded a 24-win season.

In 2021, Augustin was named the 2021 World Exposure Report Assistant Coach of the Year.

“Throughout her career, Tamisha has earned the reputation as an innovative teacher of the game, an exceptional recruiter and evaluator of basketball talent as well as being extraordinary in player development,” Hampton athletic director Anthony Henderson said in a release. “She has an excellent coaching pedigree and has been ultra-successful everywhere she’s been. She brings a passion for the game and, as a former player herself, understands what it takes for our student-athletes to be successful on the court and in life. I couldn’t be more excited for our young ladies to have the opportunity to develop under her leadership.”

Prior to Arizona, Augustin logged one-year stints as an assistant at Cincinnati (2017-2018), Minnesota (2016-2017), VCU (2013-2014) and Marshall (2012-2013). She also spent two years at UCF (2014-2016).

Augustin got her start in the collegiate ranks as an assistant at South Carolina State, where she was with the Bulldogs for two seasons.

Before her coaching days, Augustin was a two-time All-SWAC point guard at Alabama A&M.

She coached at the high school and AAU level in Georgia and also spent time as a coach in the Boo Williams Summer League and at Bethel High.
