Song of the Day: The Stranglers, “Walk On By”


The Stranglers’ surprising take on “Walk On By,” the Hal David and Burt Bacharach composition originally popularized by Dionne Warwick in 1963, probably ruptured their reputation among die-hard punk fans. While the song is more of a nod to The Doors’ “Light My Fire,” it marked their shift towards a more sophisticated style of music that reflected their musicianship, which was much higher than that which defined the early punk scene. At the heart of this version of the song is an amazing keyboard solo by Dave Greenfield, who passed away last year.
